G'day cid... Welcome to the forum. I agree, the weather right now hasn't been ideal. I went out today and didn't do to well either. Good job on the trevally and moses perch though, how'd they fight? Fishing in the rain, in my opinion is most effective around river mouths or surf beaches. So if you go there, I believe you will do better. A bit of logic behind this, the freshwater will wash them out around the mouth, and they will be hanging away from the dirty water and in the cleaner stuff. Cheers Hamish

Hi jon It looks like one to me Cheers Hamish

Hi all I know this probably won't be that interesting, but here's Brisbane River Session #6 So, I woke up and it was raining. I looked around for my Dad, but he had left to set up the Scout Sausage Sizzle we are having at Bunnings today. I slept back in for about another 20 minutes, then got up. I didn't find a raincoat, so I just went in my normal shirt. There was a bit of heavy rain at the start but after about 45 minutes the sun came out. While it was raining, in about 10 minutes of arrival, I took my first catfish on a piece of prawn. My second rod went off but I didn't get to it because I was dealing with the first one lol. I rebaited, this time with a shrimp, and in about 20-30 minutes, I was on again. After about ten seconds though, I knew it wasn't another catty. It was taking line, felt very heavy and not coming up. In the fight, about 40 seconds though, he rasped/bit through my 12lb mono leader *anger, disappointment, annoyed*. I felt the line while re-rigging, which is where I found out he rasped through it, which makes me think it was one of these three- -Threadfin Salmon -Pike -Freshwater Eel Whatever it was, it's got a hook in his mouth so if I re-catch him, I'll know who he is (hopefully it doesn't rust or get spat ) For the rest of the day, I had one more run, but didn't connect. It didn't feel big anyways. I did notice some interesting things though. Normally when I'm fishing for sharks (which was the primary target species) I've been fishing the run out. This time, it was rising all morning and one of the highest tides I've ever seen. While I was watching the lines, I did see a big jump/bust up on the other side of the river, it was silver, so either a shark, salmon or big catty. While I had my line in the channel made in between the jetty and bank as well, I saw a catfish do a big boof on the mangrove too, it gave me a fright but at least I knew they were there. After that, I fished for about another half hour, but I left when my Dad came down and when it started to heat up. Here are the statistics too: Statistics of Trip Fish caught: Catfish x 1, big bust off Baits used: Prawns, Shrimp, Mullet Tide: Rising, .1 low, 4:00AM, 2.6m high, 10:40AM Moon Phase: Over 50% but not quite full Tackle: 14lb braid mainline, 12lb mono leader, 20lb fluorocarbon leader, 30lb braid mainline, 80lb mono leader, 80lb Halco wire trace 40-50cm Weather: 26c, 83% humidity, rain, cloudy Bait Caught: - Overall Success: Target species were not caught, but it was still nice to get out for a fish I hope you enjoyed the report, sorry there are no photos but I caught nothing worthy Cheers Hamish

That's true, I reckon there will be at least one report somewhere of some guy driving his jetski to fast and crashing it. Cheers Hamish

Hey GregOug Yeah, that would be true. At least it will stop all the jetskis speeding 100 Km/h past all the landbased spots around Cheers Hamish

Hi GregOug Thanks for that, it's some good advice. I was thinking to go to Nudgee for a flick with some SP's this weekend, but we have a Scout Sausage Sizzle on so I've got to do that. I might get out next weekend though, otherwise if I do this weekend, it will be somewhere close. Cheers Hamish

Hi JMBfishingAus I reckon it could be an Alvey reel, like ellicat said, though it is hard to tell from the rust. It also could be a fly reel, like Junky said. Maybe ask a reel collector/repairer and they might know something about it and identify it. Cheers Hamish

Hi kmcrosby78 Is that the equivalent of about 12 bottles of Fanta for me? Cheers Hamish
-
Wow, that's crazy as. Is there an island they might've camped at? Cheers Hamish
-
Ok, looks like I've got some time on my hands before I'm as good as you at filleting
-
Yeah, you must be going that far out and it wouldn't be pleasant in a small boat in rough weather offshore. Cheers Hamish
-
Geez it probably would've taken me ten You must be getting quicker and quicker at cleaning them every time you catch some Cheers Hamish
-
Hi tugger That sounds like a lot of fun, and good to hear everyone in your family is going to have a feed of reefies for so long Cheers Hamish
-
Hi Breaming with Bro I'm pretty sure reefies don't swim off well and if they did they'd probably get sharked. That's why he stopped when he hit his bag limit, because if he caught any more it would be like suicide... or that's what I think anyway, I'm sure tugger will be able to confirm As well as that, they are some of the best tasting fish in the sea lol. Cheers Hamish

Hi tugger That is some great fishing, and some quality reefies too. Nice to see a good feed being pulled up too How long does it take to clean all of them The maximum amount of fish I've cleaned is about 7 and I was only helping, I couldn't imagine doing 40+ lol. Cheers Hamish

new south wales Went Fishing This Arvo At The River
AUS-BNE-FISHO replied to Brodie_S's topic in Saltwater
Hi Breaming with Bro Good to see some nice fish coming, I'd be very happy if I scored a bream and 4 flatties on lures in under an hour. Like kmcrosby78 said, flathead do have a very raspy mouth, so if I were you I'd be going with 10lb leader. Maybe up or down it depending on how the area is fishing. You are off to a good start, and fishing in rivers like that you'd probably have the chance of big bream, cod, whiting and if you are super lucky a little jewie (I'm dreaming lol). Cheers Hamish -
Hey Junky Thanks for the tips, I will try with some of my lower quality hardbodies and make them swim a bit better Cheers Hamish
