Got the week off work so if anyone needs a deckie or is keen for a spot of landbased, hit me up. Been ages since I've wet a line.

Hey Shaun, You'd be welcome on my boat, but I'm taking Charlie out Thursday and I'm away before then.
For anyone else, Shaun is good company (and his wife is a cake decorator !!).

There can be good diver whiting in the creek but generally it is pretty lousy as a fishing location. The foreshore however can be great.
Plenty of Bream and Whiting cruse the banks at high tide. A bit of worm will entice a few bites.
A bit further south, the other side of the wading pool, is a great spot for flicking small top water lures for bream and the occasional well travelled flathead. Start about 200 m from the wading pool and walk  south around the courner.
At night at high tide many squid fishers don the headlamps and walk the foreshore and catch a good amount of squid.
Also the rock wall at Manly is very popular and turn up trevally and the Tailor should be starting to turn up.
    Good luck

It only takes one good fish to make a day on the water worth it. Would like to have seen the dropped flattie.

It was great to be out there after a long period of inconvenient weather days. Company was good as always, Steve. Thanks for the day. You've summed it up nicely so I don't have much to add. Well, other than the fact you hogged that side of the boat when my side wasn't firing. Mental notes have been taken. haha
I'll tag on here that I relaunched at 4.30 yesterday afternoon and fished around the Port with @Leosonfire for zero in the esky, a squid that had its head ripped off by something that didn't come back for the main course. :(   In the end we ended up wrestling a good sized catshark and two big rays to the boat before the midnight curfew and a 22 hour day called time.
That was a good fight you had with the morwong and very well angled !

The forecast for mid-week was too good to miss, so @ellicat and I made a plan to hit spot R1a on the eastern Bay to chase macs and squid. We launched from Manly at dawn into a bit of westerly chop which was not too uncomfortable. The sunrise was beautiful as usual. Here is photo for those who never see a sunrise ( @GregOug, I am talking about you).

We got to spot R1a and Brian deployed a pilchard under a float. I decided to fish the bottom with local squid chunks while I waited to see if there was any mackerel action. Brian soon followed suite. Pretty soon we were pickerel severely and the only fish coming over the side were stripies and undersize snaps and grassies. The float line was not getting any love either. I called a fellow AFOer who I knew was close by chasing squid to see if he was having more luck, but alas he was quiet as well.
The conditions just got better and better as the day went on, but unfortunately the fishing was still quiet. Brian called @GregOug who was out and about surprisingly early. He reported that things were quiet as well. We had a couple of moves and did a bit of drifting before settling in at spot R1b for the run out tide. The nursery was still active but I did manage one grassy in the mid thirties. Soon after, there was our favourite sound of zzzzzzzzz coming from my reel. After a very brief fight the line went tight but no movement.  Was it a ray, or a big cod headed for home? I left the line with tension on for about ten minutes hoping to annoy the fish out of hiding, but no joy. So I gave it heaps of slack, again no joy. I tightened the drag and broke the line. Looked like the braid was cut on something sharp so the fish must have headed for a bit of reef.
A bit later after landing a smaller legal grassie and a legal tuskie, the old zzzzzzz happened again. This time there was no heading for the reef and we settled into a good battle that went for several minutes. When I first saw the fish on its side down deep, I thought it was a big snapper, but when I got it closer We could see it was a big fat morwong. By this stage I was wondering how good that hastily tied FG knot would hold, but in no time Brian had slipped the net under it and 75cm of morwong hit the deck. I weighed it on my boga grips this morning and it was just over 12lbs in the old lingo. My best fish so far this year so I was pretty happy.

So while we didn’t manage either of our target species, it was another great day on the water with good company, a few laughs and a few fish. Thanks again Brian.

Great write up mate. Don't think I've ever seen so much dedication to getting a fish up and swimming again. Top commitment from your dad to jump in that water too, I certainly wouldn't do it after catching a few of those demon eel pike! Great stuff.

    Thanks mate, I appreciate it.
I had a mate I used to go out with regularly but he prefers to do his fishing on Tinder these days, so he doesn't get out much (and still doesn't catch much either I might add... ha!)

@shaun1800 and I headed out at gentleman's hours from a very busy Port of Brisbane ramp this morning. Conditions were great and better than forecast. We arrived at spot x and deployed our lines, with Shaun opening the account with an unders squire. This was the theme for the day with grassies, squire, bream, tuskies and a fantail leatherjacket.
In amongst them were two decent hookups and one capture. Shaun, who was playing on 4lb line, locked horns with what we thought was going to be a snapper or mack. He played it like a champ and patiently brought it to the boat after some very good runs. I slipped the net under what turned out to be one of those clean silvery bay catfish. Disappointed, Shaun declined the offer of a photo, feeling a little deflated after the promising start.
About 15 minutes prior to this my 15lb setup got absolutely smashed. It reefed me before I could tighten the drag right up. I'm suspecting it was a good snap and was disappointed to wind in a roughed up leader.
So, tonight I'm heading back for the high tide to have another go with heavier gear. Who knows, I might be able to get my hook back.

It was 4lb braid with 8lb mono leader, but  yeah when it first took off I thought I was no chance of getting it up, particularly after Ellie got reefed. But gradually I began to make ground on it...all the while imagining a big snapper coming to the surface and the stories I'd tell my grand kids about how I pulled this monster from the depths on 4lb....
So yes, needless to say when I realised it was a catty I was a tad deflated. That said it gave me a very enjoyable fight and I was happy to get him up.

    Hey Brian
Shame about the lack of fish over those two sessions, but like you always tell me in the BR sessions that are bad your persistence will surely pay off! I reckon it's a pity that you didn't get rewarded on a good snapper.
Good job to Shaun for playing a catty on 4lb - that would sure be some fun. Bummer about the flatty realisation - it will be out there next time.
Two questions though, have you been keeping record of the time, and was Spot X the spot where Kat, Steve, you, and me all went out to?
    Cheers Hamish 🙂

Forgot to mention that Shaun got a 44cm flatty that we released as I had a seniors moment and said legal was 45cm.
