The fisheries are requesting feedback from fishos in QLD regarding a few proposed changes.  Banning opera house pots, changing crab pot requirements, splitting the combined in possession limits of crimson and saddletail snapper (small and large mouth Nannaygai), and management around black jewfish.

Not many factors effect me apart from the changes Nannygai. I originally did the survey and was a bit harsh because they did not include the proposed size change in the survey. Ready online I was not the only one unable to work it out.  It has since been pointed out to me that it was available here but they forget we are not all public servants and not familiar with their structure and nomenclature. For me if they where not going to include details in the survey the document should have come before the survey button and a lot more obvious
That said I can understand the need to change the management of Saddletail Snapper  I personally do not take crimson snapper as I think they are an inferior eating species.

one problem with Nannygai and  Lutjanidae fish is they suffer from extreme baratrauma .  Studies on fingermark by the NT fisheries found that there was a very poor survival rate of fingermark caught deeper then 5m deep.  This means when fishing in the deep water, like plus 50m, fish released would not survive  That said when fishing these areas I catch very few under 55cm
The other issue is the Taxman’s possession limits, and these losses of fish are often more significant then what is harvested
    anyway have your say

@Old Scaley Thanks Mate. I was on another forum for 11 years. Mainly NSW people. The fun police arrived & everything changed, plus they sold out to some else who wasn't interesred in Fishing. They have lost a lot of members. Pin a badge on somebody with no experience & you have kaos.
This is a great forum with NO BS.
    Cheers.

Nothing truer than "Matching the hatch" when it comes to slug selection.
    However my default is:
Start small: If I know the mac or tuna are around (a bust up) I'm going with a weight that allows me to cast / reach the bust up before they spook and head underwater.
There is no point going smaller if the metal slug is not heavy enough to reach the fish. On the flipside I don't go larger because I'm a lazy fisherman and larger slugs take more effort 🙂
Upsize: If I find that i'm landing the slug in the strike zone but no hits, I'll change it up and try some different sizes/colours.
Match the hatch: Once you have landed a feeding mac/tuna - They quite often regurgitate what they are eating onto the boat. Then I match my slug with that bait size. This is by far your best bet at landing another fish. Matching the hatch is a game changer.
On days where the water clarity is good and bait is hanging around bust ups, just look over the side with the polarised glasses and scope out what size bait is swimming around and match that.
Other lures: I would also have some other non-metal lure options as well. Stickbaits or plastics (bubblegum colour being my fav) if you are chasing Tuna. For macs i tend to stick to metals as a solid option

Not to sure on the length but i find the halco twisty in the 30g with a snap swivel on the split ring to work great for macs, the snap swivel just adds an extra bit of protection from the teeth.  As for tuna assuming your fishing for longtails you might need a broad range of metals and stick baits, sometimes they are just not eating what you throw at them.

If you are into Youtue have a look at Part 1 of the boat build on Greg’s Wicked Fishing (he is a bayside boy).  He bought a 5m plate boat and had RipTide fabricate a new casting deck and other mods.  Might give you some ideas at least as its a very different boat.
And get into it.  If you can fabricate and weld this will be a walk in the park.

So I've recently bought an electric motor and starting enquiring about the plate being fabricated to the bow.. I'm keen to add some flat gunnell to the sides of the boat and extend the casting deck to fit a livewell/ more storage...
    so I got to thinking...😬🤪
Being my first boat and also being an apprentice, why not have a crack myself?
I have never welded aluminium but weld stainless and carbon pipe regularly, have access to an AC/DC tig and can get enough materials to do all the jobs for a similar price it would cost to do just the bow mount...
I think I'm going to use this topic to document and record the progress, happy to hear any advice from people that fabricate or have any constructive recommendations to the build...
To start, I'll give a bit of history on the boat.. I sold my Hobie PA14 when this boat came up. Pretty much a clean swap. It's a Horizon 2000ish 4.2m with a 30hp 2001 Honda 30hp on the back. Trailer was only 12 months old but I believe had been mistreated (along with the boat and motor, they lived on stradbroke)
the motor wasn't running so started with new fuel , fuel lines, filters, got it started but wouldn't get on the plane...
    Carbies next...
Bought a carby gasket set, thermostat, impeller service kit, new plugs and got stuck in. Pulled down the carburettors and took them to the local small motor mechanic to be ultrasonic cleaned, reassembled
still wouldn't get on the plane..
Stripped down the carbies again, somehow there was gunk in the bowl so ultrasonic cleaned again then cleaned the jets by hand with oxy tip cleaners...
My first time on the plane, beautiful! Cruises around 20kts in good conditions, to date have not assessed l/km but it really isnt concerning. Have taken it for over 40km round trips up north. Just take some extra fuel ⛽️
the tilt mechanism was damaged and the tiller arm didnt move vertically at all, sorted those out with replacement parts. Was very hard to steer for the first couple months until I found a bolt that restricted movement in the steering, loosened that and greased the nipples. 😄
In a perfect world, I would have a newer motor and a newer tinny but this is what I have to work with. She's not perfect or pretty but she's honest.
I'll post photos and updates when things happen. if you got this far into the write up I commend you.
Hope I have this in the write sub category..
Also, in the meantime, I'm going to keep fishing, I'm keen to catch more fish on lures, if anyone is keen to come for a burn on the water and show me some things, let me know. (Really just want your GPS marks) 🤣

I am currently using DUEL 0.57mm for my heavy set up and seaguar ACE 0.47mm for my medium set up, and I love them both, but im always open to trying other brands if they are proven better.

Tuna are fish reacted to FluxJess in moving to aus - gear check
    Hey all,
I am moving over to Aus in a few months from NZ. My current setup was targeted to Trout so I am running an Abu Garcia Veritas 5pc Travel Rod 2-5kg  5-17g and for fly fishing I have an Orvis Encounter 9' 6wt.
We will be spending a few months in Karumba (so boat fishing using other rods) but then we will be taking some time to travel across the top of Aus then down the West Coast before settling in Perth.
Just wanting to know if this setup will be ideal in Perth for freshwater species or if i need something beefier?
    Cheers,

Tuna are fish reacted to Hweebe in temporary workaround - google photo uploads
    Hi All,
Since there has been no movement on fixing the Photo Upload issue. I've created a Temporary workaround using Google Photos. It's not ideal (and a bit convoluted) but this should be the simplest way to enable public sharing of photos with a group (without everyone having to pay subscription costs). All you need is a google account (free). I figure most people already have a google account.
Please test out and let me know if steps below need updating or if it doesn't work for you.
Below is a link to a Google Photo Album : Australian Fishing Online - Public Shared Album
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/QvdZs2kL9cH3UmFV6
You should be able to access this link from any PC or Phone
    *******************
How to upload from an iPhone
    1) Click the link to the album https://photos.app.goo.gl/QvdZs2kL9cH3UmFV6 (Choose either Web browser or App when prompted)
    2) Top right corner there should be a button to "Add photos" (Button is a frame of 2 mountains with a + sign) - You will be prompted to sign-in to Google (if you haven't already)
    3) This should present a drop down to choose photo from "Photo Library"
    5) Select the photos you want to add. Click "Add" in top right corner to submit.

    Hello again,
second post in a about a week, and its a good one.  went out fishing on friday, the plan was to hit the fads again, and shoot some mahi mahi, troll some skirts and bag out.  but it did not go to plan, woke up at 2:30 and was on the water at 4.  weather was looking good coming out of the passage able to cruise at 50km/h, got around the corner and it changed.  was probably only 1-1.5m swell but it was all chop and in a 4.8 tinny it was rough.  managed to push to moreton and get some cover and tried to jig up some livies at the beacon.  wasnt able to get anything except a large baitfish about 30cm.  started puching it out to the fad but before we got around the point of moreton, saw large schools of the biggest longtail tuna i have ever seen.  cast stickbaits at them for about 30min with no luck, so just started drifting in about 30m of water.  pulled up 3 nice snapper on pillies and the fish bin was looking good.  after the 3rd drift the reel with the live on took off.  had to pull in 4 lines and by the time i was on the rod i was nearly on backing, and had to gain back about 300m of line.  after a long 15-20min fight i got colour.  it was a large longtail.  we gutted and bled it on the boat and towed it backwards for about 15mins after gutting and bleeding it get all of the blood out.  started to leave and head home at about 6:30.  i packed the gut cavity with ice and lay wet towels over it.  on the way home got more ice and a large fish cooler bag to put it in.  weighed and meaured it when i got home, the final length was 128.5cm and over 18kg.  ended up getting more than 12kg of meat off it, probably could have got more out of it but dad and i have never filleted a fish like that, it wont go to waste tho as we will use it for crab bait.

    Hi all,
Heading to Fiji first week of March for a family holiday, staying on Plantation Island.
Can anyone recommend a good charter and/or beach fishing or kayak spot? (I've read elsewhere land based fishing may not be allowed).
Is it worth taking my own gear or just hire there?
Thanks all! I'm not very experienced in salt but usually go alright the rare times I give it a go so will post pics if I get anything.

The first run on them is amazing, it goes from 0 - 100 very quick and you have to be thinking.  shame about not knowing the size of the kingfish, i have caught a size one since i lived in new zealand but they taste great when you do get one.  sounds like a lot of fun

Well done on the Longtail. I also got one on Friday. Spent all morning out around Cape moreton, then on the way home across the bay I saw a school of longies smashing baitfish. First cast on a 40g slug and I was on. Ended up being 19kg, so definately some good size ones around.

Reading the report by @Tuna are fish inspired me to write a report.
Headed out from the Port around 4.30am on Friday, with the plan to chase a spanish on trolled dead baits around cape moreton.
Was pretty choppy on the way out, but conditions improved throughout the morning. Within 10 minutes of getting the baits in the water we had a hit.
In came a 65cm yellowtail king. I had no idea of the size limit for these as I havent caught one before so it was returned.
The next two hours were uneventful, until we came across a school of mack tuna feeding on the surface.
They were on the chew and we spent a while catching them nearly every cast, with the hope of a bigger longtail lurking beneath.
This was not the case, and eventually we got back to trolling. Had one more hit and run without a hookup.
Time to head home, and about halfway across the bay I saw a large splash, with some birds heading for it.
Then I saw a huge longtail break the surface and excitement levels rose.
First cast with a 40g slug and I was on. Longtails certainly do some incredible initial runs.
After a good fight we had the fish on board. Weighed it the next morning and it was 19kg.
Plenty of meat shared around with friends and family so smiles all round.
Sometimes the target fish doesn't work out, but there is always the chance of decent by-catch in the bay.
    Cheers,
    Lachlan
