  1. Hey mate, welcome to the site!

There’s ground all round peel and also over near goat island that will hold fish. Definitely fishes better weekdays or at night when boat traffic is at its minimum.  If you look around the NW corner (outside the green zones) and the SW corner of peel and the western/southern sides of goat you will find good areas. Look for drop offs with rubble patches. Live hardiheads work well and are usually fairly easy to obtain with a cast net in horseshoe bay. Other than that peeled green prawns, pilchards and squid strips are my go to baits. Flesh baits also work. Fish as light as you dare and remember you don’t need the bait to be anchored on the bottom, snapper, grassies, mackerel and tailor will readily rise to a floating bait if presented well.

Another way to try and gain some experience is to offer to take someone who has fished the area before out with you. There’s plenty of people on this site who know the area and can provide a few pointers and locations. Like most fishes we are all a bit (or a lot) reluctant to go posting GPS marks or more precise locations on a website which I am sure you can appreciate.

  2. Hey mate,

bummer about the donut... they are delicious but not ideal when fishing.

Chuck a post up before your next trip - there’s plenty of people on here who fish that area very regularly who can give you some pointers/tips depending on the time of year etc. Glad your mate had a good time though. 👍👍

I could take that haha. What a great story. I did not know that dogs were able to be so well trained.

What I wouldn't do to get some of that venison salami!

Mate it is eff good. Best salami I’ve ever eaten. Also good are goat and garlic sausages, venison saveloys, duck nuggets, turkey burgers, venny steaks, whole roast goat or venison legs on the Weber, abalone (paua) fritters... we don’t really go hungry hey... 😁😁😁

  4. @ellicat - you would not enjoy the hills at all.  i struggled a bit with a couple of them, knee held up fine, just took my time.

@kmcrosby78 - i doubt that it would have been declared... and you'd probably get away with it 95% of the time.  the thought did cross my mind as the venison salami that Nath gets made is mindblowingly good - but i didn't want to risk losing one if they took it off me - would be such a waste!

@Drop Bear @ellicat having a ninja dog opens up so many more shooting opportunities that would otherwise not exist - mostly around flowing rivers and that sort of stuff where downed birds do not sit and wait.  for the rest he is still good to have as it saves me jumping on the kayak (see video) or climbing out of the layout blind and doing the fetching!  Also he is very quick to grab a crippled bird so it can be sorted out immediately.

he is also trained as a game indicating dog - he will scent deer/goats in the bush and locate a downed animal easily as well.  he is strong and fit enough that he can carry about 10kg in his saddlebags as well - handy if you drop a big red deer or a mob of goats and it's a long carry out.  also means he carries his own food and water in.  makes the whole hunting experience over there a lot easier - did take about 12 months solid of training as well as constant ongoing "top ups" to get to this point though.  if you check out some of Nath's other vids you will see him in action on things other than ducks.

you do have to be careful around ninja though. often when the action is a little slower in the maimai he will get bored and a cold wet nose will start to very forcefully burrow its way under your arm and all of a sudden a labrador head will appear on your chest. 😏

  5. That stessl looks like a good package.  Has everything you need, expect maybe a canopy for when you take the fam out for the day, easy enough to add one if you think you need it.  Solid boat.  Engine has some age on it but only 240 hours use so shouldn't be an issue.  75L tank will give you heaps of range.

    $11K is almost $5K...

    ticking a lot of boxes.

Couple of years back I took a friend of a friend out fishing to do the guy a favour ,as he had lost his job and supposedly loved his fishing, and because he had lost his job supposedly had to sell his boat, his wife dropped him down to Spinnaker Sound Marina and just like your mate, he didn't bring any gear claiming his wife wouldn't let him put his fishing gear in her car, alarm bells should have rung then I suppose, but hey I am a nice fella so shrugged it off and said I have a spare rod an gear you can use no problem, cut a long story short the guy had no idea about fishing, none whatsoever , he bitched about how hot it was, lack of fish action, gear he was using was no good, and reckons it would be more fun sitting in a cafe drinking lattes, I had had enough of the prick after 2 hours so pulled up the pick and headed back to the ramp, when we got there I said, do me a favour and hop out and hang on to the boat for me, which he did, I threw it in reverse and left him standing there, he said what are you doing, I said I am going to pump some yabbies and fish the run in, you can't leave me here he said, my wife is working and cant pick me up until she finishes work, no problems I said, there is a bait shop/cafe 200mtrs over there , you can kill time enjoying a latte and annoy the crap out of them, and off I went, the rest of day was very pleasant and caught a few whiting to yop it off.

I actually "LOL'ed" in the office reading that.  Nice move skipper, d!ck move decky... and you got called out on it. Hope it was a cold and crappy latte to boot. 😂
