Not so much of a sounder setting, but rather something I have found out over time. If you leave your sounder/gps on board your boat  with the connections still plugged in the back(rather then physically remove it) you should consider installing a switch to cut off the power to the unit. My units  have direct connections to the battery, and of course I turn them off when not in use. However because there is still power going to the head unit,  the pins that connect are susceptible to corrosion (that green stuff). Yes I use dielectric grease, but the corrosion can still occur. Adding a toggle switch on the power in side, cuts the power to the head unit and this corrosion no longer occurs.

gungadin reacted to Ed. in Built A 60l Spare Fuel Tank
I will be going to Agnes Waters Qld. with the missus for the 1770 AusFish meet and greet trip in about a month and hoping to get out a few times to the Barrier reef (about 65Km out to sea), whilst I have a reasonable sized inbuilt fuel tank I would hate to get there and find that I need more fuel. So decided that rather have portable fuel cans lying around I would build myself an extra 60L fuel tank.

Got a sheet of 3mm Ally 5083/H116 and cut it down to size, had to take it to a sheet metal worker who put the bends in, however found that this ally temper needs a much wider radius in it and it had developed many thin cracks in the 90 degree bends.

I set the TIG to 150A and just quickly blasted the bend corners inside and out, that caused the cracks to melt into each other and fuse solid. Put in a fuel filler cap and also a 3/8" NPT threaded Boss with a 90 degree elbow to a 1/2" fuel line plus with a tap, added 4 angles to the tank to screw it in place in front of the passenger seat. This tank will double as a foot rest for the missus. Thinking of gluing a bit of carpet to the top so the missus can put her feet on it in the summer.

Just need to have some sort of clip added to the seat to stop the tap from rubbing and becoming loose. Tested the tank up to 8PSI as it is a small tank and it is about twice the pressure that most manufacturers do, so no leaks.

So when I get to the reef, I will just open the fuel hatch near the base of the tank and just let the spare tank drain into the main tank next to it, which you can see the cover in the last pic.

I will be taking the boat to the mechanics on Wednesday to see if the problem I had with the motor going in to limp mode recently can be simply and cheaply fixed, otherwise this will have been a futile attempt.

I have only camped overnight once, through necessity not choice, but if I did it  often and by choice i would carry a Jump starter such as  https://www.amazon.com/Imazing-Portable-Car-Jump-Starter/dp/B07L5HPVJZ/ref=sr_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=jumpstart+pack&qid=1595083774&sr=8-15  just in case.

I heard that Evinrude is making outboard motors again. Not what we are used to seeing, but all below the transom. Also they are teaming up with an Australian company to market them "down under" You will only be able to buy a complete package, no retrofitting to your present boat. Makes me and a few others think they are going electric so only the leg is behind the boat. Anyone else heard anything about this?

We do a lot of trolling for salmon here, and a lot of people use cruiser type boats with a cuddy cabin and steering up forward. Two years ago we installed a rear mounted steering control so that he could stand at the rear of the boat and steer his kicker while still being able to see where he is going and watch his downriggers at the same time. His kicker is tied into his main for steering.

This is where I mounted it. It is not a marine product that I used, but an under hood light from a Kenworth  log truck. I measured the height difference between the bow lights and it is 65cm+/- above them. The black dot at the front is a waterproof switch.

For some of my launch sites, there is a wharf (pontoon?) that I can climb into the boat from, so I don't need to climb over the bow. On other sites (where I have to climb onto the bow), the boat starts to to move off the trailer as soon as I start to climb on so it becomes a race to get to the stern, lower the engine and start it up before I end up  somewhere I don't want to be.  With  an automatic release system I should be able to to do all of that  in a more relaxed and in my own sweet time, without tripping over fuel tanks, fishing gear and the like.😄 at least I hope so.

Yes I have, it was on a 60hp Yamaha, Enduro that I had put a trim and tilt system from a 200hp. It had two open ended trim cylinders that I just used to slip a couple of pieces of  white 3/4" pipe over, the lower the engine onto them,  On my trips up island from Campbell River to Port Hardy there was never a problem. I replaced them about every two years.
