I've always thought that fragile reef areas, need to be shut like this for about 10 months per year to preserve stocks, otherwise there will be nothing left soon, and its getting very close to it now..

Especially along the Southern Great Barrier Reef from about Mackay to Bundy which has been absolutely flogged to death for the last 40 yrs. Like open it only for a month in Dec and then again in Jun. And Same for those extremely rare Spanish Mackerel which are on the verge of extinction in Qld waters.

For both commercial and Rec though.

They already have seasonal reef fish closures on the GBR. Plus 33% green zones with no fishing at any time. Stocks of reef fish are described as very robust and appear to be increasing in numbers.

This would be right in the slot limit - So am i reading this extract right that the science doesn't quite back up the slot limits? With older / larger Female Flatties not really in the spawning aggregation?

Remember the bag limit has been halved as well.

    Good on NSW.

I'm not sure on size and bags effectiveness either.

It saved them from extinction, that's for sure but I would have thought for a fish so easy to catch that their numbers would still be dropping, even with the current size and bag quotas.

    I hope I am wrong.

No saltwater fish has ever been fished to extinction. Also we have the 30 rec havens in our favour.

What brand jump starters - I reckon i'm not the best at keeping another battery charged plus what is the lifespan on these lithium jump starters? Would it be more cost effective to just replace boat batteries premptively.

Lots of cheap ones but Murphy's law will have it that when i need the jump starter that will be flat too.

If I go cheap I'm worried it won't work when i need it.

If i go expensive, I'm thinking it may be cheaper to replace the boat batteries proactively

I have a NOCO GB40 Genius Boost +. It holds it's charge for quite a few months. It saved a fishing trip not long after I got it. A hard to start motor on a cold morning quickly drained my boat's batteries. Batteries can lose 50% of their charge in low temperatures.

The free trade deal with China was a big killer too.

Now our market gets flooded with cheap crap that our local manufacturers can't come close to competing with, that then kills off our manufacturing and worse still we loose the skills base needed to start it back up.

If covid taught us anything it's that we need to be more self reliant not more reliant on foreign made goods.

Tariffs were progressively removed from the time Whitlam made the first significant cut - for better or worse.

  6. I would take the prop off, check for fishing line and re-grease.

If the bearings look OK I would just repack them.

The hydraulic steering probably won't need bleeding unless there are signs of problems such as air in the system. Someone put up a link in another thread how to service them. This mainly involves cleaning and re-greasing the support rod on the top.

I would check the build date of your tyres and replace them if it is older than 5 years, especially if it is a single axle trailer near the weight limit.

PS: is there something wrong with the trim and tilt for you want to be replacing the seals?

Ally boats will crack, well the ones that get used do anyway. It's a given, just as fibreglass boats rot internally. Most cracks are easy to repair.

Well, cracks can compromise the boats flotation given that most alloy boats rely on sealed compartments rather than positive flotation. Also a lot of fiberglass boats today use composites rather than wood.

I just used that one as an example just to show that a larger one would not cost as much as DanO was saying. Still it depends on how it's made too, as to whether or not he might need a larger size. Most of these on Ebay are really built to a price and he would need to take into consideration the weight rating it is made for as well, but just a replacement frame on it's own shouldn't cost him more than $1k  to build/replace.

I got my Sales trailer in 1999 for my 5.4m boat and it's still going strong. I did replace the axles, springs and discs once. It is one of the cheaper brands. I'd guess it would be a bit over 3K for an equivalent one now.

  9. You can move the winch post forward if there is room. A bit of overhang is OK but not that much. 8 to 10 K seems high for a 5M trailer (that's about what my whole rig is worth which is a 5.4M boat). If you are in Sydney have a look at Sales Trailers which are reasonably priced.

    Hi All.

    Please google

Spanish Mackeral Fishery Working Group Communiquae 17-18 MAy

In short a team has been assembled to study Mackeral numbers. This, as I have seen off NSW coasts previously has lead to closures and lockouts.

Snapper, Pearl perch have been limikted (I think with some warrant during breeds) Black Jew No Take.(dunno where I stand on this)

But Spanish Mackeral? This will be next on the chop I feel. Bag limits have already been reduced to 6 per Boat (Fair enough). But honestly there are shitloads of them.

Spanish Mac are a fast growing species with a life cycle of 8-10 yrs, Prolific Breeders, and hence a sustainable species. We already have massive Green zones along the GBR, Pretty much North of Cooktown No Population, hence 100's of miles of more or less unfished area. Then the Mackeral have 1000's of miles from the Tip QLD to Broome and beyond to proliferate. The Migratory Fish that travel the East Coast are a staple fish for the Average Rec Fisho. Commercial fisheries also rely on Mackeral.

If you want to ban an unsustainable fishery and make a difference... Choose Orange Roughy

I urge you to read the report, Easy enough to find.

My mate who owns a Wholesale fish shop that deals in alot of Mac is very worried about this. He basically said when I sent him a photo of my last catch "you better frame that because it may be your last soon enough"

The report dosnt mention Closures (YET)  But when these teams of scientists assemble there is always a political and self motivated Agenda to push. Watch this space. Mackeral along East coast will be No take or very seasonal if these mobs get there way. It will all be somehow wrapped up with the Palaschook Govt and the Green Vote.

See what you think and read btw the lines. Remember there is usually no public consult. Just changes shoved thru and your right to fish and feed your family removed. They tried this off sydney and the

'STOP THE LOCKOUT"  facebook team/movement quashed this. Worth checking them out. They have been advised and are already on board with watching and following this intently. They are still trying to overturn green zones locking familes out of fishing areas all along the NSW coast. A grubby Obeid Govt got this thru by buying green votes with this. Disgusting. That prick can rot.

Remember, if we do nothing and a closure gets in, it is near impossible to repeal. I encourage you to write and share this with your local members, Fishing celebrity's etc. Get ahead of it. 10 mins to email, or a lifetime of whinging when your right to Fish for Mackeral is taken away

    https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/business-priorities/fisheries/sustainable/fishery-working-groups/spanish-mackerel-fishery-working-group/communiques/17-18-may-2021

    Good Luck.

Very few fish have seasonal closures in NSW. Bass and estuary perch are the only ones I can think of. As to green zones or marine parks they have never been the result of stock assessments like this. They have never even originated from any of our fisheries departments. Ie it doesn't seem that this assessment has anything to do with some green agenda or push for marine parks.

An American virologist came out last March and named the lab in the US where the covid virus was developed and said the virus was then transported to the Wuhan lab which is jointly funded by the US. She also named three American virologists that were part of the team that developed it. She has not been sued by either the lab or the three virologists. This might explain why both the US and China refused to support Australia's request for an inquiry into the origins of the virus. That report has just been completed and the investigators reported they received no support rom any authorities but concluded the virus was a release from the Wuhan lab and not a natural occurrence.

China's government has to deal with two billion people, most major Chinese cities have more people than the whole of Australia. Compared to Australia China has limited natural resources which is why they need to be economically viable with manufacturing. If you look at China's history their government is doing an amazing job, their development in the last 50 years makes every other country's economy look sick. Did you know that everyone in China, man or woman, receives an aged pension at 60 years old? In Australia it will soon be 70 and a great many people still wont qualify then.

There is no perfect government system, the system in the US is probably the worst. Politicians spend all their time soliciting bribes under the banner of "political donations", this leads to political decisions not in the best interests of the people. Look up the cost of a covid test in the US and you will see what their system has denigrated into. Australia's system is better but is still controlled by big business which is why most of the big companies pay no tax and why we blindly follow the US in invasions of other countries.

Al the evidence points to a natural origin for Covid (jumping from another species). Also the income per person in China is many times below that of the US:

"Due to vast population of China, more than 4 times of US's population, difference between these two country is very high in terms of per capita income. Per capita income of United States is 6.38 and 3.32 times greater than of China in nominal and PPP terms, respectively. US is the 8th richest country of the world whereas China comes at 72th rank. On PPP basis, United states is at 12th position and China is at 75th".

How did you possibly get that from my comment?

The reason China placed trade restrictions on some Australian products is because Australia chose to back the US in their dispute with China over sovereignty of the South China Sea. It's a dispute that has nothing to do with the US and nothing to do with us, it's all about control of the massive oil reserves there. The US is only attacking China over their stance there because it interferes with the aspirations of the multi national oil companies who want it for themselves. The American people have nothing to gain from the exercise, it is only the mega rich that would gain. It is the same scenario as in the Middle East, the American invasions cost the American taxpayers over seven trillion dollars and thousands of lives and they never received one cent of the trillions now being made from the oil companies that have claimed the oil. All they receive from the oil companies is rising fuel costs.

The Chinese people want to buy our products, they consider them the best in the world. If our government was not controlled in their decisions on foreign affairs just like the US we would have a great economic relationship with China. I will continue to buy Chinese products and products from any other country, I will not hold it against the Chinese people if other countries can't compete with them and I am sure they would buy our products unless prevented by politicians.

I have never heard of there being 'massive oil reserves' in the South China Sea. And we have the right to speak up on matter of international laws and norms. An international tribunal ruled that China didn't have a claim over the islands there and China responded by militarising them.

China is punishing our trade because they were trying to Finlandise us. Instead we made moves to shore up our sovereignty against their cyber attacks, bribery and influence operation. If you think there is any doubt about this then just look at the list of 14 demands they issued.

I head out always with a fellow boat crew. I radio in and out to the coast guard, i have all the relevant safety equipment and i pick my day. I have been to the fads off Sydney in the boat 20-30 times in the past few years with no issues along with heading much wider - not worried at all in the size of the boat one bit, more worried about when and where i can hook onto a YFT! 🙂

I  would be. Especially in winter when the yellowfin are on. Westerly winds can blow up without warning and you will have to head straight in to them to get back. There is little lee effect from the land once you get out wide. I wouldn't even go to the Peak in that boat in winter time.

  14. I have never been checked by the Water Police but have been by Maritime NSW. About half the encounters have been unpleasant. One tried to tell me my lifejacket was borderline for getting a fine. It had never been used, or sat on - just a bit dirty from being stowed away.

On another occasion I was told off for passing within 10m of another boat at speed and that hitting a wave could have resulted in a collision. In fact I was at least 60m away and not going particularly fast. He was totally adamant about it. I thought every schoolboy in the country knew that 2 objects viewed from a distance appear closer than they really are.

Was yours happening only when you were in gear as well?

It has only happened once in Neutral - and that was just as I kicked it back into Neutral from Forward gear. It was "hiccuping" (for lack of a better term) a fair bit in Forward when I kicked it back.

Just seems weird? Like it's load dependent ?

Edit: Sorry Luvit, just read your post again and clicked on the 'oil system'. This motor has oil mixed in with the fuel, and isn't oil injected, if this makes a difference?

It shouldn't cause any problems (running out of fuel) if it's a  premix motor with carbies. Just make sure it's fully primed again and as others have suggested check the condition (and maybe swap for new) the fuel bulb, lines, connectors.
