Cobiaaddict reacted to charlie.hans.fishing in brissy river session - we finally got one.
    Hi everyone.
This report is a little late but I just haven't had time to write it up.
@AUS-BNE-FISHO and I took the early train and ferry trip out to one of our spots on the river, and to our surprise we came across one of Hamish's other fishing mates.
They were there before we were, and had caught a good sized tailor, about 50cm. (apologies for the grainy photo, it wasn't mine)

Hamish started cast netting and I jigged for herring with a sabiki and eventually we had plenty of good livies.
We sent our rods out and waited patiently.
I don't remember everything that happened exactly but I believe Hamish's mate hooked up to a catty, little squire, and nice sized bream.
It was quiet for a bit and then again, the other fella's rod had a big take - he was hooked up to a nice Jewie.
After a fun little fight the fish was netted nicely and was soon on deck - an 86cm Jewie:

We must've encountered a nice school of them, because within the next few minutes his other rod went off - the Herring were proving to be good baits.
Now here is where it becomes debatable whether it was MY fish or not 😅, because he had started the fight but offered to give the rod to me (This would have been my first "big one" since starting fishing, so without doubt I took up his offer, haha.)

A nerve racking fight ensued but we got the fish in no issues. I couldn't have been happier because we've have spent countless sessions on the river hunting down a thread or jew and were finally rewarded.
Although not even legal, 74cm, I was still stoked with the fish:

Things calmed down after we got the photos and released the fish.
It was perhaps an hour or two later that I had left to go get Hamish and I a drink from the nearby shop, when I came back surprised to the other guys cleaning a second 86cm jewie!
It was a lucky day for them - I think they salvaged about 8kg of fillets to share between the 4 of them.

Overall, it was a productive session with plenty of nice fish caught.
Apologies for not having all the tide and moon stats, etc, that @AUS-BNE-FISHO would generally include in a report.
I decided to write this one as he already has a fair few to write himself.

    Thanks,
    Charlie.

Well I may have been absent but I have been fishing and plan to trickle some varied reports in as I find time.
A big quest for me and my bother in law Joel over the last 18 months has been really sussing out shallow water snapper in the bay. We have done well and what is better is we rarely find them where the car parks of boats are. As challenging as it can be the most consistent fishing has come from really finesse set ups displaying small plastics with long pauses. Picture a small prawn or shrimp moving along the rubbly bottom to imagine what the plastic would look like. Anyway some pictures of the better fish with millions of smaller but still legal fish in between... The biggest one there for me was 76cm which I consider a good effort on 12lb leader in 3 meters of water.

Obviously a lot more than snapper in the bay and this technique brings in a lot of by catch... Note the queenie actually swallowed a 30cm squire which got lodged in its throat...

As for locations there is no consistency here geographically. We have been fishing a wide range (away from other boats if we can). Or we are looking for is either rubbly bottom (does not need to be much) or bait or in a perfect world both!

Fresh off the drier is a Snyder Glas blank I salvaged from a local rod builder. At 7’6 it is likely an FMT90 but with no model number on the butt one can’t be positive. I built it for a mate to chase reefies in the bay with a baitrunner 4500b and 6kg mono. He chose the pink and white colour scheme and I added the grey to match the grips and blank but didn’t realise it shared its colour scheme with Alf Stewart’s favourite bird. Early bird gets the bay reefies I guess!

Finished the kingy rod for my mate Ash. He’s in Newcastle so it’s coming into kingfish time for him. This rod will primarily fish livies and chuck stickbaits if required. Matched to a Saragosa 10k and 50lb braid.

I estimate I spent 10 hours on this rod. I can usually whack them out in 3-4 but this took a bit extra - double over wrapped guides, marbling, chevron wrap. 4 coats of epoxy. Hopefully he won’t need another one!

    Hey All,
Been a bit quiet this past 12-months, with not much fishing due to lack of motivation & house reno's ,
I think I managed 3 trips in 2022 and didn't catch a fish/ apart from catching live baits & squid,  not sure if that counts,
So I sold the Surtees in October 2022 as it hadn't been used enough and the offer was more than I paid for it, wasn't even advertised, just a random guy at the ramp liked it, so he bought it.   So, I took it with plans on doing something else with money, but after a trip to Fraser Island before easter for a wedding the itch came back to get back on the water soon,
So last week I bit the bullet and ordered another Surtees, not a Centre console but this time a 610 Gamefisher  with a few tasteful additions along with a 130Hp 4 stroke and Aluminum Trailer.  The Build will start at the end of May I believe and will be completed sometime in August ready for shipping.
Should arrive early October from NZ and will take about 2 weeks to get fitted out and get her on the water, will be a tough 6 months waiting, but I'm sure it will be worth it.
If I get any build photos i will try to add them up here once it gets started.
    Cheers Josh <><
