Now that sounds like one of my fishing trips! However, the only difference is you actually managed to catch something! lol
It could be worthwhile me keeping a diary though, if only to advise people where and when not to fish.
Hi GregOug
Haha, I know the feeling lol.
I do advise you keep a fishing diary as well, it will help to see what tides/moons etc to go fishing.

Hi GregOug
Thanks for that report, it's very handy. I might see if i can get out in the bay sometime too.

Hi Old Scaley
That’s a nice session you had, despite not catching what you wanted. If you can, I recommend fishing with live bait around the docks with one soft vibe lure. Good to see some crabs too
I find dead baiting with herring, mullet etc is always very efficient for fish, I caught my profile picture one on half a dead herring lol.
The fishing journal is also good, thanks for the statistics.

Hi Fishaman
That's some great stuff, I can only dream about catching those fish
Were you using dead bait on a paternoster rig or livies?

Hi kmcrosby78
That’s something I can start to record, the wind

Hi Old Scaley
I have been keeping one for my fishing trips, this is how I set them out in case it helps.
Date:
Location:
Fish Caught:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Lures/Baits Used:
1.
2.
3.
Tide time:
Weather:
Moon cycle:
Tackle:
Overall Success Rate:
That's how I make up mine, if there's anything else you think I could add/that I've missed, I'd love to hear it The moon cycle is just something I've thought of too.
I normally write them up on a sketchbook but I've been a bit slack lately lol. I keep mine for the exact same reason as you, to see when to and to not go to that spot.
Hope this helped

G'day Leejin
Do you throw a cast net? If you do, you should try out Colmslie for prawns, whether you want fresh/freezer bait or a feed. I have also heard tales of people catching threadfin off the pier there, but unless you are night fishing with live bait (and there isn't a crowd of fisherman) I don't think you'd have a high chance (very well fished). I've never had much luck at Nudgee, either. You also get a lot of herring at Colmslie.
You could try the Pine River/Shorncliffe area, I've heard the Shorncliffe Pier fishes well for bream, flathead, whiting and possibly cod. I'd assume it's using prawn, though that's just from being shown/told about it. If you can find a jetty or landbased spot on the Pine I'd say give it a go, (google maps) probably fishing with prawns, and fish strips would probably work too. I've only been on the Pine once (I caught a sole and little bream on a friends tinny) but if you're fishing muddier areas you'd probably get bream, cod, etc while on the flats whiting, sole, flathead, etc. Also, remember a couple lures If you can throw a net, try for some prawns too.
Hope this has helped,
Cheers Hamish

Hi KC24
These are just some spots I've found from a book (Landbased Fishing Guide Brisbane Area by Nigel Webster). I can't say I've fished all of them but they should get you started.
1. Raby Bay Canal Northern Entrance - bream, flathead, whiting, tailor, mangrove jack, trevally, estuary cod, crabs
2. Raby Bay Foreshores - whiting, flathead, bream, tailor, squid
3. Cleveland Point - whiting, bream, flathead, mangrove jack, mud and sand crabs
Here are some areas around Victoria Point to:
1. Point Halloran - whiting, bream, flathead, tailor, squid
2. Victoria Point - bream, flathead, whiting, tailor, snapper, estuary cod, squid, crabs
3. Yeo Park Shoreline - whiting, flathead, bream
4. Redland Bay Boat Ramp - whiting, bream, flathead, tailor, jewfish, mangrove jack, mud and sand crabs
5. Point Talburpin - whiting, bream, flathead
From what the book says, I get that most of these locations are good to flick lures around near structure/in the shallows while in deeper parts use bait for jew, jacks, snappers and estuary cod. Hope this is a good guideline to get you to some fishing spots, and I hope you are successful at a couple of them
Cheers Hamish

Hi Junky
Yeah, my oldest reel is on it's seventh year, my size 1000 Shimano Sienna. I put a drop of lube where the reel handle is, where the knob connecting the reel handle on the other side is, where the bail arm flicks over and in any other spot which turns, flicks, etc. I only use WD-40 where the spool is so that part doesn't rust. I probably should start using specialized cleaners, thanks for the tip Sorry I don't know the name of these parts by the way, I should probably learn that
I will check the drag washers out too, and give them a nice grease. Thanks for recommending the site too, I'll have a look on it.
Cheers Hamish

Hi Junky
Thanks for that, I love writing them too. Yeah, I have taken it apart this afternoon and no rust whatsoever so after drying I put WD-40 and lube on, it seems in very good shape so I reckon whoever dropped it only did a couple days ago, it spins good too. I hope it lands it's first fish soon, we'll see how it goes.

Hi all
My dad and I were thinking we should go for a paddle on the Upper Brisbane River fishing for bass. We finally got around to it, and after putting some bait traps in at my local park I got some good river shrimp. My brother and sister came along, and it was a nice session overall. Here's what happened and the only catch was a huge surprise
We launched the kayak at twin bridges, at Fernvale. Though, since my mum's having a rest, we had to take my brother and sister... At first, they didn't want to go, but after some thinking we decided we could tow them in Dad's 35-year-old rubber dingy, which is in surprisingly good shape. At first, I was towed to a snag where I've had a big bust off, but not in a pool after the rapids where, I would've preferred to go (as well as my Dad). The people camping seemed fine with us staying there, but we certainly didn't want to get kicked away so we just stayed in ankle deep water. Though, getting towed was a disaster as I was slumped back the whole time and couldn't paddle. We switched roles on the way home and it worked fine because they sat on the edge and didn't half sink it
The rubber dingy
After soaking a Cicada Jackall, spinnerbait and live river shrimp for about 15 minutes, my Dad and siblings decided they'd want to go over and have a play over the other side of the river. Though, as they were walking over, you won't believe what my brother stepped on. At first, they thought it was line, but then after pulling it in, they realised it was an un-rusted rod with a Diawa Shinobi attached, which still worked! It had a decent hardbody attached and they gave it a cast straight away Free rod and reel for us! The owners must've been so bummed about it, but they obviously didn't know the water was waist deep.
A few river shrimp, caught in opera house traps
We fished/swam for about 15-30 more minutes, but we weren't catching much (probably due to the fact that people were camping and we were so noisy) so we decided to head back. We had to make it a short session anyways, back to school tomorrow so apparently, we needed to 'rest' LOL. I only have to drop my books in though, but they've got a full day. Also, does anyone know where to purchase plumbers’ putty as we need it to mount our depth sounder on. Overall, it was a nice paddle, and on the way back we stopped at the Fernvale bakery for a pie, it was delicious.
Statistics:
Tackle used: 2/o suicide hooks, 20lb fluorocarbon leader, #8 shank hooks, small pencil float, split shots (I know 20lb is a bit excessive but we don't like losing lures and its very snaggy territory around there)
Temperature: About 31C
Weather: Partly cloudy, very humid,
Caught: Fishing rod and reel, live river shrimp, live garden worms
I hope this was entertaining,
Cheers Hamish

Hi fishingaustralia.tom
You should be able to get some spots/marks from any local tackle shop/charter guide, I know there is great pelagic fishing around there as well as bread and butter species.

Hi Allnighter
Great session there, I've always wanted to catch some snapper in the bay.

Hi Grmby
Sorry, I have no knowledge of that area, but as a general rule fish will be washed down from upper reaches/further up after rain so fish towards the mouth of any system.

Brisbane River Session #5

Hi all
My brother and I decided to go to our local park on the Brisbane River yesterday, targeting sharks. We were successful and had some other surprises. Here's what happened, and the statistics of the trip
So, after waking up at 5:30AM, I woke my brother up. Well, it was to early for him, so I got my Dad up and he took me down. After he left, I threw out my shark lines, one with a slab of mullet, the other with a bony bream. The combos were a Rogue Firepoint 6'6" and a Penn 650 with 30lb braid, as well as a lower quality set up. I was up on the pier area, not on the jetty, but i saw two pecks, (well strikes) and I ran down thinking "Jeez, am I on one already?" Nope! I reeled it in, and nothing was on the hook - *disappointed*. Then, I caught a little catfish which was perfect shark bait size, which i kept (mainly because the line was stuck in it's gills). I pulled up a couple more, threw the cast net and caught a prawn for live bait, then Declan came down with Dad, and after a couple more bait checks we had caught about 5 catties. They each put up a good fight for their size, they really took off when the drag was loose Great fun too. The catfish are caught on a 1000 size Shimano Sienna and a 2500 Diawa Shinobi.
Now it was about 8:00AM, and I did another bait check on the shark lines. I felt a sudden pull, then realised I was hooked up. After about a five minute fight, I realised the little bully was tangled with this line and he was actually hooked on the other It was a pretty bad situation, because he had some wire tang;ed around his body, but after he rolled a couple times I could walk him down to the jetty to land him. In about another 10 minutes, he was netted and then released. Here he is-
We didn't get a precise measurement but I'd say he was around 80cm and about 5 kilos. He scoffed a big chunk of mullet down too. After he was dealt with and released, Declan and I pulled up a couple more catfish, and by that time it was warming up a bit (but we were in shade). We only kept one shark line out, i figured it would be easier to handle. We had a crowd watching the bull shark too, a lady who walks there a lot and someone else.
So, we re-casted all the lighter lines then upped the catfish count to seven or eight. Then, I dropped a line right next to pylon (mainly so it wouldn't get tangled with the other because we were fishing the run out of the end of the pier which is only about five metres wide). I hooked up after about ten minutes, at first thinking it was an ok catty again, but then after feeling the weight and the runs it was doing back to the structore I released it was something better. I got it away from the structure and then was happy/surprised to see a nice estuary cod on the end of my line. I slowly walked it down while Declan was grabbing some gear, like the landing net, brag mat, lip grips and pliers and he scooped it up. I dehooked it and it measured about 40cm on the mat. Here it is -
He was released to be caught next time and swum off well, back under the pier/jetty. After that, Declan pulled up a few more catties (I let him have them after set the drag, etc) and he was having fun. After we got the tally to ten, the bite went quiet, as it was about 10:00AM and the tide had slowed a little. Most of the catties would've been under 30cm, but he caught a couple bigger ones. Then, I pulled in one more and my Dad came down and took us home. Here are the statistics of the trip:
Statistics
Tide: 1.7metre high, run out and .8 metre low, at approx. 10:00AM
Moon Phase: First Quarter, so not that much run
Weather: 34c, 55% humidity
Wind: Very glassy, though the breeze picked up later in the morning
Tackle Used: 14lb braid mainlines, 12;b mono leader, size 2 bean sinkers, 4/o suicide hooks, 30lb braid mainline, 80lb wire trace, 100lb mono leader, 6/o circle hook.
Fish Caught: Shark x 1, Catfish x 9, Estuary Cod x 1
Bait Caught: Prawn x 1
Bait Used: Herring, Mullet, Prawn
Successful Overall: Very Successful Trip
I hope you enjoyed reading the report, I know it was a very fun session
