Also mate I was having a think about this a bit more and just realised we have a another member with the same first name as you. He is a northsider and a myriad of species avoid him like the bubonic plague there is a possibility that the Spanish have got you confused with Greg oug. In which case there’s not a great deal you can do about it

Hi mate I had refrained from touching this one as I didn’t want to sound rude. But seen as tho a few others have said what I was thinking I’ll chime in. Spanish are literally not a hard fish to target. Prolific all along the Qld coast. And central Qld where your fishing is renowned for having a great mackerel fishery. If you have tried everything thing you said then I’m not sure if any advice I give you will help. I think your best bet would to be persisting with live bait. I like to use 50lb single strand wire to a 7/0 hook through the nose with a small(but strong/good quality) stinger hook run from the eye of the 7/0 to the tail end of the livey on the under side. Float two or three of these rigs 5 metres below the surface at different distances between ten and thirty metres behind the boat under a balloon whilst at anchor. A modest amount of Berley can help to. Throwing very large stick baits whilst drifting reef edges along with trolling live and dead baits can be far more productive techniques but if your desperate I’d stick with the basics until the monkey is off your back.Any drop off or reef edge with current that holds bait will eventually see a Spanish cruise past. Dawn dusk and tide changes will increase your odds. Any way good luck mate keep at it. If you’ve put in this much effort it would be a shame to give up now

Nice trip mate, I was up there Friday and Saturday we fished Sykes and found the exact same thing. We went wide on both Friday and Saturday and the Sounders were lit up but the fish just weren’t chewing In the 60metre plus ground. We jagged one red in sixty and all our other fish came from 40 and under.

Fresh tailor is highly underrated IMO, my fav is crumbed in panko. If you treat it properly from catch you won’t be disappointed

I have found that the snapper season after a flood year tends to be really good. Not sure why but probably something to do with all the bait getting flushed and nutrients etc. this is after the water has cleared up and salinity is back to normal though. I remember specifically 2012 the threadies and snapper were thick as I’d ever seen them back when I used to fish the port of Brisbane

Wow. How many throws of the net do you reckon it took to get that load ?
It was hard work it took three solid hours of two people casting non stop. Its always hard with that many boats as the prawns scatter easily

I headed out yesterday to confirm or deny the prawns status In The southern bay. As mentioned earlier thought I’d selflessly leave the weekend for those who worked this week the only problem was there was 50 to 60 other selfless fishos on a Friday morning. I’m guessing there will be close to 100 boats there on the weekend. Rumours were confirmed though!!

I'd be keen to get some in Nudge river too as it is a lot closer to me.
Any tips on where to go there and what tides?
Haha lol when there on at nudgee you’ll know where they are, just point you boat towards the mouth and you’ll see a whole flotilla. It’s literally the busiest spot going. I’ll send you a pm when I hear of any reports from nudgee. They prawns are just outside the mouth just be carful as there is a green zone near there

Good article that one @jon. I noticed after we got that heavy rain a while back that one of the pros in the bay had his pots in the deep channel on the eastern side of the Hope Banks, so obviously deep is the go sometimes. Still not sure I'd want to crab in 25m of water - that's alot of rope!!
I am extremely guilty of just chucking in on my way to go fishing and 'hoping' I'll catch some. I guess it's like fishing - you need to put the time in to learn the patterns and find where they are.
This time of year is definitely worth trying some deeper channels, just throw a paver in there if your worried about current but less pots to contend with aswell

That’s a nice haul of prawns, you will be eating a fair few tacos to finish that.
Only problem I have is the bar crusher cubby, gunwales and outboard all combine to make it awkward to throw a cast net frequently. When u going prawning do u see any cuddy cabs having a crack or it mostly open tinnies?
I wonder if the Minister of finance Would allow a second boat specifically for prawningYeah you definitely see the odd big boat out there but needs a dedicated driver and one person to cast. I’ve done it once in my big boat and it’s a real hassle if there’s lots of boats around. Funnily enough last time I was out, there was a cat that was close to 7 metres with twin 150’s on the back needless to say he had to stay a bit away from the pack
Early, cold but successful.
