  1. @AUS-BNE-FISHO nails it. You don't need heavy gear to land big flathead, just patience. 8lb braid is plenty but it definitely adds some security to use heavier leader if teeth and gill rakers come in contact. I'd go 20lb, but more often than not the 14lb would be fine too.
  2. Possibly a different case, but yes there was a group of students staying on Straddie who kayaked from dunwich to peel. The conditions were poor on the way back and 3 were found by the water taxi. 2 became lost overnight and unfortunately one of them was found in the Rous channel deceased the next morning.
  3. Mate that was a great report! Successful day and good times had by all it seems. Nice fish @Kat ! And @ellicat hahaha I actually thought the first pic of you holding the mackerel you had 2 ciggies... one in the mouth and the other between your fingers (But alas, mackerel fin)
  4. Would be an absolute mission from the mainland though especially if weather turned bad!
  5. Yeah mate! Most of the beach allowed camping it looked like. Cost me $6 for the night, print out tag and stick on tent I have the suitable gear to fit in the yak I guess; got the hiking camping setup so it all fits in a backpack normally anyway
  6. Too right Norm! Haha a couple of years ago for me also, I understand off the booze these days
  7. Yewwwwwwwww Haha that bugs me too and I'm probs part of that generation
  8. A couple of spare days and good weather lined up so I packed up the yak with camping gear and paddled to peel island for an overnighter; a trip I've had in mind for a while. After loading the tent, bedding and a plethora of the usual camping utensils I had room left for approximately 2 potatoes (and of course I had enough space for a coffee grinder and filter setup). The plan was to catch a fish for dinner or go hungry. Upon arrival and setting up camp I had a much needed nap, followed by a sleepy trudge across the flats with a fishing rod in hand. Second cast in I got a nice flathead for dinner. That was a bit easy for a change A chilled afternoon and early nights sleep was had, and a beautiful glassed out paddle home this morning at dawn. No more fish to report
  9. Oh yep, I think I saw the note of 50lb braid and missed that it was a 25k saragosa. As Kelvin said go at least 80lb... those 20-25k size reels are often spooled with 100lb braid and 180lb to 220lb mono shock leader for GT topwater fishing
  10. Exactly. It was about 45cm so 1 fillet a meal, with a side of carrots and broccolini from the garden
  11. Definitely has slow days! Just pan fried yum
  12. Hey Robbie, Looks like you got the lower water column reef stuff covered. How about a popping/stickbaiting setup? Would be your best and most fun option for big GT and Spanish I'd say. Can't beat topwater imo
  13. @GregOug did you actually sleep in that thing when you first got it? I would. So nice
  14. Can erect umbrella if needed. Would you offer more? $600 is a bit beneath this vessel.
  15. Gotta do the same, keep putting it off. I've always done the minor servicing like general grease and oil and drag washers but I think this reel is a bit more cooked
  16. I reckon it's been 8 sessions and 3 weeks since catching a fish. Sometimes it's easy sometimes it's hard! Makes the good times seem more memorable and exciting. I can't believe 3 weeks ago I was so sick of catching tailor every cast that I took the hooks off a popper to watch them attack it and now not a single bite for weeks. Today I planned to go kayaking but the swell wasn't very nice, so went landbased instead. Got a lone trevally for lunch (delicious) and that was it. Tomorrow
  17. Was ready to kayak first thing this morning but arrived to find the swell to be a little big for my liking. I am soft and precious
  18. Yeah floating out livies whilst bottom bashing for snapper seems productive, what I've done a bit with my neighbour anyway. Summer seems to be more trolling focussed but to be honest that's when I like to bring out the surface lures instead and get that exciting topwater action
  19. I think November December but not really sure! This is my first start of season experience since living here so I'll let you know large winter Spanish have been regular catches by locals til the last few weeks, hopefully after the next southerly the Coriolis effect will bring some numbers of the school sized Spanish back to play again
  20. Amazing. Thanks for sharing. That's what fishing is all about!! Actually really good effort to get a couple of fish the first time you used lures. It takes many people a lot of tries to catch their first fish on lure! Well done, happy for you. Nothing wrong with that lure for your first one, it obviously works!
  21. Corroded bearing maybe. Saragosa 5000 is like that for me currently due to a few dunkings.
  22. Hey mate, heaps of whales around at the moment and in close too. Not sure about having that much line out, would hate to tangle one. Was kayaking off cylinder beach the other day and got passed by 8 in an hour. Its been a bit quiet of late, some kings around but not too many catches. Kinda in between seasons here. Tailor in numbers have moved on, GTs gone quiet. Always Spanish around but has been quiet with that too. Things will kick off a bit soon I hope.
  23. Great report Hamish, and a wonderful little taste of the bay! Been kayaking for snapper yet? Ripper looking boat mate far out! @GregOug Hope you had a good time @Kat! Awesome to get some fish too
