I'm too lazy to drive out to False cape so really got no idea. There's bullys early morning at the top of the Barron too (as usual) - sunday morning at Kamerunga, as soon as I got fish feeding in the burley trail the bullys were coming in and smashing them up.

Kings point is awesome for black jew and fingermark; I haven't fished there in years though. Best way is to night fish, with an underwater light to get squid - live bait the squid. The big catfish and sharks are bad there though, especially if using dead baits I guess one good thing is you'd get out of the SE winds fishing on the southern side of the inlet; too windy this side of the inlet although have been a few bream in the Barron; all around 35cm

Nope, was at HMAS Cairns on the other side of the inlet (the whole system is Trinity Inlet - not just that little bit). Used to be able to fish there if you were a serving ADF member, but closed to fishing now as are pretty much all the wharves in Trinity Inlet. Awesome fishing now only if you have a boat.

Only way to do it is fish creek mouths and let the float catch a ride out on the ebb tide - I've done this at the mouth of Barr creek sometimes and either get bitten off or spooled by what I suspect could be spanish macks (I only use 6 or 10lb line). Seen so many big macks lost on the beach over the years because none of us regulars use wire. I do see the big noahs out from the creek mouth on the ebb (obviously hoovering up fish leaving the creek), so I reckon fishing the ebb at a creek mouth next week with the big new moon tides you wouldn't be waiting long to get a run. Other option I guess is Palm cove jetty

I'm northside so big drive for me to go East Trinity. I've got a mate who hits the doggie mackeral in winter with high speed spinners off the rocks going to Port Douglas; maybe work at False cape too. Saw a croc in Barr creek a couple of weeks ago that was big enough to definitely overturn a kayak - I've had a couple of close encounters over the years so am very croc aware.

Footnote: I'd be too scared to 'swim' a bait out on the beaches; I see a LOT of very big sharks! Also a croc might have a go at you in a kayak

I know where your talking about at False Cape - mackerel there when the water is clear i.e: north east winds. I'm too lazy to drive that far though. Should be big grunter coming on there now too. Sharks everywhere - I've been seeing a lot of big bullies and hammerheads at Holloways beach recently, quite close to shore. Sharks are the bane of my life there when fishing livies for barra and salmon. Plenty of bullies in the Barron too - could try at the fishing platform at Stratford or at the old Kamerunga bridge; I always see bullies smashing mullet on early morning high tides at Kamerunga. I don't fish in (these current) SE winds, but prior (up to about a week ago) there's been loads of barra and salmon on the beaches, this made some nice fish cakes last weekend.

Just drive up Gillies range road and you'll see heaps of creeks you could hike up and find some sooties. Just stop at one you like the look of, park the car at a campsite and start walking. Watch out for yowies if your gonna camp overnight though. Or pick a gorge and start hiking up it e.g: Behana or Tully gorge

Aside from a few 50-60cm blue salmon; spanish mackeral have been on the beach lately. Nobody has managed to land one yet

Tried an after dark session last night at the same spot. Had about 20 mullet; all gone within an hour - landed 6 blue salmon in the 50-60cm range (kept 2 for a feed) and dropped three line screamers; all pulled hooks. Tipping big king salmon. Several mullet were hit even before I had a chance to flick the bail arm over after casting.

I love the 2" gulp shrimps, and not a fan of Z-mans at all as they seem too stiff to me e.g: very little tail wobble. The Keitech range is my absolute favourite

unfortunately the 30lb leader failed me yesterday; hooked a very large king salmon and the leader parted when it jumped. Got two undersize salmon and didn't hook any barra at all.

30lb leader, 6lb main; the guy was asking me how heavy my leader was. Completely need the 30lb leader for barra gill rakers and fraying from salmon. With how little you could fit on the spool, I think you'd spool yourself just in casting out with 30lb on a 2500 size reel!

Finally north east winds started today after 10 months of south easterlies, so the beach is going to fire in the next few days. Hit the beach late afternoon with live mullet and managed a new PB at 116cm. My wife took the video; its a bit too long and gets boring sorry! Was released healthy. You mentioned how expensive blood worms are - when I was a kid on the Tweed I used squirt worms for whiting and blackfish which were way better than blood worms (and free if you have a yabbie pump). Just have to pump around the casings you can see at low tide, but takes a lot of them to make a decent amount of bait.

Not a good time of year for them but may be able to put you onto a bull shark in the Barron river when your in Cairns. If you'd settle for hammerheads and blacktips the beach here is full of them in Winter. Gimme a shout when your up this way and could go have a look after work

Earthworms seems to be the go in Cairns for tillies. In my local creek they don't seem to take anything else, plus the bonus is the silver grunter and jungle perch eat them too :cheer:

yeah we should take more photos, the red fish have been so good lately they are not worthy of a photo if under 50cm

Good on ya mate and hope you pick something up. I wanted the same kind of part time job when I was 14 but couldn't land one. Used to get some good coin though working in factories on school holidays- back then (mid 1980's) you had to be 15, dunno about now.

Years ago I was on a Navy vessel in Papua new Guinea and we were anchored on a reef for a Sunday arvo. We had chicken legs for lunch and all the bones went over the side. After lunch we had a fish and got some big reds, a couple of which were kept for a feed. When we cleaned them found they were stuffed to the gills with the chicken bones we had chucked over the side earlier. Also in Papua New Guinea a couple of the boys had made up a shark line which they baited with a whole raw chicken that they got off the cook. They caught a tiger shark about 4m long on it, which the local villagers claimed, towed ashore and had a big feast on it.
