Eel is good. So too is stingray, if you didn't know.
@christophagus has done up a thread on targeting them if you're interested -

They are good fun if you're targeting them. Good when a plan comes together.
What bait did it take ?

    Howdy,
I've found this forum many times whilst searching google for tips and suggestions. It asked me join so I could see all your pics, so I thought I should. Might be fun and educational for us all.
I've got no interest in boating, and do quite well from the land anyway - mainly canals, estuaries, boat ramps, pontoons, marinas, and occasionally the beach. Almost always at night, once a week on average.
Only target larger species. I was sick and tired of targeting smaller species and getting bugger all, so I thought why not target only larger species and get bugger all? At least if I only catch one or 2 in a session that it would be more memorable.
Most common species caught are tailor, ray, catfish and pike eel. Usual baits are mullet strips and pilchard. Would love to find a jew but they don't seem to be as keen in the cutbait as the species mentioned above. My next mission is to learn the ways of the cast net.
    Thanks!

    Hi ubnt
Thanks. The catfish you are catching are infected with some sort of parasite or virus. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't hinder eating qualities nor the overall health of the fish. Brisbane River catties are definitely not the best on the chew or healthiest fish out in the river.
The water quality around West End is fine, as far as I'm concerned. When you consider how much the tide runs through there (and all the way up to Goodna and further) you wouldn't think the fish could be to bad.
    Cheers Hamish

    Hi Sunny
Threadfin of all sizes are more active in Summer. In winter, you tend to get more fish of good size.
My favourite time to fish for them is April and Spring. Water is a bit dirty but plenty salty for lots of bait, meaning lots of threadies!
    Cheers Hanish

thanks for your excellent report and I have learnt a lot from reading them, keep it up!
Just a question about the catfish with red dots you caught, are they unhealthy if there is any red spots on the skin? I have seen a few of them caught near Westend and I am trying to make sense of the their appearance and the water quality in the area.  Anyone here an expert on catfish?

The weather was kind to us today although a bit cool until the sun hit the water. The shrimp traps productive but the fish slow. We thought we were onto a good session first up with the firstf ew fish in the high thirties but it slowed drastically. Final tally was 28 bass and one unnamed decky only boating 3 fish. Even the eagles were on holiday.
    Cheers Ray

    2 rod lengths.
    Can't beat the FG imo.

The problem I've found with the knot on the Spool when casting is it will pick up a lower layer and end in a birds nest.
    That gets old real soon.

Some days I don't bother with leader at all, particularly bottom bashing and floating when the bite is on.
Still catch good fish this way.

I use a about a rod and a half length, so the knot is just off the spool when casting so the knot doesn't catch on the lip of the spinning reel spool. I might have to give your method a go as I like the idea of of tension and wear. Do you ever get knots in your main line ?

Here's one that no one can figure yet. Someone did suggest it could be a Gidgee lure, but I don't think it is. @rayke1938, I seem to remember he was a member here many moons ago and that you may have got a few. I did too, but they are not quite the same. What do you reckon ?

I can't make out the writing underneath.

If you can get another photo without a flash and make sure it is in focus I could have another go?

    Get the dog.
An illegal fisher has been convicted in Wyong court yesterday receiving over $8,000 in fines and ordered to pay over $4000 in professional costs.

If you have a whole Pilchard out with trebles you are a good chance for a Tailor or Flathead.
Chop the Pilchard into chunks and a small hook and you should get some bream.
Good luck. Such a beautiful part of the world. Share some pics if you can?
