BinaryFart got a reaction from Ed. in Has Anyone Used Wft Gliss Line
Apologies for the thread necromancy 🙂 I was looking for other people's views on Gliss and other than a few articles in online mags, there didn't seem to be a lot out there. So I decided to write down my thoughts on it - Not my usual way of doing things, but I figured it was suitable for my first post here 🙂

if the fee goes towards helping boost the rec industry like in other states, then absolutely. small price to pay for a better future. Same way fresh fishos pay for their SIP

I can't find anything that looks like a balance sheet accounting for all fees paid, but it does detail the projects and initiatives funded by the Fishing Trusts.

I was pondering the rumour @ellicathad heard about Mulloway hunting the edges of the dirty water after the floods and what other strategies I might employ in the coming days to catch some fish in this dirty water.
I am itching to get out fishing again so thought I would use Google to do some research.
Found this article really interesting and wondered if anyone remembers having the same experience? Whether we might look forward to the same conditions in the following months or years?
Maybe those members with the scientific backgrounds could provide an explanation or tell me it was just coincidence?

I have found that the snapper season after a flood year tends to be really good. Not sure why but probably something to do with all the bait getting flushed and nutrients etc. this is after the water has cleared up and salinity is back to normal though. I remember specifically 2012 the threadies and snapper were thick as I’d ever seen them back when I used to fish the port of Brisbane

I have not experienced it, but have learnt from others that mulloway will hunt the edge of the dirty water in times like this.
I'm not sure on the effects on spawning, but floods are natural and have been happening for longer than man has existed so I would think that the effect would not be disastrous. I can't see how fish that can do salt, fresh and everything in between would be affected. Maybe a delay ??

Hey All - Hope all of you affected by the eastern coast floods are safe, and haven't had too much damage. For those of you that have, I hope you're ok and it hasn't been too devastating! Hopefully we'll be able to help somehow soon, either directly or by donations or something. Stay safe!
Not to be too quick to change the topic to fishing, but as well as the human impact of the floods, how do you all reckon it'll impact this season's fishing? Obviously while the floods are actually happening, fishing is likely to be blown out (and probably unsafe anyway), but after the floods recede, what will be the the longer-term impacts?
Bass and EPs are starting their spawn migration downstream (or have been for some time is some places) - I imagine their spawn will be buggered up. How about estuary & harbour species like Mulloway, Kingfish Flatties, Bream etc? The Mullet run would normally kick off soon as well... If the reproductive cycles of these fish are interrupted, when will those effects become apparent?
I am a relatively inexperienced angler - only a few years fishing and I'm not very knowledgeable on the spawning or behaviour cycles of these species. I'm Interested to hear everyone's opinions!

Well my estuary system has been dirty for a few months now because of rain we have been getting so I haven’t been fishing for quite a few months the river was slowly getting better and I was looking forward to be able to go fishing then in the last 5 days this massive flood came and I’m not gonna be fishing my estuary system until summer or spring by the looks of it my whole town was basically underwater I went down to my local spot today to have a look and the river was up by like 20m I couldn’t even walk there because the water was so high no sign of the jettie or the whole fishing spot at all the whole area was underwater by heaps .heaps of trees had fallen there was destroyed cars and broken bits of road and mess was everywhere . It was tragic to see

    Hey BinaryFart
Generally, it’ll make the river really dirty. Maybe flush out a lot of the rubbish and more saline fish species.
I’m not 100% on big floods though, but I’d imagine just stronger affects.
    Cheers Hamish

    hmmmm, fishing licence fees, hey.
over 250,000 recreational boats/crafts are registered in Qld (figure obtained from a govt. site in 2020) some time in the late 1970`s- early 80`s a recreational use fee (RUF) was introduced in our boating registration, etc. fees.
My current rego renewal notice, shows that to be $23.05 now. It was brought in so these fees could go specifically into recreational boating and fishing coffers: educational materials, programs/activities, printed boating and fishing guides, grants to recfishing groups, etc.
Then came the LNP government in 2012 with pre election promises of rose gardens for every boating rec- fisho...
what eventuated was the recreational use fee (RUF) was put into the general revenue basket with the loss of educational materials, programs/activities, printed boating and fishing guides, grants to recfishing groups, etc....

Now don`t get me wrong, I`m not an ageing cynical old **** but I wouldn`t trust any politician or government collection of liars with any additional, out of my pocket, fees, taxes, etc to add to the revenue for these services that they already provide (apparently) and often mismanage, through our present fees and charges.

eg: do we really need architectural designed additions to our boat ramp facilities... gardens etc, multiple pathways, awrd winning dunnies, that actually lessen the parking spaces in the area

@SuperHans - A balanced opinion! The pay walling of a "natural birthright" access to the common property is an interesting idea and I hadn't considered that angle before. I guess a counter to that argument is that the common property (fishing) could be said to belong to future generations as well, and licence fees (if used correctly) can help to safe guard future access to that same common property.
It really does come down to how the funds are used. I don't hold a lot of faith in politicians - either their honesty or competency. That's why I think the upsurge of new anglers as a result of the pandemic is an excellent thing! Every new angler is a potential (voting) advocate for fishing rights, and there's nothing politicians like more voters 😄. Increased numbers of anglers has its down sides certainly, but with the increased fees comes the opportunity to educate these new anglers on things like size and bag limits (which are definitely not enforced very consistently in Sydney).
I'm definitely not a fan of over regulation, but fishing licence fees seem to work well enough in NSW. They do seem to be invested back into the sport, and overall I think it is a net-positive. I guess it depends on how much weight you place on the principal of "access by birthright" - You've got me thinking about that now.

100% yes from me. The benefits to fishing in the states that have the licences are really good and I want it in QLD
So yes... did I say yes?

In NSW the funds go to fishing groups like OzFish and they use the funds to improve fish habitat. I hope it would be similar if we ever get licences in QLD

I'd want to read to fine print before I agree to anything that expects fisho's to dish out more revenue.
I shell out enough money yearly to the government. They make huge amounts of money off fisherman as it stands (gst).

Once it's introduced it never gets withdrawn so reading the fine print, and holding bureaucrats to their word is important.
I will not pay an annual fee just so public servants can fill their back pocket. There is enough of this culture happening already.

Yes lures are far better for flathead never seen the point of targeting them on bait tbh I think it’s a waste of time I think you would be better off targeting bream or whiting on bait
