  1. Can anyone help with the actual rules regarding land based cast netting in the Newport canal system. I've heard that Newport marina may have leased the sea floor, and I understand not to hop onto anyones private pontoon or to go walking through other peoples backyard. However if there is a park at the end of one the the canals, where there is no private yard or pontoon and its not inside the marina. Is it ok to cast net there? Or is there a law against this.?
  2. Happy Easter everyone. I've asked for the Easter Bunny to bring me some prawns this year.!
  3. I finally had enough and took on the conditions yesterday. I got up at stupid o'clock and the bay was windy, cold, wet and snotty. But the fish count was worth it. Bagged on snapper in no time with a few other nice surprises chucked. Here is one of the better fish. 63cm Grassy.!

    flathead

I normally start fishing for them around this time of year, picked up 19 of varied sizes last week between two fishos in a couple of hours.
  5. I've been watching for the last week, decided to give Monday a try. Based purely on I think it should be a better bite window. Worst case, if it all turns to poo, at least I will have a long weekend.!
  6. Thanks, Ray and Neil. Although the weather was against us, it was still a great morning. Would have to say that that was one of the best yella bites I've had, literally a fish a drop, and they were all good quality.
  7. The old saying is... the harder you pull, the harder the fish will pull back.
  8. I have never measured the drag on any of my reels, have always just gone by feel. In saying that, in clean water, fresh or salt, I will happily play a fish and go a bit easier, if I'm up north on the reefs, I will pretty much fish locked with my thumb on standby, cause if you are trying to pull a big trout out of a bommie or a red from the deep... I really don't like giving them an inch. As for land based sharks, I've always gone has much drag as I can, as long as I can still comfortably stand, and hey... if you start getting dragged down the sand, there is always someone to grab onto ya.!!

    Fish Id

Yes I can confirm it is definitely an ugly ouch. I didn't get spiked as such, it was more of a slice, so I don't think I got any real venom. Although the leg was still a bit painful for a few hours haha

    Fish Id

Hi All, Just after some identification if anyone can help. I believe this may be a bullrout.? But I got him in the salt which is a bit confusing as I thought they were a freshwater water fish. If it's not a bullrout that took a wrong turn, does anybody have any suggestions.?
  11. When I berley for snaps in the bay or around the peninsula, I only ever use pilly cubes. Then I also drop an unweighted cube with a hook buried in it too, it's amazing how many big snaps that it catches, and most of the snaps will have a belly full of pills cubes.

    The new boat

Awesome looking boat. Do you normally fish the bay or do you have plans for going further abroad.?
  13. I'm not the biggest fan of neap tides, but I do watch the moon. I've always preferred a bit of run. For instance, if I'm chasing flatties it must be a .4 or lower low tide for me to go or a 2.2 or higher tide for freds in the river. It definitely works but it could just be a confidence thing too. If it's in the deep water and it's running to hard, put a bigger sinker on and tell the skipper to stay on a wheel. With that being said, if the weather is good and I'm allowed to go... who cares what the tides are doing hahahaha.
  14. Update, Plenty of whitting about today, everywhere we tried we caught them. Nothing photo worthy but a bit of fun, all released as I have enough fillets in the freezer. As for the squid... well I think my name says it all. Only seen one, and couldn't get it to eat. Which is strange, normally if I can see them I can catch them, but not today. Was only on the water for about 3 hours.
  15. Hijack away, the more chatting the better.! I actually run a garmin sounder but I have lent the head unit to a mate and I'm to lazy to go get it back. I will use the mark that mangajack shared on my phone to put me in the general area and see what I can find from there. Not sure if I will chuck a whitting rod in yet, a may drag a worm behind just in case there are any whitting about.
  16. I've never actually been there. So i got 2 options. Option 1... I do have a few old gps points if I can be bothered turning the sounder on. Or option 2... when leaving from scarbie, pretty much head towards bribie find a red beacon and look for the other boats. I like the challenge of option 2 haha
  17. Hi All, just after some knowledge if anyone is willing to share. I am chasing a feed of squid on Friday. I know they are about in the southern part of the bay, but I am time restricted so I was thinking about staying on the Northside. Having never fished the cockle banks is it worth trying this time of year for squid, or will I be wasting my time.? Thanks in advance.!
  18. What have happened to the bass Ray.? They sulking because of all rain of late or do you think alot have escaped?
  19. Great catch Neil, good to see there is a few grassies about. I will be chasing them tomorrow.!
  20. Yeah there is. Although, you do have to work for them. A few of the locals hit them pretty hard.
  21. Nice work Neil, I had the exact same idea and headed down the pin on Wednesday. Managed to get a couple of good feeds of some solid whiting. I did find the whiting a bit sensitive on the bite and wouldn't really commit to the bait. Were they the same when u were there or had they fired up a bit more for you.?
  22. What flavour doughnut Ray.? I like the chocolate ones with sprinkles
  23. There a quite a few good fish to be caught in hays. Plenty of flatties with a few jew every now and then, plus the standard bream and whitting. No specific lures or plastics, I think I have caught flatties down there on just about every lure I own. As for fresh bait options, heaps of soldier crabs there, or take a cast net, there's no shortage of livies. However as Mangajack said earlier, there is no specific spot, just gotta find where they a sitting on the day.
