Great report mate thanks for the read.

I'm glad there are still some Schoolies around. Sorry you missed out on the Whiting.

Cracking shovel nosed ray especially on light gear. Well done.

Could be a case of don't believe everything you see on Facebook. One of my mates swears that nothing on FB should be believed. He reckons fishos are the worse with fake news. 🙂

Well done on the feed. Those little bonito are quite feisty for their size.

Mystery fish are always fun, hey. Did you cut him off or were you able to get your hook back ?

The shovel nose wasn't playing the game. We couldn't get it to stay next to the boat long enough to de-hook so had to cut as close to the hooks as possible.

Funny incident when I cut the line the rod was loaded up so it flicked back into my partner face but she was saved by her cap brim (bearing the brunt). Close called  that we could laugh about but will have to be more careful next time.

Just learning things and  tid bits to watch out for every time we hit the water.

  3. Yes trying to decide between the yamashita and the stainless steel ones.

The plan is to paravane to find where they are likely located as articles like the one @Old Scaley posted say this is the most effective technique for schoolies.

I've only really tried under a float when we have fished gold coast reefs for spanish, but interesting that you say you have had more success under a float compared to paravanes.

Must be all the fishing reports that I read by Spero http://wp.fishingmonthly.com.au/2019/09/27/moreton-bay/

He seems to always be on the schoolies and swears by paravaning.

  4. Hi All,

Done a search on the forum around the different types of paravanes and trolling boards. Couple of questions for those with experience:

    1) Which type / design / Brand? : Makka, Hookem, Yamashita, Delta, @aussie123 sells some. Interested in which type is the most forgiving (for my poor boat handling) eg tight turns, staying at depth, false hookups. Some are metal, plastic (surfboard shape / triangle)

    2) Which size for Moreton Bay - Targeting schoolies. Some of the sizing doesn't tell you what depth they typically get down to and or what trolling speed is required to get to correct depth?

    Cheers

Just saw that on Facebook Marketplace someone is selling Anthony Milford - for Free !

    Some people are witty.

I think we are stuck with him for another season as he has already taken up his 2021 option. Joey Johns saying it would be better value to bench him rather then play him.

  6. Good Read Hamish, I know the feeling sometimes it is catfish after catfish out of the river.

What i used to do was have your lighter rig setup (prone to catfish) but a chance of catching anything and then as the backup I would have a freshwater eel shark rig soaking out the back at all times.

Even if there are catfish around having this rig out the back always gave hope to catching something sizeable and fun during the session.

  7. @GregOug Inside the Bay i pretty much just ignore wave height because it is largely protected by the islands or you will be able to find a protected spot  behind a smaller bay island (Otherwise i'd never be able to get out since i'm limited to Sat/Sun)

Mainly just look at wind,  tides (for tide directions) to work out how much potential chop there will be on my run out in the morning and run back in. I'll plan the start and end of my sessions around wind/tide (for when i expect the least amount of chop).

As @ellicat mentioned outside top of Cape you would have to factor in wave height and wave periods or for me risk starting an infinite burley trail

  8. Ok you have tested it with two cars and have the same issue.

This means the issue is somewhere between the trailer plug and the light bulb.

Now to troubleshoot. To determine if there is a grounding issue or short you need to test for continuity. For this you will need a multimeter.

@rayke1938 is on the money. The test if you have done it before is straight forward but probably easier to explain in person

The other question i have is if your headlights are off, when you turn your turn indicator on do the trailer brake lights also flash on? (This would indicate a short between these two wires)
