  1. Running a tally for 2024

    Fishing: 1

    Surfing: 0

Got a couple of fish in the shallows on the weekend with my bro. Nothing to write home about but good to get out nonetheless - last trip was early november. All on light gear and plastics. Aiming for a surf soon but not sure when with this whirlygig spinning around up north!

  2. Wow Ted I’m glad I clicked on the links to your Facebook photos! Some really great fish there - lots of firsts and lots of variety! Love the jobbies and cattle dog cods

I once had a filleter in a fish shop tell me her fave fish to eat were Robinsons sea bream can you report on its eating quality?

your boat looks like a fishing weapon and I’d hate to see your catches when you actually “figure it out”!

  3. im in the market for similar and ive seen a few for sale on this side of the country. i think the hulls are imported by Haines and fitted out here rather than made here (but i could be wrong). i did a bit of googling and the SCB (not sure whether they are affiliated or not but similar production method for their hulls) in the US have had lots of trouble with their hulls cracking - so not sure that the technology will withstand Australian conditions.

Id hate to drop coin on a fibreglass boat and have to nurse it like a pressed tinny!

Never ridden in one but so cannot give a definitive review - id be interested to hear from anyone that has owned/ ridden in one!

  4. rule of thumb for rod ratings is that optimum fishing is in the middle of the range. i.e. if you have a 2-4kg set up fish 3kg line (8lb) but it will fish 2kg and 4kg if you need it to. i prefer to choose my lighter rods/ blanks on the lure weight it is designed for. heavy rods i will go the middle of the line rating

setting your drag at ~1/3rd of the breaking strain is a hangover from IGFA game fishing days where they were fishing tested mono lines. this allowed them to up the drag to 1/2 or even 3/4 of the breaking strain of the line if they needed to. you should set your drag at whatever seems right for the fish you are chasing - light if its bream so you dont pull the hooks, heavy for fish like jacks you will be pulling out of the structure. most people i fish with dont measure their drags using scales but set it and adjust depending upon the species they are chasing. remember your reels are designed to give fish drag if they run so you dont snap the line. if you set the drag in the correct range you shouldnt need to adjust mid fight. if you do need to adjust go easy until you are gaining ground on the fish. and remember to back it off before you cast again!

  5. put a wanted ad on FB marketplace

or, if you are happy with a substitute, Pflueger is owned by Pure Fishing who also own Penn, Berkley and Abu Garcia. So you could look for a rod with similar specs from these companies. Abu Garcia Rayrex has a SP702 for around $100.

I rate the Abu Garcia salty stage line of rods for feel and components; likely made in the same factory as the previous generations of Pflueger....(Chyna)

My guess is those were build on IM6 (intermediate modulus) blanks which are widely available; any decent custom rod builder could access a similar blank and components (cork grips? fuji alconite guides?) and build you a reasonable replica, even better if you drop the old rod off to him/her to plan the build off
