Also, the lagoon at North West doesn’t have an entrance as far as I know. As I said in my story the only way to most coral atoll lagoons is to go over the top. Lady Musgrave is a bit different because the Yanks blasted a channel through the coral during the Second World War so you can enter at any tide.

    Fitzroy reef is the same.

  2. Mate thats the best story i have read in a while. Ever considered a career as an author? Shame you didnt get to have a good crack fishing but its an experience i dont reckon you will forget! Do you reckon you would go back to North west if the weather looked good?

P.S thanks for typing your story up, it must have taken ages.

Yeah. It’s a 75hp Mariner now. There are a few outboards in my area that would suit. I am confident we can buy the boat for a good price. Even $2750 wouldn’t be a horrible deal. Obviously I am going to start much lower and work my way up.  The boat is just going to waste, I am sure the people will want to see it go.

Sounds alright, refer to my other post about cracks when you go for a look.

A v-nose punt isn’t ideal, I know. But the boat is an excellent price and if it’s in good condition, I will get a sea trial. I have done some research and found they don’t ride as badly as people say. You need to be parallel to the waves and they ride perfect. They aren’t good head on or on the quarter.  I talked to some people and they have been out to the reef in a 3.9m tinny and out to Fitzroy Island on a 14ft flat bottom punt. If the weather is 5-10 knots, you can go as far as your fuel will allow. Anyways, if the boat has anything wrong with it, I will leave it.

Yeah the guys above are spot on. It only takes one time for the weather to turn sour on you to make a great day on the water turn deadly. For 5 years i went a lot further offshore than my seawasp was designed to. I recently posted about what happend to me when i got caught out. The 5m is a much more suitable boat, you will thank yourself for it later.

P.s A week or two ago 2 guys died after their 3.8m boat overturned in moreton bay. Sadly this is the reality of what happends when you come under pre-pared.

    Happy boat hunting

    Regards,

  5. Hi mate, Is it the 30hp yamaha 3 cylinder 2 stroke? If so i have had one since 2004 when bought it brand new out of the dealership. It was my first "big purchase" being 15. Anyway, i have flogged it ever since. I only give it a service once a year and a flush out every couple of months. If it has good compression, give it a service and i cant see why it couldnt be a good engine for you.

I assume your talkng about the 440 jabiru? I have never owned or ridden in one but seeing as it is a punt style boat i reckon it would bang your teeth out with a bit of sea. In nice weather it would probably be fine. A fishing monthly article reckons they get 27 knots out of one with a 40 so i reckon you get around 23 knots out of a 30.

I would be checking for cracks along keel weld, transome weld, ribs, etc.

    Happy boat hunting

    Regards,

Some idiot posing as a under cover fisheries officer is doing the rounds confiscating fish off kids at the donnybrook jetty today.  Told the kids there's a no take on flathead and bream for 2 weeks . People word your kids up to ask for I.d . Might be a good idea to keep in contact with your kids while their fishing as this idiot is obviously preying on kids he may also be a paedophile . Obviously needs to have his head held under water.

    Cheers

Man there must be some weirdos around. Thanks for the public service announcement.

Thanks again for your info, will be a month or so before I am off that way again.  Which weather app you find the best that way?, And in

time wise how far if you have been from Scarbourgh?  1hour to Buwler? I have  been north side from manly ..

I use seabreeze and windyty. Just remeber these apps like all weather forecasting  can be wrong. I agree with dropbear no more than 12 knots of wind will be fun.

P.S it is about 17 nautical mile from Scarborgh to Bulwer. Looking at your profile boat and depending on speed 40mins to 1 hour would be a good guess i reckon.

@Old Scaley invited me out for a salt session before my Glenlyon trip and I couldn't say no.

We headed off at 6.30am and headed straight for the good yabby bank where the yabbies are mainly above average size. I was happy to not fall in this time. Steve was a bit slow on the pumping but I was picking them up at a rate of knots, peaking at 7 from one pump.

Then we got down to the fishing with the main target being some summer whiting. Steve was on the board early with a keeper whiting and then I found a decent sized flounder and then the bream came through. They were all a decent size, so we kept a few for a feed.

We hit Gold Bank as we slowly meandered our way back towards the ramp picking up a few whiting and Steve getting a trevelly. Not sure on the end score but I brought home 3 flounder around the same edible size, with Steve keeping the feed of bream and several good whiting.

The covid19 holiday makers were once again out in force, with the water full of craft all day. Good day to be out there with the sun shining and a light breeze coming in late in the morning.

Thanks for another top day on the water, Steve.

PS  We also nailed 3 or 4 flatties. They were under but the one that may have been close spat the hook boatside.

    Sounds like a cracker day!

That's lucky you made it out relatively unscathed, I would be very nervous ever crossing a bar. I guess it's just one of those things where it's all about experience, Nirvana. The more you do it the more you get used to it!

    Cheers Hamish

Experince definetly helps. If i could give any advice it would be to pick your weather. Some days like last wednesday are flat. You just have to remember the fish will always be out there. Theres always next time.

    Cheers,
