What operation are you going with over there are you fishing the fly and sepik regions?

I’ve fished PNG a few times and hands down one of the best places of been In my life. It’s like any foreign country you visit just don’t go to areas that put you in vulnerable situations. If your going on a guided fishing trip your Saftey is very much in good hands. The locals in these remote regions benefit greatly from tourists and they understand this. Fingers crossed I might be heading back there in March for a few weeks for work so might have to dust off the xtra heavy bait caster lol.

Just be careful as leaving pots unattended often ends up in them being stolen or checked for you. It’s actually pretty bad in certain areas. Also learn to know what a pro crabbers float looks like as, if you put you pots anywhere near his string ( a line of crabs pots in a row) you can almost guarantee they won’t be there when you return or at a minimum there will be a big slice through your pots rendering them useless. Don’t let this deter you though fresh crab is great just pick your areas well. Good luck!

Yeah I agree with Benno they start to deteriorate after days without food. I would keep alive for maybe two or three days tops then cook and freeze. It may be a lot of work and you’ll loose the aesthetics but in my opinion I’d cook shell all the meats and cryovac the meat and freeze. Only problem with this method is that you’ll end up eating half of your catch while you pick out the meat

Yes, thanks Sef. I use both Meteye (BOM) and Willy to get a feel. Today's feel just wasn't quite on song.
Yeah it’s a weird one even though they come from the same site met eye often reads different to the marine wind model which makes no sense as they are both from bom. I guess they give us a few options in the hopes they get one right

Oh well at least you got out and got a feed sux about the weather though. In my opinion the bom wind model is far more accurate than willy weather and sea breeze. Worth checking out if you don’t use it already. I little bit annoying to navigate but far more accurate

Hi all, does any one know why I can’t find nuggets forum when I google I can’t find it any where and it’s the best reference as to when or where prawns have been caught. Has it been shutdown?

Good luck mate that’s a great part of the world up there. I hope you get some great fish!

Nice work again there mate your going pretty good with those sharks, well done

Nice mate, you definitely can’t go wrong with any rod out of the Wilson stable. There hands down some of the best rods Ive used. Spotties are definitely around too my mate got seven or eight on the weekend at the foul grounds.

Nice man, that bait ball In your photo is the darkest/densest I’ve seen in a long time. I was fishing off Straddie a few weeks back and hadn’t seen so much surface bait in years. Hopefully a good pelagic season to come

I hog tie them. An old salty fisho showed me years ago.
I looked like i'd been Texas chainsaw masacreing the things one day. A beautiful white fishing shirt turned to a stained looking maroon, not to mention the hat, hair, eyebrows.
All from the donger and their fits on the floor.
I have a a length of 80lb Schneider about a meter long with a 10/O hook at either end.
As soon as the fish hits the deck you jump on it. One hook in the mouth, knee on head, bend the fish like a banana. Double wrap the tail and the second hook in the mouth as well. Can be difficult with the larger models over say 7kg but still effective.
Stops all that carry on and you're not creating a massive blood bath with a donger allthough there still is blood.
Fish can sit on deck or straight in the esky and bleed them.
I’d have to see that one in action I could see that method going south real quick in more ways Than one when on my own, on a slippery deck not to mention bruising the bejesus out of the fillets. Generally if I’m not frigging around on the wheel whilst trying to gaff and avoid the fad simultaneously, my preferred way is to gaff and defer straight into the ice box and dispatch in a semi closed coffin providing ive had the for thought lifting the lid after hooking up

So easy thanks. I will be doing this more. We do the same for cuttlefish but have it nearly on the bottom.
Yeah maybe closer to the bottom is better 10m might be a bit much just depends on if your drifting big lumps coz you don’t wanna get snagged when your hooked up sort of thing

How do you target the deep water squid?
Just get a four or five ball sinker above the jig drop to the bottom then wind up five to ten metres and put it in the rod holder while you drift and fish with another rod.

Nice feed and reward for the early start.
What are those marks near the dolly's head ?
To say that this thing misbehaved on deck was an under statement. May need to upgrade the priest from an alloy bat to a lead pipe next Time

Headed out recently on my own for a solo session with the intent of nailing some tasty dollies. Made damn sure I’d have my livies and be first at the fad which can make the world of difference. So with a tank full of yakkas and unfortunately only 3 slimies I headed straight for fad 4. Anyone who wants to chase dollies out from spb you can forget about fad 15 as this thing is sitting on top of sand and dosnt attract three fifths of F all in my opinion. I’ve wasted fuel on previous trips to 15 and dosnt even seem to have rat kings on it. If anyone on here has seen otherwise please let me know but for me it’s a wasted resource.
had the joint to myself which was nice but with a drift of 3 and a half knots it made it interesting keeping the boat in gear to stay semi stationary upstream of the fad whilst fighting some decent dollies on my own. Ended up with three hookups all to quite thick quality fish in the 1.2 to 1.5m range. Landed one, pulled hooks on the second and the third was never really hooked properly but was just running with the fish In it’s mouth, excuse the crappy selfy photo. After this they went quiet but I think it was due to the fact they only wanted the big over size livies that swim fast and go down deep. So with only small yakkas left and a charter boat and few other boats steaming over the horizon I decided to head back In close to boat and middle reef to try for some reefies. Got busted off twice on some little jelly been yakkas . But managed to piece together some good size and quite chunky squire, grassies and Moses
things started to get pretty quiet now so had a go for some Deep water squid but only managed the one. Headed back across a glass bay before the wind picked up so all in all was a pretty good outing.

18 hours ago, GregOug said:My father, uncle and grandfather used to catch the giant parrot in the bay when I was young. I’m talking about parrot of twenty pounds plus. Not sure if these are the tuskies we catch today in much smaller sizes but they looked like them. My uncle had a house on the foreshore at Dunwich. Anyway, I distinctly remember (which is very rare for me, by the way) taking torches and catching the ghost crabs as they sat mesmerised by the light. They used these for catching the huge tuskies. My uncle also used to keep paint cans filled with mullet gut which he used to leave in his shed uncovered for months before it was ready for use catching all types of fish.
Yeah those big blackspot tuskies are still around if you put in the effort ive got a few over the 20lb mark in the last two years

Nice work good eating fish to, how good to the tuskies fight even when there small they go hard Especially if your in the shallows. If you can be bothered take a pair of rubber tipped tongs and get yourself some purple rock crabs from any rocky foreshore and your tusky catch will in crease by a metric buttload (scientific measurement!).
