  1. Hey everyone! Just an update. It's been a while since I've drifted onto here, but it crossed my mind. Plenty of familiar members and many new ones it seems! What a community. Anyways I work for QFES now at straddie part time after over a year of training and study, and also a barista on the side. This leaves lots of spare time for fishing and gardening (I try to be self sufficient with about half of my meals). To aid in this I've purchased a brand new offshore kayak weapon! Coulda bought a boat with that money but it falls into place with my sustainability project; I can go out for free if I'm hungry A few pics from recent times
  2. Excited for you mate. Have a great trip and catch up when you're back
  3. I had 50 4st yammy too. Could have even done with a transom fiddle to re rate to 60hp max. Was sometimes a tad sluggish to get going especially in the rough, 2 stroke would have been fine but who wants that they are very solid hulls. Cool to know the hydrofoil works for you. I liked the tiller steer, so much room, but my shoulder didn't when I did 150km round trips in the bay looking for tuna
  4. Are their scales harder to penetrate? Sorry for dumb question haha. I can't help you!
  5. Yep +1 for ellicats suggestion. Also seen reef anchor style spikes (outward facing) attached to a rope work very well. Not even that sharp, they spike through easier than expected with not much dcking around. Saw it in action at Hervey bay pier last time I was there
  6. Awesome stuff mate, love it. Also you bought the best 4.2m tinny in existence haha
  7. Thanks boys, I appreciate the support!
  8. Hi everyone, I went on a fishing trip with a mate and his boat over the weekend. We camped at Maaroom and fished the awesome estuary-like system (not sure if it is actually an estuary or not?) that is the great sandy straits. I've only fished the system once or twice and haven't done very well, however Murray has had several trips there and had success, mostly targeting flathead. Fishing the corners and creek mouths of the little islands seemed to be the go. The current did some funny things in those spots and that's where the fish were. Overall we actually had a pretty poor trip on flathead with only 4 barely legals. Murray usually gets a couple of big girls each trip up there. Not to worry, it didn't take me long to throw around a halco roosta to see what else could be around. I got a hit from a massive golden trevally which is less common on surface lures, so that really got the blood pumping. Followed by catching half a dozen 40-60cm Giant Trevally which was obviously a lot of fun. Queenies came to the party and Murray got his first little fella for the trip. I got a few also, the biggest shy of a metre Throwing around surface lures was a great way to break up the monotony of a pretty poor flathead session. We came across queenfish again in a bay at low tide where all the water (and fish) drains into from the flats. It was a feeding frenzy with queenfish jumping around everywhere! We caught some more with 4 of them over 90cm, on 25lb gear and 10lb gear. So overall it was a great trjp. One of the highlights being I hooked my first barramundi. It was 80cm odd, but was snipped off when it went for it's aerial show. Thanks for reading and sorry we only bothered with a couple of photos!
  9. Likewise haha, a quick glance was all I could handle. It looks like green zone size increases to existing ones in some parts, which is better than creating new ones I reckon. But whatever, will wait for mapping and a more concise overview
  10. I'm all for fish conservation to ensure sustainability with current greenzones and reducing bag limits (and if too conservative then it just means more fish to catch yay). But this 120 day thing seems really odd
  11. Jeez, i hope the homies use snorkels so you can see them
  12. That's awesome and good tips. Love the last photo
  13. Been up to caloundra a few times leaving from scarborough or bribie. It's a pleasant trip. And yes the fishing can really turn on up there. Patches of coffee rock and weed always worth checking out, brays rock too. And I'm sure there's more to check out as you keep going out further too. Unaware of these containers, when did that happen?!
  14. Thanks Brian and Kelvin, it's nice to find you guys still active in the community
  15. Thanks Robbie, I'm glad it's all being put to good use! I think I might just take you up on that at some point
  16. Nice one Wayne! Saw it when it popped up on YouTube cos I'm your number 1 fan
  17. Hello all, Long time no post! I've been through a couple of years fishing hiatus, life hiatus really, due to health problems. I've lost the obsessive nature and passion I used to have with fishing but I'm happy to be involving myself every month or two in a fishing trip! And enjoying it which is the main thing. Unlike other sports such as golf I was pleased to discover that I haven't 'lost it'. It was great to find that fishing is an activity once you learn it you can't unlearn it, maybe just brush up on the basics and wrack the memory and you're good to pick up where you left off. Last month with a mate in his boat (I am now boatless and only have 2 rods and reels and hardly any lures! The true minimalist fisho) we headed out into the bay in search of tuna. From past years, the first of the westerly winds brings them in close to the western bay shore. And sure enough we found them within 5 minutes of looking. Successful day hooking up to 6 and boating 3 or 4, I can't remember. I don't really bother with photos much anymore but here's a couple of little cuties around 1m from a double hookup. I literally own 2 types of plastics and 1 stickbait which has actually made it a cool experience. I used to be so caught up wondering which of my 7836 lures to put on next and wasting time doing so. In the end sticking with something that has been proven in the past and keeping it in the water is what caught the fish. Funny that. This morning myself and Murray (same mate) went out in search of snapper in the shallows which was a bucket list item for him. Conditions were too still but I'm really glad he got one at 47cm, he has massive hands haha. That was about it aside from a couple of squid. Thanks guys! And hello to all of you I know and those of you I don't, I hope everyone is going well
  18. As long as its made clear to the decky what they need to provide, then yeah I agree
  19. I literally did nothing, but thanks Was great to meet a few members in person at last, cheers to all for organising.
  20. @Luvit You always forget about your disabled gluten intolerant friend over here... Pies and rolls are a no go And yes I know you will say "its not all about you" so there, I beat you to it Looking forward to it! Unfortunately I don't have a BBQ to provide.
  21. Keep it 8' or close to it I reckon! Having that little extra casting distance from a longer rod can be the difference between a fish or not sometimes. Once fighting the fish under the boat you will curse long rods, but at least you got the hookup and that's all that matters
