    Thanks Hamish. If you have some sea legs or willing to risk being sick 🤢. I will get you out some time. Remember we do not come back in if someone gets sick. We also fish very hard. Out before light and back at dusk or later.

    @dhess Head out on Friday around the cape.  We hit the FAD but BigCat charters was sitting on top of it and we only managed one hit on a slug. Started float lining and also had a paternoster down do see what was around.  Managed a lot of pannie Snapper without any size, undersized pearlies and a good Samson which gave a good account for itself and my biggest.  
     

    We head out deeper and this is where the fun started. We still had the just over snapper which we returned hoping for a couple Of bigger units to round out the bag and it was not long.
     

    Firstly I should mention when we arrived at the Mark there was another boat drifting it. Rather than just drop in on them or drive away we slowly motored up to them asked if it was ok to join them and work in with their drifts.  All good from them and we started drifting.

    Dom was first on with a good fish landing a mid 60s snapper.  We fished here a bit longer but no quality so moved onto a nearby mark. 
     

    This is where the day got interesting. I dropped down the paternoster and as soon as it hit the bottom, whack, whack and I fell on my arse still holding onto the rod. It was an unusual fight but very solid. I get it up and see colour and I have a mid 60s snapper and a 70 yellow tail kingfish. That explains a lot.  Dom is then onto a massive fish which he man handles at first but the fish quickly man handles Dom and bricks him. Probably a big YTK. 
     

    Home through the rough bay at dusk and quick trip home and I filleted the Samson and YTK for some sashimi that night. So dam good. Hard to pick a favourite.  Well worth the effort of preparing sashimi. My favourite way of eating fish.

    yeh mate. I only started coming back in the last month or so. Kids are old enough for me to now be able to get out for a fish. I think the big change was actually the mrs now finding a hobby and understanding and having a perspective of the obsession I had with my hobby of fishing 😄

    But happy to be back and slowly contributing again. I think this whole work from home thing is also letting me get on AFO more too. 4 screens on my computer desk with 1 committed to AFO. Just like the old days 😄

    I just caught up with Rob Searing and we had a good chat about some of the old names and it's so great to see and hear of so many fishing circles that formed because of BFO are still getting around and catching up.

    Great idea to combine your boats. Yeah, last I recall you had a terrible situation with your rig and the builder selling the business so wouldn't fix?

    Hey Henry, did not expect to see you still on here. I am good, great to back on the water after a long time away.  Dom and I decided to put the best parts of our boats together am his Hull and my motor. We spent over a month working up the shell and setting it up. This is the 4th trio now and it is great. Stable and awesome on fuel.  How have you been going? I was only talking about you the other day.

    There are leaks and then there are greater signs of trouble.  There are so many vairiables here however most boats develop a leak or two over time.  If the boat has been used in the bay repeatly and treated poorly there will be the tell tale signs. Look at the bottom of the hull, along the hull. A boat that has had a hard life will have the hull pushed up /cupped between the ribs and may have significant structural fatigue.  Check that the Ribs are attached and the packing is still in place.  Welding a crack without addressing the cause will only mean you are revisiting the issue again in the near future depending on its use.  It also depends on your planned use, are you fishing creeks, dams, esturay or partially smooth waters.

    Dhess Cracked It!!!!

    Head out with @dhess again on Monday, hunting to bag out on some bigger specimens than last week.  We headed out and grabbed some Live Bait in close which were biting hard with some toothy critters amongst them.  

    We then punched out to the FAD to try and get amongst some Dollies. With plans to put 10 in the boat and our expectations were high, we were quickly deflated.  We found a school of good-sized 1.1 to 1.2m Dollies, but for the life of me, we could not get them excited. They were at the back of the boat, we where cubing, dropping livies on their nose, throwing poppers, plastics, cubed pillies, and everything in the tackle bag with only a brief follow on a popper.  Very disappointed as the size would have been superb. 

    We fished some marks nearby, and this is where I started my day "stuck in the nursery", pulling up the smallest Pearlies I have ever seen. If they where legal I would have bagged five times over as they were biting hard.  Needing a change, we head in a little closer, and then I started catching undersized bloody Snapper instead. 😞  We tried this for an hour and then headed out wider.  

    I decided to hit the mark on its own on the way, and 10 seconds later wack DHess was on, secretly I was not happy and wished I had got my pillie in 10 seconds earlier.  I solid fight ensued, and Dom and I were calling it for a good-sized AJ however it comes up Red. 90cm of beautiful Snapper.   OMFG, Dhess was lucky. I grab his net after taking mine out in the morning, I net the fish, and it fails just when Dom grabs the frame luckily.  The Beast is on board only to have him bite through the 100lb leader on the snell. It could have been a very different outcome. 

    Dom managed some nice sized Bonito here; I caught a Gold Spot which we later reidentified as a Fox fish, either way, it was delicious.  However, once again, I was destined to catch undersized pearlies and Snapper.  In a desperate attempt to catch something legal, we made the call to head out deeper, and this is where we made a fatal mistake. We should have sounded around that depth and tried to catch some more quality fish, but we left fish to find fish. hmmmm 

    We got out deep, and the current died, we were drifting at .2knots to nothing and could not raise a fish, and there were absolutely no shows. Worked this line and our marks for another 6 km but still nothing.  So we head to the 33s near the bar until sundown. However, the current was hauling and even with the drogue we where drifting at 1.5knots making float lining pretty much impossible. 

    A great day out and we went home with something to eat thanks to Dhess. 

    ## also eomthign to note the Bonito cared for correctly and trimmed was superb grilled. 

    On another note. 

    i do not like to waste anything from an animal I kill to eat.  I will recover as much meat as I can, this time removing the wings and cheeks on the large snapper. I turn the frames and heads into stock and freeze it to use in cooking.  We pressure cook what is left and feed it to the chooks safely. The bones end up soft like in a Salmon can.

    Day In The Blue

    I head out with Dom, Coco and Jacob a couple of weeks ago to make the most of the opening  Snapper and Pearl Perch season. It was a great day, and we managed a few fish and got back some of our confidence being without a boat for a few years. It was so good to be back on the water and achieve a few brownie points at home with fresh fish. Fished the off Stradbroke Island finding some interesting ground.

    He Jon - I have a complte set of mould for both snapper leads and balls pretty much. did not bothere tough with the rally small balls. I am not looking to sell them although I should with the amount I made a few years back. You can borrow them if you like.  Not really something you use regularly.  0407118915

I can’t even describe the mess I made of butchering that poor creature. It was all cartilage and guts. Felt bad about wasting it and never tried again.

    I checked out hole to butcher it on Youtube first before attempting it. Fortunately I did not go anywhere near the guts. It will have to be pretty wonderful to make me take one again.

    "I never catch grinders. Haha," Ellicat on Messenger today, this got me thinking, I can now understand his fishing style, swiping Left and Right all day trying to catch a "Grinder".  He did have some success though, landing several of his grinning fish.  

    The day was fun with a lot of laughs. Pity, the skipper, could not identify a winter whiting, oh well next time.  Here a few more pcs from the day.

    Ellicat Spits The Dummy

    What a funny day today. Went out with Ellicat again. In his spanking new boat. We hit up one of his spot Xs at Green (Island, not the green zone). Nothing was raised there so we decided to hit the Rainbow to see if there where any Mackeral still around. We settled in and I provided Ellicat with some grinner bait and within  few minutes he is onto a cracking fish, hmm well I should say a shovel nose ray 😄 Ellicat was not to upset at this stage so I provided him with another live bait. Again it did not take long and he was on again this time with some good runs and what seemed to be some head shakes. The fight quickly changed to a fight to keep the fish off the bottom. 😄 A solid battle ensued and up pops a Stingray. This is where Ellicat’s mood changed yelling at me to pull the anchor. A quick run back across the bay and we where back at the ramp. Lesson learnt I will not give him any live bait as he really is a Ray magnet and I am not talking Mr Kennedy. 😂😂👀👀
