The Mad Hughesy got a reaction from Drop Bear in Trying to get the bug to bite early
After a few successful moments of taking my 2yo out in the kayak for very short paddles, decided its time to try and have a fishing session with him on board. Only paddled about 200m from the launch point incase it all went sour. It all started with tears as he wanted to play with the car instead...but after a fire truck going screaming over the bridge some clever distracting by dad, we were off! My game plan was simple, servo prawns and one rod. catch anything at all to show him and go home happy. Turned out the bream loved the servo prawns. Caught a few legal fish and a few under sized. Not bad for a 1.5 hour session, 200m from a boat ramp and using servo prawns. Little bloke had a few nerves and was happier to see the fish released "bye bye fish, BYE BYE FISH!!!), but he loves to keep looking back at the photos of the trip so ill take that as a success. On the plus side, it means i can get more fishing in as ill just take him with me now.
any tips on how to get kids not to hate wearing their pfd?

ask any commercial fisherman, they will agree with you. they stalk pro crab boats and literally sit under the boat waiting for all the underasized crabs to be thrown back in with an open mouth. there was some footage last year of a trawler with hundreds of sharks around it.

ive fished Fraser on charter and the sharks were so thick you couldnt keep a hooked fish on for longer than 10 seconds without sharks smashing it. fast way to loose jigs.
just wonder if commercial sharking of bigger than 1.5m would have an imapact on controlling the numbers or not.

much like the kayaing launching facilities around seq, id imagine a thorough hose would do the trick. leaving your gear out in the sun would probably help too

general rule of thumb is to try and match the lure colour to the water colour. eg dont use a white lure in muddy waters.
a good trick is to watch professionals fishing your area on youtube. often they will talk about the gear they use. ill try and find some for you, should be loads for the goldy

the hard part with under or oversized fish is the fact that this comp is now bigger than just QLD. different rules for different states.
i feel like jacks, threadfin could be replaced with an emperor category and a parrot/tusk fish category. i mean you could have an endless list of fish categories, but that just doesn't feel right for the comp. i don't think a jack has ever been submitted and only one threadfin has even been submitted from memory. One year i just had a combined threadfin/jew category.

thats a monster journey. Moreton bay can turn nasty really really quickly. If youre really keen on chasing some better fish, go offshore from the sunshine coast. you dont need to go far to reach some great fishing ground that hold loads of reef fish and pelagics too.
