Good advice - I am piecing together an itinerary for a Cape York trip next year and had thoughts that catching a jungle perch (or sooty grunter, or both 😎) would be cool. Haven’t researched yet regarding the likelihood of catching one in winter but worst case it would turn into a scenic hike holding a fishing rod … 😎.

Did you end up chasing some?

Sorry not trying to preach really. I took my chances too in those areas. It was well over 20 years ago now. Crocs hadn't been protected for so long then (and I suspect that many locals didn't really care if they were protected...). It's a different story with their numbers and size now.

    Rant over. Sorry.

No need to apologise. I am always taking advice from people. I grew up on the tablelands but never fished these waters.  I was really careful when I fished the Mowbray as I did not believe my mate.

I think it is a good warning and discussion around this. You can not jump into a pristine looking stream and expect it to be free of crocs.  Freshwater creek has several swimming holes below crystal cascades which are heavily used and on the day we where fishing.

at the end of the day better to be safe and it is not worth it to catch a fish.  Thanks for the advice and I will be way more careful

Don't wade in the Mowbray or the slow flowing clear water of any creek or river up there. Best JP's will come from further up the streams in the flowing water. It's also a little less water temperature which makes it less attractive to Crocs.

Thanks. Yeah the pics where we are wading are from freshwater creek where people are swimming in it for a few kms.  It is funny we found we where picking them up in the rapids rather then the pools. So we started to focus there in the Freshy and did better. So different tl fishing for bass further south.

Will stay out of the water from now on.

Your game if you are wading in the Mowbray...???

Yeah that was the one I nearly stood on the one sunning itself on the bank.  I was told it was crocs free but given the viewing platform is not far away we did not wade the creek apart from some shallow crossing.  When we left and started walking back we encountered the council working and they mentioned a 4m croc sunning itself in the same area.  I did not believe the mate anymore.   The pics in the photos are well up Behana and Freshy

Clean water is key, if going land based winter is the best on the mainland. Broken rock  and broken weed beds will hold. Rainbow and rouse hold good numbers. If your ever bottom bashing straddie inshore usual spots like middle reef, big halfway etc be sure to drop a squid jig with a four or five ball sinker above or below the jig then wind up five metres of the bottom and place your rod in the rod holder. Solid squid when targeted like this but not too many people do it.

I am about to start targeting them in the shallow reefs and also the deeper marks as i reckon some of the bait we see out deep may be squid

@crazywalrus YEP! sure do Ted. It was is pretty average shape for a while. I finally got it home after about 6 or 7 years of being either at Angus's house or my sisters or my mates. Over those years as things broke, I never got a chance to fix them and it needed a good clean and wash after life at Angus's where it became his cats favourite place to sleep 😄 So spent a few months taking it all apart, cleaning, rewiring, replacing, respraying and servicing to get it back to water worthy. She's almost back to the same glory as when i bought it off @bigtez. Just gotta replace the re-circulating pump in the livewell and pony up for a new trailer. Currently running on a cheapo 2nd hand trailer that I wouldn't take on a long drive or over bumpy tracks.

I can imagine what it was like. They do not fair well when off the water. How was the motor, it cost me 2k to get mine back on the water.  Did you paint the famous black and green colours again?

  7. I have often wondered where the location of the Brisbane Bar recording station was, so i looked it up today. It has always seemed to be out when it comes to the South Passage Bar and I now know why.  It is Located not that far from Mud island.  Not sure how they can call it a Bar though.  So if you are looking at the tide times to cross the South Passage Bar, you should lookup the times for the SPB not the brisbane bar.
