Hi guys, I haven't posted a session report in a while so i thought I would do my latest session and a few highlights from these past months of fishing. The fishing these past few months started off well, with lots of jewies about and a bunch of good size snapper. These 2 past months have been very slow for getting bait during the day and I think i've only caught one herring on a sabiki since.
I rocked up to the local around 8:30pm for a small session. There were 3 blokes fishing, all with frowns on their faces i'm guessing they were not enjoying their fishing trip. They told me there was no bait around and they had begun packing their equipment up. I gave the net about 10 throws before I gave up and waited for the tide to run again- about 15 minutes. By that time the blokes had gone home and I had the jetty to myself, I gave the net a throw and the prawns had completely turned on and I was getting about 2 or 3 per cast. I casted these out on all 3 rods and cracked open a solo. About 20 minutes and a bait change later, a family who I have met previously came to the jetty to see if i had caught any fish or prawns. They were mesmerised by the prawns and were talking to me about if i had caught any fish when I heard the bell on the tip of my rod start ringing, i ran over the to the rod and it started screaming. I picked it up and clicked the bait runner into gear, the fish must have turned around because I thought it might be a small jewfish or a snapper. Th e fish charged the jetty and it was only when I saw it surface that I realised it was massive. As soon as I caught a glimpse of it it took off, peeling probably 30 metres of line from my reel. It started heading for the jetty which I had to quickly put a stop to. After 3 or 4 more smaller runs and a terrifying run in with a pylon and a crab pot rope I pulled it into the safety of the dilly which I promptly lifted up onto the jetty. It was a massive thready, it looked like a new PB

. I quickly snapped a few photos, gave it a measure and a tag and then ran with it my arms down to the rocks at the bottom of the jetty. I was wading waist deep in the river trying to revive it but it had swallowed the hook, lost a few scales and had pretty severe barotrauma so it wasn't looking good for her. I swam her for 10 minutes but after a failed release attempt and an unsuccessful venting job using a tagger I knew it was going to come home for dinner.
It was sad not being able to release it but I knew that they tasted great so I wasn't too sad. I stayed fishing for about an hour longer and managed to pickup a new PB bream of 37cm and a really fat catty.

I was supposed to be home by 1130  but I ended up getting home at 1140 and my parents were not too happy with me going out to the servo to get ice haha. Overall it was a really enjoyable nights fishing and it made some very tasty sashimi the next day.
All the fish were caught on live prawns, the tide was the bottom of the incoming, the moon phase was 60% waning gibbous, the water was reasonably clear

I will leave some highlights of the past few months of fishing at the bottom

Geez I hope not, not that I have to worry at this stage but every other season I had snapps in the freezer.

I'd say they'd have to get you returning to ramp with them in the esky, otherwise like you say, how can it be proven they are caught in the closed season.

The Wife and I put the boat in at Ray Bay at 4pm  on Sunday afternoon .Just a breath of wind  with a slight shimmy on the surface of the bay.
Surprisingly there wasn’t too many boats at the ramp. The snapper closure must  have kept a lot of people at home.
We had all the pots pre baited, and half of them fully assembled  before hitting the water so it only took about 40 minutes and we’d set all  8 pots and were back at the ramp .
Whilst giving the boat and trailer a wash , we heard about a pod of humpbacks out near Harries - pity I would have taken time out to go whale watching.
Anyways ,Went back this morning , launched at Raby Bay again , this time the bay was like a sheet of glass - glorious day !
Pulled the pots in quick time and went home with 20 nice full sandies.
So for the next few days we’ll be feasting out on the back patio on a few ginger beers and sand crab sandwiches …… someone’s got to do it !!!

Been a busy month in July for me with my daughter getting married and my oldest boy home for a month from his place overseas. He loves fishing and we have managed a few trips while he has been here. Last opportunity was Tuesday and thankfully the weather played the game. Put in at Jacobs Well and fished the Broadwater for a decent feed of whiting and a couple of bream. Lots of smaller models. Biggest whiting was 35cm.
I still love getting out for a fish with my boys who are both in their 30s now. Makes the hard yards you put in when they are little worthwhile.

We can't hijack @AUS-BNE-FISHO's post, but this does appear to be the emergence of a serious issue. @ellicat there may need to be a"medicinal/ health and wellbeing" section for the site?

Damo, 18 months is sacrilege!, at least have the decency to take a hand line into a pet shop and work their tanks over, hahaha, I'm with @Bretto77 on this one, an intervention is most likely required

...If only it wasn't snapper closure!
    Hi all,
This report will be about my last two sessions this weekend fishing landbased on the Brisbane River. Both were relatively successful. The first session I hit up a spot I had not been to for a while - it takes a long time to get there so I was pleased to catch a bucket full of herring and biddies quickly at the bait spot. From what I've heard, bait has been quite slow in the river recently, so I was pleased to get a few.
Once I arrived at the fishing spot and set up, I got some more biddies and herring. With plenty of bait to start fishing, I deployed my baits and began the waiting game. Apart from a rather large buck sandy that dropped off before I could land it, the bite was quiet, and it stayed that way until just before high tide. I had a dead prawn out (I bring a couple each session for deadbaits/starter bait while I catch livies) and it screamed off into the distance. I was pretty certain it was a ray based on the nibbles, and a fun fight around some structure with some fast runs and tight drag ensued. Sure enough, I got a look at it and it was a rather large shovelly. Then, the best outcome occurred. The fish took one more run and the hook pulled (the spot I was fishing is about five meters above the water and the shovel would've been too big for the dilly).
Shortly after on a live herring, I hooked up to a fish. A few headshakes later and some unwanted bycatch surfaced, a decent snapper around 45CM. It was gut hooked so I cut the line and sent him on his way.

    Snap
About five minutes later, I had another hookup on live herring, which resulted in me dropping something alright just as I was about to see it. If I had to guess, I'd say flatty, but we'll never know for sure. There was a large concert going on nearby and my Dad was at his work, also nearby, so he offered to pick me up. I finished a little past one happy enough with the day.
    Stats of Trip: HN
Tide: 7:00AM, .7M, Low, 12:30PM, 1.9M, High (high tide was prime bite time)
Moon Phase: 17%, and there wasn't lots of tide
    Humidity: 66%
    Air Pressure: 1012
Tackle Used: Shimano Sedona 6000 on Abu Garcia Nexus, Shimano Baitrunner DC on Kmart rod, Okuma Coronado CDX on Silstar Crystal Powertip. 30 pound braid mainlines, 50 pound trace, size 4 star sinker, barrel swivels, 6/o circle hook.
Bait Used and Caught: Live herring, silver biddy, prawns
Fish Caught: Squire x 1, shovelnose x 1. Potential flatty hookup.
Overall Success Rate: 40% - quiet day
The next session was this morning, and was at a brand new spot I'd never fished before. I was pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to get bait there easily though, and I was right, so it was very lucky my Dad agreed to drive me to a spot that always produces livies (about five minutes away from the fishing spot). The first cast I did, I got a nice school of about 15 herrings, which all went in the bucket. I saw some mullet action in some shallower water a few metres away, and got about 15 mullet in that cast. In amongst them were some silver biddies and ponyfish as well. Nice, that's bait sorted.
I was at the spot with lines in the water by 6:30AM. The tide was gushing out, and it was actually looking a little quiet. Luckily, I persisted and by 7:30AM one of my lines with a live herring bait was attacked. Line was peeling off my spool, so I set the hook and started the fight. It felt snappery, and a couple of fast runs and very solid headshakes later I had a 57CM beauty on the riverwalk. If only it wasn't close season!

    New PB
Feeling pretty happy about myself, I sent some more livies out. My bait bucket was a bit overpopulated though, and a couple of herring were dying. After a while, I sent out a dead herring fingered up around the tail, so it swayed in the current. Michael and Andrew arrived, and shortly after this, that dead herring was belted by another fish. Straight away, it felt a lot like a snapper, and after a fun fight with some decent runs and an good dilly job by Andrew, we had a nice 54CM model up on the jetty... If only it wasn't close season!

    Another
After that, we all sent out some baits, and were hopeful a jew or threadfin would move through. Mick and Steve also arrived, but it was a very quiet day, because for the duration of the rising tide no one got anything, except Steve, who caught a small pike eel. Based on that session, I'll be back for a couple more tries at the spot. Next weekend I may try another new spot or go fishing with some mates, but hopefully some fish other than snapper turn up. One negative was that both the snapper were gut hooked, I probably would've kept them normally as I don't like releasing fish with a large circle hook down it's mouth.
    Stats of Trip: BS
    Tide: 7:30AM, .7M, Low, 1:15PM, 1.9M, High
Moon Phase: 25%, there was a decent amount of tide
Bait Caught and Used: Live herring, mullet, silver biddies. Dead prawn.
    Humidity: 69%
    Air Pressure: 1013
    Fish Caught: Snapper x 2
Tackle Used: Shimano Sedona 6000 on Abu Garcia Nexus, Shimano Baitrunner DC on Kmart rod, Okuma Coronado CDX on Silstar Crystal Powertip. 30 pound braid mainlines, 50 pound trace, size 4 star sinker, barrel swivels, 6/o circle hook.
Overall Success Rate: 80% - not too often you get 50CM plus river snapper
    Thanks for reading,
    Cheers Hamish
