  1. They already have seasonal reef fish closures on the GBR. Plus 33% green zones with no fishing at any time. Stocks of reef fish are described as very robust and appear to be increasing in numbers.
  2. The aim is to reduce the catch by 50%. The rec catch is only 9% of the total - so there must be a substantial reduction in the commercial catch to reach that target.
  3. Remember the bag limit has been halved as well.
  4. No saltwater fish has ever been fished to extinction. Also we have the 30 rec havens in our favour.
  5. So how did you go? Also by the way that video just the replacement of the outer ram seals. There is much more involved in replacing all the seals and O rings. Also the seals might not be the problem and replacement is not always successful.
  6. I have a NOCO GB40 Genius Boost +. It holds it's charge for quite a few months. It saved a fishing trip not long after I got it. A hard to start motor on a cold morning quickly drained my boat's batteries. Batteries can lose 50% of their charge in low temperatures.
  7. A lithium ion jump starter is a good alternative these days.
  8. Tariffs were progressively removed from the time Whitlam made the first significant cut - for better or worse.
  9. Look way overpriced. I'm pretty sure you could get new International's, Okuma Makarias or Tiagra's for similar money.
  10. I would take the prop off, check for fishing line and re-grease. If the bearings look OK I would just repack them. The hydraulic steering probably won't need bleeding unless there are signs of problems such as air in the system. Someone put up a link in another thread how to service them. This mainly involves cleaning and re-greasing the support rod on the top. I would check the build date of your tyres and replace them if it is older than 5 years, especially if it is a single axle trailer near the weight limit. PS: is there something wrong with the trim and tilt for you want to be replacing the seals?
  11. Well, cracks can compromise the boats flotation given that most alloy boats rely on sealed compartments rather than positive flotation. Also a lot of fiberglass boats today use composites rather than wood.
  12. Handy if you want to let the fish run a bit before setting the hook and you don't want to hold the rod. So good for estuary flathead drifting, live baiting etc. I picked one up at last Sunday's markets by the way for $60.

    Trailer

I got my Sales trailer in 1999 for my 5.4m boat and it's still going strong. I did replace the axles, springs and discs once. It is one of the cheaper brands. I'd guess it would be a bit over 3K for an equivalent one now.

    Trailer

He has a 5m boat so that one is way too big. A bit over 3K is what some of the the moderately priced one seem to go for new. I don't know how he arrived at 8-10K.

    Trailer

You can move the winch post forward if there is room. A bit of overhang is OK but not that much. 8 to 10 K seems high for a 5M trailer (that's about what my whole rig is worth which is a 5.4M boat). If you are in Sydney have a look at Sales Trailers which are reasonably priced.
  16. Very few fish have seasonal closures in NSW. Bass and estuary perch are the only ones I can think of. As to green zones or marine parks they have never been the result of stock assessments like this. They have never even originated from any of our fisheries departments. Ie it doesn't seem that this assessment has anything to do with some green agenda or push for marine parks.
  17. Al the evidence points to a natural origin for Covid (jumping from another species). Also the income per person in China is many times below that of the US: "Due to vast population of China, more than 4 times of US's population, difference between these two country is very high in terms of per capita income. Per capita income of United States is 6.38 and 3.32 times greater than of China in nominal and PPP terms, respectively. US is the 8th richest country of the world whereas China comes at 72th rank. On PPP basis, United states is at 12th position and China is at 75th".
  18. I have never heard of there being 'massive oil reserves' in the South China Sea. And we have the right to speak up on matter of international laws and norms. An international tribunal ruled that China didn't have a claim over the islands there and China responded by militarising them. China is punishing our trade because they were trying to Finlandise us. Instead we made moves to shore up our sovereignty against their cyber attacks, bribery and influence operation. If you think there is any doubt about this then just look at the list of 14 demands they issued.
  19. I would be. Especially in winter when the yellowfin are on. Westerly winds can blow up without warning and you will have to head straight in to them to get back. There is little lee effect from the land once you get out wide. I wouldn't even go to the Peak in that boat in winter time.
  20. I have never been checked by the Water Police but have been by Maritime NSW. About half the encounters have been unpleasant. One tried to tell me my lifejacket was borderline for getting a fine. It had never been used, or sat on - just a bit dirty from being stowed away. On another occasion I was told off for passing within 10m of another boat at speed and that hitting a wave could have resulted in a collision. In fact I was at least 60m away and not going particularly fast. He was totally adamant about it. I thought every schoolboy in the country knew that 2 objects viewed from a distance appear closer than they really are.
  21. The drag is not well protected from water. They did come out with a waterproof series with a blue side plate. People used to resort to putting shower caps over them when trolling. As others have said it's not up to the standards of todays reels.
  22. I have done well with the Atomic Prong 4'' size. It's the most successful in terms of variety of species caught, eg flathead, jewfish, trevally, mangrove jack, salmon, kingfish.
  23. It shouldn't cause any problems (running out of fuel) if it's a premix motor with carbies. Just make sure it's fully primed again and as others have suggested check the condition (and maybe swap for new) the fuel bulb, lines, connectors.
