You could also invest in a light spinning combo like a Shimano Sienna Sonic combo from BCF, that would work for fishing for small fish like dart, flathead, bream, and whiting from closer gutters in the surf.

One of your 4000 size reels coupled with your 9 foot rod will do the trick comfortably. Load up the reel with some Platypus 20lb and you'll be fishing.

To be honest, mulloway are fairly easily subdued.
I run a 4000 stradic or a 4500 baitrunner for jew without problems. 4-8kg rod will easily handle them.
Have caught metre plus jew several times on 3-6kg rods with 2500 reels running 16lb braid without needing more stick or cranking power.
Nailed a few threadies around the metre mark on stradic 1000 on a 2-5kg rod and 12lb braid without problems, just a little more patience.
Fighting fish hard often results in lost fish as well....jacks are a classic example....caught them in the high 50's and low 60's many times on 6 or 8 lb braid on 2-4kg rods.....the harder you fight them the dirtier they are and the more you lose.

The effect of barometric pressure on a swim bladder volume is nonsense.
A swim bladder is regulated by the fish to adjust to depth pf water it is swimming in....same way your ears adjust to altitude.
if they are down 10 feet there is an extra 14.7psi of water pressure than at the surface, hence the swim bladder is pressurised by 14.7psi to protect it's organs and to adjust it's bouyancy.
As a fish rises a foot or two to take a baitfish it adjusts this pressure automatically to maintain it's correct bouyancy and protect it's organs.
Now how much difference do you think the barometric pressure will affect this process inside the fish or change the bloating of the swim bladder??
Understand that 1010 mb/hPa = 14.649 psi and 1020 mb/hPa = 14.794 psi is a difference of 0.145 psi which also equals about 1.18 inches in elevation in water.....(within the first 10 feet of depth that is)
Sort of blows your theory and superstitions on barometric pressure influence on swim bladders to pieces.

    Hi guys and girls,
It has been a while since I headed out chasing jacks, but woke up with the jack itch that needed scratching.
The conditions, well, all seemed against having any success, but my stubbornness was stronger than the "should just stay in bed" conditions.
We had heavy rain falls the day before right into the night, which meant a lot of cold fresh water flowing into the creek, I have never had any luck with jacks after really heavy rains and thought it was probably because the jacks headed deeper out of the colder fresh ?? Just a theory.
Also, the barometer was at 999.9, I have only just started following what the air pressure is doing but have been told it's not a good time to hit the jacks when it's this low.😒
I hit the water as the sun started poking its head over the edge of the ocean, no wind made for perfect kayak conditions and was greeted with the usual early morning chorus of birds, frogs and cicadas.
I fished the early hours with a surface lure, mmd splash prawn, with no luck. Started to think I should have stayed in bed and should have actually "listened" to what the conditions were telling me and stop being a stubborn old bastard.......but I'm too old to change my ways now.😂🤣

As the sun started getting higher in the sky, I changed to a Zman paddle tail and after a few casts had a jack follow it from the snags right to the kayak, grabbing it just before I lifted it out of the water. Not a huge fish, but any jack is a good jack.
I persisted with the same plastic with only one other follow that swiped at it but changed its mind at the last second.

I decided to turn around and head for home as the sun was starting to find its warmth and I had left the sunscreen in the car. I always forget one thing every session, but at least it was my paddle this time lol, that day wasn't much fun trying to paddle with a large palm frond.🤡
I tied on the good old gold bomber and chucked it at all the same snags I'd hit on the way up the creek and wasn't too long before a better jack was landed.
Both fish were released to fight another day and I headed home happy my stubbornness had paid off.
I guess the moral of the story is don't not go fishing if the conditions don't seem quite right,
and if one style of lure isn't working try mixing things up a bit.
    Cheers.

I have only just started following what the barometer readings are each time I head out.
So far, very limited time of taking readings, I have still caught plenty of fish when the readings are low.
I had a jack session a few days ago where the reading was 999.9, really low, and still found a couple of good fish.
I think the air pressure dose have an effect on the fishing,
but I wouldn't NOT go fishing going on a low reading.
Just my limited knowledge 2 cents.

1020 fish aplenty I think they say. I use to worry about these things and tides etc. now I have kids and limited time to fish so long as the wind is okay, which it will be in the morning I go fishing. Even if I don’t catch anything I still enjoy it and always something to learn!

    Hi fellow fishos,
I am unsure if it is worth going fishing at nudgee beach (shallow water depth) as the air pressure is so low. Do you think low pressure affect estuary fishing?
My last few days there were very quiet. There were some bait fish but no bite from predators.
    What do you think?

Thanks Hamish, it sounds it had effects on your river fishing as well. I had heard that fish in the river can always swim deeper to counter the low pressure effects. However in nudgee beach there isn't little depth fish can dive, so i guess the effects are stronger. But i would love to hear others real experiences.

    Hey ubnt
Recently, for a lot of my sessions in the river, I have noticed the air pressure has been around 1013, and the fishing has been quite crap. I believe when the air pressure is low or decreasing, the fishes swim bladder or another organ bloats, causing them to become quite weak and consequently not eat baits as aggressively. Alternatively, when I have had some of my better sessions in the river the air pressure has been closer to 1020. Obviously this isn’t always the case but it seems when the air pressure is higher the fish are more active. I don’t know if this applies at Nudgee Beach for smaller estuary species but I’m sure it would have some effect,
    Cheers Hamish

I started off the session yesterday arvo by packing my shark fishing gear and a selection of shark bait with the intent of catching …whiting. I Walked down to the jetty and set out my shark rod first And began cast netting. It wasn’t long before I could see big schools of herring splashing around the end of the jetty, I cast my net and caught about twenty. I cast out my spare old rod with a herring just to keep me from being bored. I started tidying my cart up when I heard the slow tick of my herring rod, I turned around and my reel started to scream . I hooked into it and whatever it was took a big run. Halfway through the fight it managed to wrap me around something but I managed to get it out, it started to tire and after one last dash for the jetty i got it to the surface and I saw the huge silver bat they call a mulloway. After a tense moment trying to get him in the dilly he was safe on the jetty
Sadly he had the usual barotrauma and also swallowed the hook. So I quickly dispatched him and took it home for quite a few dinners.
    Cheers Thorbjörn

Thanks Steve, I think it might’ve had something to do with the low air pressures, most of my salmon have been caught at around 1020 but a lot of these sessions were at 1015 or below.

My Caloundra day was a good call as there were few others around, however the call was bad insofar as the fishing was rubbish. Managed 1 38cm grassie and several small sharks about 70cm. That was as exciting as it got. Lucky @Leosonfire was with me as we needed to deploy the anchor a few of times, in 20 metres at one stage.

Fun fact: I heard on the radio last week that those clear jellyfish looking things that look like a small bent cigar and wash up on the beach are actually sea snail egg casings.

I don't really know what lazy moon snails are @ubnt, but I reckon it's safe to say that if collecting these for bait is prohibited by fisheries, then it's not allowed.

No, it isn't legal. No take means no take for any reason.
