  1. It is what makes you happy at the end of the day. My reef combos now are around $1600, Shimano Talica reel and a Wilson venom rod. 10 years ago I started with $500 combos, shimano tyrnos reel and live fibre rods. Both catch fish. Some are light then others to use.
  2. Yes. Was pretty good on the chew as well. Similar to jack or nanny
  3. Not sure why he is happy. Bloody things sap all you energy for nothing. Yeah I think he will be making it a priority soon.
  4. There are crocs. These couple of streams are good. I fished a stream up near Port Douglas that a mate told was clear. I was careful and was getting over a log on the bank and nearly stood on a 2.5m croc. We watched it swim off.
  5. Quick report DHess popped up for a week with the kids at Easte. We head down to Mission Beach and up off Port Douglas/Cape Tribulation combined. Some glorious weather, some excellent fishing, some fun snorkelling and many many sharks.
  6. Yeah I have to say Jacob made it hard with it out of the water Didn’t Declan give it to me.
  7. When my boys were up in January we tried our hands at Jungle Perch fishing. To be honest, if we did not catch anything, the walk in the rainforest and wading the cool clear streams was enough in itself. We managed a couple, on most of the trips. No size though. When Declan flew home I did another trip with Jacob and we seemed to have worked it out better, picking up a few small fish on every reach of the stream. So Great you can pop around the corner and experience these things. “Paradise” IMG_2854.MOV IMG_2858.MOV IMG_2978.MOV
  8. Belated report. My boys came up to cairns in January to visit. Weather was not looking that great so we head down to Mission Beach for a few days to find some better conditions. My mission should I accept it, was to “get my sons onto some firsts and improve their PBs”. We fished 2 days and a morning before heading home. Conditions were ok but improved while we were there. First day we were a little lost and spent some time searching for ground and eventually got some location info off photo from a trip from the year before where we could start our search again. Found some awesome ground and some epic fish and of course some bloody sharks. Great trip and well worth the drive and accommodation costs. It really is fishing paradise. Species caught - Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Large Mouthed Nannygai, Red Throat Emperor and other species. IMG_2928.MOV IMG_2893.MOV IMG_2892.MOV
  9. I am about to start targeting them in the shallow reefs and also the deeper marks as i reckon some of the bait we see out deep may be squid
  10. Where are you fishing? What is your Boat? etc.
  11. I can imagine what it was like. They do not fair well when off the water. How was the motor, it cost me 2k to get mine back on the water. Did you paint the famous black and green colours again?
  12. I have often wondered where the location of the Brisbane Bar recording station was, so i looked it up today. It has always seemed to be out when it comes to the South Passage Bar and I now know why. It is Located not that far from Mud island. Not sure how they can call it a Bar though. So if you are looking at the tide times to cross the South Passage Bar, you should lookup the times for the SPB not the brisbane bar. https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Brisbane-Bar-Australia https://tides.willyweather.com.au/qld/brisbane/south-passage.html
  13. good stuff Henry - Do you have the same boat?
  14. Good Stuff Jon, Damo has not been as liberal with the photos this time. Will have to head up with you guys one time.
  15. Hi Brian - Have a look at this video from Victoria - it has some good advise regarding squiding deeper water and surveying an area.
  16. no size, but managed some justover snapper and pearlies pretty successful. The current was against him with the current and his jig weight.
  17. hahahaha for a minute there I thought you had caught one Brian.
  18. haven't you got an offshore boat, what are you playing the nursery for
  19. not sure Brian - we are looking to try targeting them in the deep as well on Paternoster rigs.
  20. Do not worry about me falling over I am definately getting a video of Dom fishing and fighting a fish with his "Slow Jerker"
  21. Funny you say that. You can flow me here. Just fishing and garden
  22. Thanks Hamish. If you have some sea legs or willing to risk being sick . I will get you out some time. Remember we do not come back in if someone gets sick. We also fish very hard. Out before light and back at dusk or later. regards Ted.
  23. @dhess Head out on Friday around the cape. We hit the FAD but BigCat charters was sitting on top of it and we only managed one hit on a slug. Started float lining and also had a paternoster down do see what was around. Managed a lot of pannie Snapper without any size, undersized pearlies and a good Samson which gave a good account for itself and my biggest. We head out deeper and this is where the fun started. We still had the just over snapper which we returned hoping for a couple Of bigger units to round out the bag and it was not long. Firstly I should mention when we arrived at the Mark there was another boat drifting it. Rather than just drop in on them or drive away we slowly motored up to them asked if it was ok to join them and work in with their drifts. All good from them and we started drifting. Dom was first on with a good fish landing a mid 60s snapper. We fished here a bit longer but no quality so moved onto a nearby mark. This is where the day got interesting. I dropped down the paternoster and as soon as it hit the bottom, whack, whack and I fell on my arse still holding onto the rod. It was an unusual fight but very solid. I get it up and see colour and I have a mid 60s snapper and a 70 yellow tail kingfish. That explains a lot. Dom is then onto a massive fish which he man handles at first but the fish quickly man handles Dom and bricks him. Probably a big YTK. Home through the rough bay at dusk and quick trip home and I filleted the Samson and YTK for some sashimi that night. So dam good. Hard to pick a favourite. Well worth the effort of preparing sashimi. My favourite way of eating fish. IMG_1396.MOV
