What can I say that hasn't already been said?
You can't go wrong with top end quality gear.
Back in 81 or 82 I bought an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Thumb Bar release, which I added a ratchet to, and a Abu Cardinal 52. Both were Made in Sweden models.
I've caught lots of fish with them over the years and they're still going strong 40 years later.

I had a few of those Abu reels made in Sweden. My favourite was the Cardinal 57 with rear drag. Smooth as silk and lasted well over 30 years without a service. In the end the spindle for the winding handle wore out. I still have the Ambassadeur 7000 and it is like brand new after 40 odd years but doesn’t get a lot of use these days. I would still like a Stella.

  2. I have absolutely no scientific basis for this theory, so take it with a grain of salt. If fish stocks generally are in decline, it would make sense that the apex predators would decline as nature does tend to balance these things. So, if there are less sharks but more fish being lost to anglers, is it likely that sharks have been conditioned to associate boats with easy food and are following fishers around waiting for the opportunity?  I remember watching a video a long time ago from South Africa where they caught a bull shark that was hanging around the boat, tagged it and released it. Every time they fished the same area the shark would turn up  and the same shark followed the boat from spot to spot. If that theory is right, no amount of shark culling will fix the issue.

I havent had a problem with any of the Stella's, I have with cheaper shimano's but the flagship range has been flawless IME.

All the fish parks I go to run Stella's for their lure rods and bait runners for their bait rods and they definitely take a pounding.

Time will tell how these hold up to some big arapima but I should find out by the end of the year fingers crossed.

@Bob9863, if you ever decide to switch brands, I can help you dispose of all those Stellas...............

Well, another question Steve, who'd want to live in a world such

as we have created. I'm pretty disapointed in the way we've " progressed "

Geez @Angry51. Sounds like someone needs a hug. The world is still a pretty good place. Now if we could only stop the war in Ukraine, get the US and China to kiss and make up, get inflation down, house the homeless, end poverty, slow climate change, ban “reality” TV, stop celebrity worship and cure cancer! How good would it be then?

I dont mean a reduction, I mean birth control.

Look at Africa, they've been crying about starving kids since I was a boy,

surely they need to not breed so many, you still have equal old/young just not so many.

I don't mean knocking the oldies on the head, when they die off we just have a few less

coming on. Or if we keep breeding at this rate what do we do for food when the world

    population is 200/300 billion.

The good news for you @Angry51 is that we won’t keep breeding at this rate. Just to maintain a population every female of child bearing age needs to produce 2.1 children. None of the developed countries achieve anywhere near that and the big population countries of the world like China, India and Indonesia are also below that target. I read recently that the population of China declined for the first time ever last year, losing 300,000 people. Predictions are that the Chinese population will drop to about 600,000 by the end of the century.

You are right about Africa, with most of the poorer countries still well above the 2.1 fertility rate, but in all likelihood they will follow the world trend and we might have a different problem- will the species survive? Anyway, you and I certainly won’t be around to see that question answered.
