Went to western arm with Rick and Joy. Shrimp traps a bit light on but good size. We were restricted to fishing in the bays due to the wind. Found one spot that was ok but as the boat was yawing a lot we kept on getting snagged besides feeding the prolific barred grunter. Found a couple pf trees where we were able to tie off fore and aft but the barred grunter still prolific to the delight of the eagle. We finished off early with a total of 26 bass ,one tandanus and a nice yella. All tagged and released,

Consider a Mooloolaba Pick anchor https://www.whitworths.com.au/mooloolaba-pick-anchor Thats what all the boats have on the swains that I have been on. Shackle to the top then lay chain down the shaft and heavy zip ties to what you would normally attach to. If its stuck you just pull back over the top and it snaps the zip ties and you then pull the anchor up from the head. Mate bought a very expensive version of one (cannot remember the name) but it uses a sheer bolt to hold the fins in place and all you do it drive over the top and it sheers the pin and the fins collapse. A guy up in Mackay makes them. Very neat.

Latest generation Stradic (FM) is so close to the latest generation Shimano Sustain in smoothness it’s not funny. Hard pressed to justify the increase in cost, except the Sustain is sexy black and maybe a bit lighter thanks to MGL rotor Handle goes in just as easy as any of my other Shimano’s - just need to wind it against the thread to settle it into the lead and then wind it in.

I have owed two Stradic's. Never had a problem. These days I use Penn. The past 2 years their reels have got a lot better. ( IMO )

3 metres of 8mm will be sufficient. I run that on a 4.7m ally runabout with a 4kg sand anchor or reef anchor. Never had any problems with the reef anchor pulling or the chain getting stuck. I wouldn't go rope to anchor, as rope has some buoyancy, so your anchor may not set properly. Also there is the risk of the rope wearing through on reef. Anchor socks are great, but the drawback is they collect and hold sediment.

My opinion.... No dramas at all swapping handle over, that I know of. The handle always winds on the way you wind to retrieve line. Makes sense, no? So if the handle is on the right hand side, it's righty tighty, lefty loosy. If the handle is on the left side of the reel, it will be lefty tightly, righty loosy. That could be the only drama I could think of, that and the handle may become really tight to undo, but drop a touch of anti seize on the thread and it will be fine, well that's what I do, but I use Daiwa. Hope that is sort of clear.

I have a 6m plate boat that is heavy. I use 10m of 8mm gal chain. Always use reef anchors and never had to cut one off. It will even hold in that silty mud in the Brisbane River. Occasionally it will not hold, but only in really strong, full moon type currents. Reset and it is normally all okay.

Hi, I’m looking at buying my first stratic soon, I know the handles screw in but I have heard reports of people having trouble swapping the handle over from left to right. Can anyone help?

Hey guys While I was up north I ended up having to cut off my expensive manson anchor (which also means replacing the double braided rope & chain since the old rope no longer has a thimble and apparently you can't resplice double braided rope once it's been wet & taut), so I've decided that to prevent a repeat of this I'll invest in a reef anchor. It's less likely to get permanantly snagged, and I'm less concerned about chopping off a $20 anchor than a $300 one. I'm gonna use the old anchor rope with it and just tie it onto the chain with an achor bend knot... but that begs the question of how much chain do I need? I know the "standard" answer to that question is "the same as the length of the boat", and the "extreme" answer is "as much as you can store", but that assumes a "standard" anchor and I keep seeing posts in various places that say when using a reef anchor on reef or rocks you should reduce or even omit the chain altogether as the chain is often the bit that snags or damages the reef. So what's the concensus? Same as the boat (abt 4.5m)? A bit less (say 3m)? Use chain but put it in a chain sock? None at all? What say you all? Matt

That size lure is going to attract large fish. As long as you're using a decent reel with some good casting PE, you will get away with it using the technique bob mentions above. Rods are just the delivery system for the lure. Let the fish fight the drag in this case. Good luck.

We had a similar day yesterday. The only legal fish was dropped beside the boat. That's fishing.

Took the kayak out up castle hill way. Got this 42cm fella. That was the fruit of my efforts for the day. 0800 till 1400. Flicked a lot of plastic. Might take some bait next time.

If cast 30gm lead fish with a 10-15gm rod just fine, I have however busted the tips on some cheaper rods doing that. The trick is to cast with as little force as possible and let the weight of the lure do the work for you. Load up the rod and sort of lob it. Just except the fact that if you mess up your probably going to break a tip off. That difference in weight is a bit on the extreme side and will increase the risk, so your technique will have to be spot on, it is definitely possible but not advisable as they say.

Hey everyone, I recently came across an amzing looking lure, the mmd Whiting Glide Bait, only problem is its 50g and I don't really have a rod that matches that weight. The only rod ive got that could possibly throw it on is an Atomic Arowzz Easturay spinning rod with a casting wait of 5-21g, I have thrown heavier weights on it before and it held up fine, I do have hope simpliy because of videos of youtubers throwing large lures of there lighter baitcasting setup.

Found a significant school of Threadfin and baby bull shark tailing in 1.5 m of water this morning , right where they’ve been for weeks, so didn’t have to go looking for them. Helped myself to a couple before the wind started to puff up a bit , then took off for home. Had a double hookup on the second one , but it got off before I could attend to it , which was a bit of a bummer. 2 was enough , so left them feeding , for next time. Beautiful clean fish off the sand , full of banana prawns , bled out and iced down well , they should taste good! A start for team south for May. Threadfin 1010mm and 910mm.

Getting kids out for a fish, getting yourself back out there, laughs, fish, and your favourite spot for brekky. Hard to beat.

School free day. End of their Holidays. Arrived around sunrise. Top morning. One of the easiest places to go rock fishing. First up a nice drummer ( Released ) The boys caught 2 tailor. I caught two nice snapper 45cm & 48cm. The boys caught 2 flathead & another tailor. They were happy. Enough for me for my return to the rocks. I tried out my new rod. Storm Gomoku 13ft. Casts very well. I had a Penn SpinfisherV 6000 reel on it. Good combo. Newport Arms for breakfast Lots of laughs. Cheers.

yeah been some tailor and schoolies there occasionally, never tried squiding haha wouldn't mind getting some to eat haha
