  1. @Drop Bear sounds like you had a cracker day in the end...I have to remind myself sometimes that catching fish isn't always what it is about (although it is hard not to feel a bit down). Still a good feed in the crate!

Must admit have to spend some more time in the south as the north bay is just tough going ... although I hate to say it I reckon I have mastered the whiting fishing up here. One thing I definitely have noticed is that they won't bit much if the bait isn't moving. And generally speaking they prefer it closer to the bottom than floating - guess that makes sense as they are bottom feeders. They still amaze me how hard they hit when they are on. Maybe I should turn my whiting skills into Snapper skills with fresh bait!

When I had my 4m tinny I spent a lot of weekends launching from different locations to fish they bay pending wind directions & tides, So I was always driving from different angles covering lots of areas of the bay to fish Bulwer , curtain artificial, spitfire channel , Mud island etc,  then from there it was a matter of just trial and error, talking with guys at boats ramps,  using the fishing forums for info and keeping a massive excel spreadsheet of my fishing trip details on moon phases ,tides, water temps and times fish were caught for bite period times ,

Finding new ground in the bay isn't easy, Id say a lot of luck and lot of hours returning home with donuts ,  This year is my 18th snapper season in a row and I'm finally getting results,

I use the Boating HD app on my phone these days , Lowrance GPS for  Navionics  & a HDS9 Gen 3  sounder on my Surtees which is all standard easy to use stuff ,  The only thing I do is when I find a spot I will run over and around this spot 5 or 6 times from all angles to see if its legit or not.  From there I generally throw a bait jig on and see what baits holding in that area , from there Ill fish it for a while or ill come back at another stage when I think fish might be on the chew and see what happens

But best thing is to be on the water lots trialing different techniques to chase big fish.

Pro tips there for sure @Cobiaaddict! 18th season...that's a massive amount of investment and shows obviously....

Sorry to muddy the post but what Surtees do you have again and why over Bar Crusher?

  3. Hi all,

I saw an ad for a JBS 5.2 Centre Cab drop into my FB feed. Seems like they were well built plate boats for their day with fine entry but a flat bum.

Seems like a sad ending to what was by the sounds of it a fantastic local QLD boating company that has closed down.

    Anyone got experience or reviews?

There are stacks of options but yes you need to camp in designated areas. It is a fantastic place to camp.

We stayed on the main beach not far north of the middle track. There are options up and down the east beach, just below the Light house, at Yellow Patch, between Cowan Cowan and Bulwah, near the Tangalooma wrecks and other places. They are all pretty nice with unique things to each of them.

Thanks mate. I'd really like to do the boat camping thing. Take the boys over (8 and 12)...and camp but have the boat close by. I guess the alternative is to just anchor up at Bulwer or close by the wrecks.

  5. Actually headed out today. Just to blow some cobwebs off. Did the northern beacons from M4 to Spitfire and then did some drifting to donuts. Think I got I couple of nudges but was small. Also had the pots out in a new spot. Plenty in them just way too small. But good news for summer I guess.

Was going to head north again tomorrow but going to Mud and Reclamation wall.

    Will report back

  6. Hi AFO gang,

Been a little quiet on the posting front for the last month or so. Have been doing some fishing here and there with a couple of great trips with @Luvit and @Luke Landrunner off Mooloolaba a while back. That was a pretty awesome day although bloody hell the weather turned shite really quick on the way back but the Grady White kept us safe! Thanks again @Luvit

In between have been doing some basic whiting fishing north of Scarbs / Newport and the Cockle Banks with some pretty good success mixed in with some crabs.

But I have some more time this weekend and with the weather looking the way it is I might take the Scout past the northern artificial / coffee rocks and try my hand at some reef bashing from Flinders up to Hutchies and around. Anybody been out there recently or heading out on Saturday?

All the reports are showing fish fish fish and I'd love to get into some decent reef fish for a change.

    Cheers

It's never fun and I try my best to not have this happen on the boat. Just in a rush trying to pack and a small mishap.

So what do we call that? If it's not Master Baiting...Captain Cook perhaps? Either way takes a lot of practice and hard work 🤩 Least it was on free spool
