A few years ago my house got broken into. I told the attending police officers that I was going to have to have a serious conversation with the chooks because they had not deterred the offenders.
The police thought it was hilarious at the time... But the chooks must have overheard because I have not had a problem since...

Arrived just after Sunrise. Hoping to beat the School Holiday rush.
    Tailor first up. Released.
Ended up with one nice Snapper ( Puppy will be happy )
Went quite for a while. Changed to lures & landed two bonito.
About to leave & the reel went off the planet.
On the other end after a fight was a large blue groper, he wasn't happy. Released to fight another day.
Bait was fresh squid & lures.
    Cheers.

Headed offshore at first light on Sat morning with my dad, two of my brothers and one nephew. Crossed the flat South Passage Bar about 5:30am and headed straight to a ledge my brother found last year that has produced pearlies and snapper. On the way I saw a couple of tuna breach just outside the bar, plenty of birds flying around and my brother driving the boat thinks he saw a marlin. Interesting 😎.

Opted against potentially wasting time gathering livies to optimise the early bite - sadly this plan failed as the current was very strong (even with a sea anchor out) and we drew a blank.

The wind was stronger than forecast (constant 15knots from the south east) so instead of going to the Cathedrals area next (were also worried about the current) we opted to check out the Sevens Reef (pretty sure we haven’t fished it before).

Quite a few other boats had the same idea so we did some short drifts and were impressed by the amount of structure- definitely worth some more exploration. I changed from my 50lb braid floatlining rig to a @tugger special 25lb mono floatlining rig with a strip of mullet and two hooks. Got busy/distracted (eating from memory) and all of a sudden my reel is screaming. The fish did two screaming runs before I got to it and I was concerned the 25lb line wouldn’t be up to the task. Luckily it was and soon enough up popped a large fish that at first I thought was a snapper before we realised it was a 71cm spangled emperor (pretty sure it’s a first for me).
We didmy get any more runs so decided to head back inside the bay to try for some mackerel but on the way to the bar we found some tuna so had fun with them for an hour or so with huge schools popping up everywhere and nowhere near as flighty as they are inside the bay. We caught about ten tuna, with at a guess 6 skipjacks and 4 Mack tuna (my vagueness is due to rushing home to get ready for the Broncos game - @ellicat, great game …. 🤣). Saw a few large splashes that indicated some larger predators were in the area (no surprise there) and I also caught a large long tom that engulfed my metal slug as soon as it landed - angry little bugger ….  We put my nephew into quite a few and he fought them well mostly and also got lucky with two being tail-wrapped which made for an easy fight.

Good day on the water (and start to school holidays for me and the kids 😎) and plenty of fillets. We had some of the skipjacks as sashimi which was ok - we didn’t have wasabi which would be a nice addition. Had the spanglie just fried in a pan and taste was nice. Quite a meaty fish (tougher texture probably partly due to size) but I certainly wouldn’t throw them back. Dad is going to smoke the back tunas and I will do some of the skipjacks in or with a stir fry.

Almost forgot to add that the bar was as flat as on the way back in so we circled around the Rufus King wreck to check it out. Also came across two tuna schools in the Rous Channel but couldn’t tempt them.
    Thanks for reading 👍😎.

I did  a heap of snorkeling/spearfishing/scuba diving  when I was a teenager, now that I am much older and life has caught up to me,  I now only rarely go snorkeling unfortunately. But I do know what you mean, we used to swim around and see heaps of fish and the fishermen were all on the piers with their lines in the water and the fish would just ignore all the baits. So we just got a feed with our spear guns and also collected all their snagged jigs from the bottom.

    Hi all,
I'm on school holidays now, so I've finally be able to do a bit of fishing. This report will be about my sessions on Saturday and Sunday. I was going to go today as well but I need to pack for a trip to Yeppoon so decided ( it was decided for me 😕) that I would stay home today.
The first session I woke up decently early and got the train and ferry to the spot. Annoyingly, as I got off the ferry, one of the wheels on my cart busted off, which meant I had to carry it about 800 metres to the spot. I then got to cast netting, but after no luck except one lone herring in my new net I met with Michael. He showed me a few more spots to throw the net, and here we got some mullet and other baitfish - enough to start fishing. It was very quiet at first, but after an hour or so of fishing Michael had a big run on his rod. He set the hook and was onto a decent fish with plenty of headshakes and a couple littles runs. We were pleased to see a solid GT come up, so I netted it and pulled it up. This spot has a lot of structure so it makes sense a trevally was hanging out there. It was about 45cm, and he decided to keep it for lunch.

    Michael's trev
After that, we were hopeful for some more bites, but apart from a few small nibbles it was really quiet. As the tide continued to run out, we threw our nets around for some more mullet and herring. Unfortunately, both of our aerators weren't working, so some of our livies became dead bait pretty quickly. It was pretty cloudy that day, so it wasn't too hot sitting and waiting for the bites. After another two hours or so of hardly getting a touch, we cooked some lunch up. The trevally was very nice, a bit like a tailor, so it was a good decision to keep that for a meal. Since my cart had also broken, we tried to melt the plastic around the wheel plus some cable ties to seal it back together. Annoyingly, this didn't really work, and after a test with the cast net inside it broke. We continued to fish around midday and into the arvo, but the fish weren't biting. We eventually had a few nibbles on whiting and herring with one small run on my rod, but no more fish were hooked for the day - we decided to go fishing the next day before leaving.
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 7:00AM High, 1:50PM, .6M, Low
Moon Phase: About 80%, increasing, a fair bit of run
Bait Caught and Used: Live Mullet, herring, bony bream, silver biddies, winter whiting
Fish Caught: One trevally for Michael, none for me
Tackle and Gear Used: I used one rod, a Shimano Aero 6000 Baitrunner with 30 pound J-Braid on a Kmart rod. The rig was about a rods length of leader to a size 4 star sinker, swivel, about 70cm of trace, then a 6/o Owner circle hook.
    Air Pressure: 1006
    Humidity: 67%
Overall Success Rate: 30% - cool to see a trevally
The next session wasn't any more productive, and was at a different spot the following morning. I met up with Charlie and we drove there, and got our lines in at about 6:30AM. I started cast netting, and bait was tough to come by - it took about 30 throws before I even got a couple of herring. I threw these out anyways, but apart from some pickers there were no decent fish around. Eventually, Michael got a big Christmas tree, which would last us the whole day fishing. Following this, Charlie had a few bites on his rod before hooking up to a fish. After a few decent headshakes, he had a bream on the jetty of about 29CM. He chucked this back, and got another herring out in hope of another fish. It wasn't long before Michael was on too, and he pulled out a slightly larger 31CM or so bream. He kept this, and we got back to fishing. There were definitely lots of bream about, and the pickers were quite bad. We ran out of our live herring pretty quick, so resorted to using the ones that had died as we were struggling to catch any more at all.
The bite stayed quiet, and it seemed there were no decent fish swimming about. I managed to get a couple more live herring which I chucked out, but they each lasted about 45 minutes before dying/getting pickered, which isn't really a good sign.  I had to head off at about 12:30PM to do something in the arvo, so after having some lunch, and getting no more good bites except a couple of lone runs or picks, we decided to call it a day and head home. I was using a small duffel bag on wheels as my cart and it worked well enough, but next time a normal one would be better.
Here's the stats of the trip. I wish I went fishing today but hopefully they're chewing in the river when I'm back from Yeppoon.
    Tide: 7:40AM, 2.3M, High, 2:20PM, .7M, Low
Moon Phase: 87%, increasing. Once again, a fair bit of run (not heaps though).
Bait Caught and Used: Herring, a few deadbaits from the prior session
Fish Caught: Two bream and a catfish for the others
Tackle and Gear Used: I used my Shimano Aero 6000 on a Kmart Rod with 30 pound jbraid and 30 pound leader, Charlie used my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur on an Ugly Stik with 20 pound braid and 30 pound leader. We both used size 4 star sinkers, swivels, and 6/o circle hooks.
    Humidity: 70%
    Air Pressure: 1007
Overall Success Rate: 20% - two sessions and two donuts for me
Anyways, thanks for reading, hopefully I'll catch something next time or at Yeppoon!
    Cheers Hamish

Deepwater Bend can fish decently almost all year round IF you fish it effectively.
Put a berley mix bomb in the water about 4 metres up current from you and out about 1m from the edge.
About 20 minutes later start fishing up current from you about 1 to 1.5m from the bank with unweighted flesh baits about the size of a 10c coin, removing the slack line as the current brings your bait towards you. The moment the current starts pulling on your line you will need to recast....the fish will not smack a cube that is not drifting normally...the pickers start then.
Bream will be ranging from small to quite big, well over the kilo mark. I have caught a few large jacks there over the years fishing this way as well...
September if I fish there i will swap out cubes for whole whitebait that have just finished the run in the river.
Casts more than 3m from the bank will leave you frustrated with untouched bait or stingrays.
It fishes fairly well for luderick along the bank there too....you do need to berley them to concentrate them though.
Shorncliffe pier fishes quite well for whiting on the flats before the house in the middle, otherwise completely unweighted baits dropped beside the pilons is the go.

As some of you may know i am mainly a land based fisho. except for an old SIB that isn’t really that fishable. My dad and I recently acquired a 4.3m brooker tinny it needs some paint and some new flooring but structurally it’s sound. It’s a fairly flat hull, so it’s stable but is only stable inshore. It came with an old Johnson trolling motor and a Lowrance hook reveal which we already have on the SIB. It should be a fishing weapon when we get a side scan transducer from whitworths - hopefully today. We have already taken it out to the port to try get a threadie on vibes with no success, but the boat performed well. I hope you enjoy the pictures
    Cheers Thorbjörn.

    Hi guys,
The fish must have known its fools day as I managed to fool a few this morning.
Launched at Diamond Head at 5.30 and fished the Aldershots. Slow to start and a few small grunter,GT and jew once the tide started out. Hooked a steam train on 6lb of course and chased it for bit before being busted off. I thought Tarpon it was that quick across the surface but no jumps so not sure.
Got the heavier outfit with same lure and hooked up again to something big but pulled hooks after a long run.
Mate came with me and he got his first jew, grunter and GT on lures. He was rapt.
I good flatty to finish the day and back by 9.30. All round a fun little session.

I took my brother for a mackerel fish this morning , turned up at the ramp a little late due to road work delays on the Bruce Highway , basically all the way from the Pine River to the Caloundra turn off . Got to my first spot to see another boat get a Spanish , we trolled around for about 20minutes without seeing to many exciting things on the sounder , so decided to move on . We then came across a big school of long tails so I popped a stick bait into them twice and hooked up , took me a good 10minutes to get it up to the boat only to see it get swallowed whole next to the boat - very easy release and bye bye stick bait. Moved on again and found a big school of Spanish .  My brother took the first strike . It got sharked , we then had a double hook up , both got sharked . We then moved again . At this stage my brother decided to stop fishing and just drive the boat . I then managed to get a Spanish onto the deck . Lost 5 more to sharks , and a few more to broken wire,  broken hooks simply by going too hard on them. Then surprisingly got another one on the deck and mission was complete with a good feed.
We had two very dramatic shark attacks today , pity I didn’t get them on video . First one was a Spano completing a big cart wheeling  jump , followed seconds later by a  high spiral leap , only to hit the water and get absolutely destroyed on the surface. The second one went for a bit of a run turned around and charged the boat , it then jumped about 10 feet from the back of the boat and slammed into the stern next to the motor, very close to where I was perched , as soon as he hit the water next to the motor he got smashed , a couple more inches higher and he would have been on the deck . We then decided we’d had enough and went home defeated and tails between our legs . What a smashing day!

@Kilkenny, don’t be offended or disappointed by the lack of replies to your offer. I think most people on here are open to fishing with others from the site but would generally like some idea about who their potential fishing buddy is. So they might be looking at previous contributions on the site, or whether they have introduced themselves yet. Just to get a feel about whether the offerer is likely to be good company or a serial killer.  Maybe put up a few posts about fishing trips or general fishing related stuff to break the ice. We are a friendly group, just a little shy.
Another option might be to join a fishing club in the area that you want to fish. There are fewer around these days, but you are sure to find a fishing buddy somewhere amongst them. Good luck!

Another point, it's also something I like to do with people I get to know while fishing, rather then require someone to watch a YouTube tutorial on skip casting, try asking if someone would like to learn skip casting.
Being willing to take the time to teach someone a new skill tends to pay off as you enviably learn a few new things on the way.

it is near impossible to find a spot near brisbane/gold coast that no-one else fishes.
    Suggestions for success:
    - Fresh or live bait is always best.  In estuaries this could be yabbies, worms, small live fish, soldier crabs etc.  For beach/surf locations live beach worms or pippies are great.
    - try and fish during non-peak times if you can, weekends will always be busier
    - fish as light as you dare, personally I believe anything more than 10lb in the estuaries and surf to be overkill.

as far as locations go - without you giving us a lot of info as to what areas you like to fish and what fish you like to catch it is hard to recommend an area.  there's heaps of spots that will produce well around paradise point, the canals at the back of surfers and along the broadwater, if you put in the time to crack the code re tides, baits, rigs, time of day etc.
