I caught the fishing bug as a 10 year old pulling endless butter bream up from the jetty and cooking them whole over a little fire on the beach. Great days. Everything Ted says above is spot on. Depending on the experience level of your 12 year old, I would stick to sections A and C. Section B can produce good fish but be prepared to lose a lot of terminal tackle. Take plenty because as Ted said, it is dear there. Same for bait. You can get yabbies near the caravan park if you have a pump.
Hope you enjoy your time there.

    You too, Gad.
Tipping didn't get any easier this week. Especially with all the injuries to consider.

    Yes mate, outside.
Not particularly off Moreton, just offshore in general.

I'm no Einstein. Get that out before I go any further.

I use the wave rider sites.
    Wave rider
They will give you average wave heights as well as peak heights.
The period is the gap between the peaks, and the zero crossing is how many seconds you will spend either side of the middle average of the wave height. The up and down, so to speak.
The higher the number, the bigger and more powerful the swell, but again, up and down motion does not bother me.

Good old willy weather, bom and windy app for the area you're in to get an idea of wind speeds.
Wind is the big player I'm my personal experience....

All good having a glass out day in 2m swell.
Put 15kn of sw wind in top and it becomes lumpy.
Happens a lot up at 1770.

Current will play a small factor but I've found that more on the bar crossings during peak tidal flows.
Wide Bay bar is a classic example.

You won't have much that will bother you in Moreton Bay with that new boat you're getting.
Practice manoeuvring it in strong winds and you're away.

You got me there @Junky. Forgot about school holidays. I might have to take @AUS-BNE-FISHO and @charlie.hans.fishing out for a session. I have a top cover but it is no use when I'll be out winding in fish all day. 🤪🤣
Hopefully there won't be any volcanoes erupting !

Nice to hear that they got a great fish. Well done on taking them out and providing them with the opportunity and knowledge to catch it.

    Thanks Greg,
If it was the same fish it's shite outta luck this time because we kept this one as it was a bay pb for the person i took out with me who is terminally ill. We used to fish together a long time ago and it was great to see the smile on his face

I finally had enough and took on the conditions yesterday. I got up at stupid o'clock and the bay was windy, cold, wet and snotty. But the fish count was worth it. Bagged on snapper in no time with a few other nice surprises chucked. Here is one of the better fish. 63cm Grassy.!

There are plenty of land based opportunities and their can be a wonderful variety of tasty fish there along the rocks. I generally fish with a long rod (10'6" or more) as you need to get away from the small fish that hang in close. For us it produces squire, grassies, legal spangled emperor, estuary cod, mulloway, mangrove jacks, purple spotted tuskfish, black spotted tuskfish and lots of other stuff. I generally use a 2/0 or 3/0 hook of a set of 3/0 gangs and vary my sinker based on the run.

    Many thanks @mangajack, @rayke1938, @ellicat, @crazywalrus, and @Old Scaley!
Such helpful feedback, and I really appreciate the very specific intel you've taken the time to share @crazywalrus, it'll help us to really make the most of our time there. I'll make sure we are well equipped with bait and tackle before we get to the island. We won't have a boat @mangajack so I'll be guided by the map with sections A, B and C that crazywalrus shared. Really excited to test out the tips provided on this forum! Thank you 🙏
