Went out to the fads on friday, just took some time to write a report.  Got to the ramp at about 5:40 and headed out to get some livies.  picked up about 12 in about 30 minutes so headed out, on the way out we ran over a huge bomby and put a mark on it (Foreshadowing) and continuted out to the Fad 6.  after bludging out way through the swell we finally had it in sight, and what do you know there is a massive school of mahi mahi.  The rush to put out a live bait resulted in a circle hook through my thumb that was not fun to pull out as it went well past the barb in but we carried on. after about 1 hour of not catching we hooked one on a subiki on a 2-4kg bream raider.  then it was just fish after fish.  we boated about 9 or 10 and kept 5 for a good feed.  on the way back in we stopped back the the big bomby we ran over, dropped a squidtrex down on it (about 50 or so metres) and after a few drifts and a couple coral trout (undersize), i hit a brick wall, about 25 metres down on a fast jig up, it took off, peeling line and heading to the bottom, i put the hurt on it with my saltiga and grappler combo and got it to the surface where it took off about 100-150 metres across the surface; after about 10-15 minutes dad gaffed the mighty cobia, it ended up going just over a metre and 8kg.  we decided to take it but relised that we had taken a bit to much fish so off to my mates house to drop off 2 dollies, (gave them to this mate because he and his family really apreciates fish and respects it).  got some really nice fillets of them, all of the dollies were 60-70cm
cheers (I'll add photos when its working again)

I use Mustad Fustach Clips if I'm switching lures a lot, I find them brilliant.
But for soft plastics I only use a loop knot.
I also only join my leader to braid with the FG knot, never a swivel.

Got some good weather today , so a friend and I headed out about 60km in search of some red fish. We’ saw  plenty of whales dolphins, sharks, turtles and sea snakes on the way out. We  pulled up on an old mark that I found years ago  in 12m of water and float lined some big flesh baits of hussar and iodine bream down on 40lb braid  . First drop I pulled a nice trout then it went a bit slow , we moved a little and  found some really fired up fish  that wanted to see the inside my ice box  .Ended up with a great box of fish , mainly common trout , with a few RTE’s , red emperor , and  venus tuskfish thrown in . On the way home we went over a rock that looked like it had Spanish mackerel  all over it  , so we spun around , and trolled a yakka over it - next thing you know I’ve  got a 15 kg Spanish in the kill tank and off we go again . .Fish are now well iced down ,  I’ll fillet ,skin and cryovac them down tomorrow once they harden up  and my old body recovers.I’m going to try some of those deep fried trout skin chips , I’ll post the verdict on those in a few days.

Had a bit of a break in the wind today , so went out about  4 km .
After about an hour of sounding we found what appeared to be a wreck  and plucked a feed off it .
Then pulled  a little cobe off a whale on the way home.
Tuesday and Wednesday are looking good so hopefully we’ll get  some good fish out wider.

Tuna are fish reacted to Big J in i'm a new fisherman on lord howe island
Evolution is the right word. Also, the reason I asked is because all the boats here look like this

and I think they are a waste of time to use because all the locals here inherited their boats as the old people who can afford them are dead sadly... the population of my little burb (suburb) is under 20 with the exception of me (Male) 42. My budget is $330,000 (I used to work for a tech giant).

    Needed help? Appreciate it.

    Signing off, Big J!

Tuna are fish reacted to MattInOz in quick update, and another question or two
Hey guys... it's been a while so here's a quick update. The boat now has new floors, and a second pair of (removable) seats in the aft with the front ones replaced with Quintrex seats on posts that fit in the standard spigots (thanks much to Ellicat), and built in battery box and rope locker in the stern. Have got the engine running nicely (it was stalling and farting on idle previously - new plug leads and richen the idle mixture a bit fixed that), and I've fully rewired it and put in a dual battery system with an Auto Charge Relay so I don't have to think about which battery I'm switched to. Got my boat licence (thanks to Stephen at AllState boat licencing... had fun), and passed my Short Range Radio Operator's course... just waiting for the radio licence in the mail now. There's a minor leak but I think I've located it so either some JB Weld or actual welding will fix that and need to get one of the ribs that hold the floor in place rewelded, and I think I need the trim ram rebuilt as it won't trim up under power... then I'm about ready to start actually using it. I've had it in the river a few times... did a quick blast from Fig Tree Pocket to UQ and back, runs nicely. It's smokey when you first start it, but it's a 2 stroke so that's normal.
I've also bought a new trailer for it (Stonegate Trailers) since the old one was made of swiss cheese and rust, which I'm reasonably happy with. Took the boat to the local ramp and put it in the water yesterday to swap trailers (amongst other things)... took me and a friend about an hour and a bit to adjust the new trailer to suit the boat and I reckon it's pretty close... maybe just need the boat an inch or two forward for a bit more tongue weight as it's clunking around a little under tow.
This leads me to my next question (well, two really) however... the old trailer had tie down points on the sides and a strap across the gunnels but the new one has them right at the rear, looks like they're intended for boats with mounting points on the transom which of course mine doesn't have. I could get some loops welded to the trailer of course but that'll stuff up the hot gal dip so I'd prefer a bolt on solution. I found a mob in Victoria selling these "Bolt on tie down bracket suits 75mm x 50mm" (I'll attach  a pic) that look like they'll work but my trailer box section is only 70 x 50. Is the extra 5mm going to be a problem? Should I pad out the difference with some rubber, or plate steel, or something?
Next question... the old trailer had a bracket on the rearmost crossmember for an outboard support strut... but the new trailer's rear cross member doesn't go all the way across... it has a gap in the centre (for outboards, inboards, stern drives etc I assume). I could put a strut bracket on the next crossmember up but that's about a meter in and I'd need to get the support lengthened and possibly curved and it would be a pain to get on/off. Do I actually NEED to use a support strut on the outboard? Is there another option such as supporting it from the engine mounts on the transom etc? I'll try to attach a pic of the rear of the trailer too.
    Thanks guys
    Matt

Tuna are fish reacted to Neil Stratford in I can feel a sand crab sandwich coming on.
The Wife and I put the boat in at Ray Bay at 4pm  on Sunday afternoon .Just a breath of wind  with a slight shimmy on the surface of the bay.
Surprisingly there wasn’t too many boats at the ramp. The snapper closure must  have kept a lot of people at home.
We had all the pots pre baited, and half of them fully assembled  before hitting the water so it only took about 40 minutes and we’d set all  8 pots and were back at the ramp .
Whilst giving the boat and trailer a wash , we heard about a pod of humpbacks out near Harries - pity I would have taken time out to go whale watching.
Anyways ,Went back this morning , launched at Raby Bay again , this time the bay was like a sheet of glass - glorious day !
Pulled the pots in quick time and went home with 20 nice full sandies.
So for the next few days we’ll be feasting out on the back patio on a few ginger beers and sand crab sandwiches …… someone’s got to do it !!!

was just having a think, possibly an air lock in the fuel line?? Maybe if i take the clamp and fitting off and pump fuel through i might be able to get it out if thats the issue. Filter seems unlikely seeing as it was just recently serviced and replaced.

I swapped years ago when I started casting plastics and lures more.
The reason being, and I learnt from the pros, is that you cast the rod out with your right hand, why swap to left to retrieve?
If the fish are surface feeding, you could possibly get a hookup when that lure hits the water and you're swapping the rod to the left hand.
That little amount of time for swapping over is all it takes for a jack to reach his snag and bust you off,and that was happening to me.

Another situation is casting at oyster ridden rocks.
I can cast, hit water, and be retrieving straight away, keeping the plastic just above the rocks.
If I'm swapping, the plastic sinks, finds a nice oyster shell to lodge itself in and you're now snagged.

Horses for courses but that's the only way I fish now.
