    Fish with a story.
Just prior to this GT  I lost a 17 kg Mac rite at the boat after a half hr fight on 20 lb braid on lite spin gear (pfleuger arbor and 4-6 kg daiwa rod) I was flicking Z MAN Diezel mood ring 3 inch. They go well usually, Esp if you paint the tail yellow.
So nuffing for another half hour. I was pushing for time as the ramp I use is mud bank at 1 mtr of tide.
So what happens as im ripping the lure in to get goin it takes off 10 ft from the boat and i saw a silver flash giving me hope. . 20 seconds later the spool is half empty. Thinking possibly another big mac I threw the anchor, Started the motor and gave chase. Half an hour into it i figured possibly a big trevally. I couldnt bring myself to cut him off so I chased and chased and chased. He sat 5 mtrs off the bottom the whole fight as each time i went over him thats where he was on the sounder.
An hour and a half later and a couple of miles (see track) he finaly gave up. So I dragged him in and took a quick selfie. Not a bad fish EST 30 kg on 20 lb braid (suffix) plus as that eski is 1.2 mtrs long. Then let him go.
Then I gunned it back to my anchor float and retrieved it.
Then the heavens opened up... absolutely pelted down and had a 6 mile run strait into it in an open tinny. Not fun
Remember the tide issue... well the prediction was right. I got back to ramp, Well 30 mtrs from it. Jumped out and dragged myself thru the mud well up to my ass. Drove the ute down, Ran out the 4wd winch back to the tinny so another treck thru the mud up to my ass.  Then back thru the mud to the ramp again. Winched the boat across the mud.. Spun the ute around and winched the boat on. Not wanting to filthy up the Family car I sat on the car cover luckily stashed in the tray.
Then got home to... you all know this one..   "where you been, you were meant to be home 3 hrs ago"...
Well you will never believe this story so I atleast had a picture to prove my lateness... HHHhaaa

Pfleugar arbor( killer reel, so many good fish, Punch above there weight) not over expensive either and cast a mile.
ZMAN diezel 3 inch moodring. Killer lure. Unbreakable
20 lb suffix braid. well cant fault it.
40 lb flurocarbon joined to 3 inches of single wire in front of lure with albrite knot.
    Flurocarbon to braid FG knot.

Been doing a bit of this lately. Trolling paravanes for macs. I love em. 45$
So much easier than downrigging and quiet cheap. I use a small one
about 3 oz size. Clipped strait onto my TLD 25 with 15 kg line. 90 lb trace before and after planer.
Been trolling live chubb trevally (a small yellowtail trevally thing) 2-3 kts. you could troll gars etc but these livies work for me.
Troll the bait about 8 ft behind the paravane. Trolling the bait around 10 mtrs down.
They are awesome because as soon as the fish hits the paravane trips and its like fighting a normal rig but with 8 ft of trace. The only issue is if its a decent size bait or lure the paravane will trip easy. So i tie a light rubber band on mine to stop the ring sliding without a decent strike.
I got this one on it. And the next bait lost one half as big again rite at the boat after a half hour fight and near a mile chase. 1/2 spooled the TLD so I had to chase him. Estimated 30-35 kg. So I would have let go anyway due to cigutera potential.
The one pictured is EST 20 kg.
And before you ask that thing on my head is my face wrap.. HAHA
So paravanes I can fully recommend. you could drag them on any braid or mono combo so long as it is reasonably heavy as they create alot of drag until they trip.

    Product: Pflueger Arbor
    Type: Spinning reel
Colour Range: One size i think but its all you need
    Preferred Colour Thus Far: NA
    Price: 80$US
Quality: GOOD however the paint coating corrodes off if not well cleaned and inox sprayed when left.
Action: Fast spinning real that casts helllll far with small lures
Experience: Over sized line spool, They look odd but man can you fire a steel lure. Even tiny ones when the tuna are eating neon tetra sized bait and spook on aproach. You dont need to get as close with these reels firing out the steel lures.
Not the fastest ratio but with the large line spool dosnt matter retrieves quick. Good for soft plastics as big cast ability.
I have 2.one is 6 years old and been Flogged. but still casts and winds no problem, drags still good. has caught countles mackeral 4 kg schoolies and spotties and a few up to 10 kg.
barra, trout, Whatever.. I love it. and for 100$ Aussie cant complain. And you get 2 spools. one 20 lb braid. the other 30lb braid covers all.
    Pictures: Optional...

Well looks like everyones stumped. So I did alot of googling. The closest resemblance I could find was a Bigeye cigarfish aka Evermanns Nomeid Ariomma brevimanum . Apparently a type of drift fish that hangs around floating debris, jellyfish. Once mature hangs in the deep 600 - 1000ft. Then shallower of a night. Apperntly eats salps and plankton. (and squid as i found). They have been caught around Hawaii , cook islands, Phillipines.. I guess where ever the currents take them and the water seems warm.
Well there you go. Doubt il ever see another.

let shovels go. Like eating sawdust.. U must be hard up for a feed if your keeping them. The big bastard species from north qld are meant to be ok.. The little ones im assuming you caught(brown type) got bugger all meat on them.
Pike aka buzz saw whiting,, Mate they are the best live bait for king and jew. Eating wise they are ok/edible. Quite soft. Just fillet and fish and chip, or bbq and lemon and salt.

    56-65 pound.usualy does it..
however after a fish sometimes its curled.. or pigtails so replace then.
Also I found a few lures or rigs have just popped. May be due to rigs sitting for extended period and some salt on haywire twist section.
one just popped on a cast, the other on a reasonable fish but with no excessive weight on the rig,  beats me?
il just replace wire more often.

Caught a few small black tip reef/whaler type sharks the other day. An old greek fella showed me how to do them up years ago.
I did the same thing a few years later (today) and they turned out as good as any fish.
    Sharks were 1-1.3 mtrs size.
Once caught I donged them on the head and then cut their Gills with a knife (my preferred method of bleeding){see old post "dont cut fishes throats to bleed"} as well as cutting off their tail, Dorsal and pec fins. Then left in a bucket of water or tied over the side for 5 mins to bleed out.
next off with their head and guts and into the freezer or Ice slurry for 4-5 hours.
pull them out and fillet and skin. Chop the fillet into  10 cm pieces, then fillet the fillet. That means make each piece as thin as possible, say 1-2 cm thick. (roughly the dimensions of a piece of loaf bread)
Then put in a tray and soak in milk for 4-6 hours or over nite in a fridge. this will remove the iodine and ammonia taste/smell shark is known for.
When ready for eating they were rinsed off in water and then rolled in flour, salt, pepper etc and oil shallow pan fried.
.Turned out sensational and how i remember all those years ago when the old Greek fella gave me a few pointers. I have also used this meat for curries and it is great.
He taught me how to do BIG OCCY as well but another time/post.
So next time if your having a tough day and can only manage a few of the Razor Gang NOAHS, something to try..
    Good Luck.

I think they are a great product. just not as durable as i hoped or was told by someone on here.. But i am up against The most voracious brutal set of teeth out there.
Best looking and colours i have seen.  The jerk shadz swim brilliant and track true. The tail is tops. Cant wait til you got the yellow tails as split colour models. And that colour change as you pull them past the boat was brilliant. I used the bluey green sorts that day.
I realy liked the 4 inch jerk shadz. I will keep using them as I believe when the going was tough they did the job when others werent doing so.  I did have a fair few hits on them but failed to hook up or was bitten off. The small school macs devastate my gear and wire on jig heads is a must for me. I will keep on using them as you just KNOW they are the goods. I just went thru about 12 lures for 4 small fish. i didnt realy use the swimmers that day as the current was up but feel they will be good. Perhaps when not running too hard i can use a small jig head and give them a good burl.

    Keep up the good work.

Well gave those Gobblers a go,
man they look great in the water, Swim well, BUT unfortunately one bite from a mac and they have had it.
Small school mac tore em up in an instant. I will still give them a run and use on tough days as I think they are a truly good product in appearances and swimming etc but on days when the bite is OK i will go with longevity of ZMAN.
One criticism is the heads on the paddler style are quite narrow and I found it hard to put them on a 1/2 - 3/4 oz jighead grub holder. and they looked odd and not streamlined when profiled to the lead jig head, but thats me. I mainly used the jerk shad style as the current was rippin that day.

Caught a few school macs on them but it was a slow day overall.

Well bought 2 gobblerz kits. 4 inch shadz, and 4 inch paddle tails kits. Bout 100$ for a pretty good pile.
lets see how they fare up to the mackeral attacks vs Z man.
But if they catch just one 5-10 kg mac they have paid for themselves.
I think i will dip them in gulp juice as seems to work for me.

I see people are always cutting fishes throats to bleed them. By doing this they are actually cutting both sides of the pump and they wont properly bleed out. It does work to a degree BUT there is a better way that is more effective and il explain why.
Do the usual bat over the head to knock em out or brain spike. Then lift up the Gill plate and cut thru a whole set of gills on one side with either a knife or a set of snips, Whatever you have. Cut where the gills U curve the most (near their pectoral fin area). Then if your boat permits put the fish in the live bait tank or bucket of water , or for say a tuna strop rope their tail and hang over side for 5-10 mins to bleed out.. watch out for seals and sharks. After 5-10 mins then put your fish in the ice salt water slurry in  eski. Fish are best quality when left in icewater slurry for few hours to set before filleting.

By cutting their throats you are cutting both sides of the pump. (heart) It will keep beating but wont be causing any flow of blood.
BUT  By cutting the gills the heart keeps pumping for 5-10 mins and keeps sending the blood to the gills to be re oxygenated. Thus eventualy pumping nearly all the blood out through the cut gills.. By putting in water (not ice water) the blood wont congeal and allow a close to full bleed out. Head down if able. Then into eski.. This way they are also not rolling around in an eski of congealed blood to. yuk. Water/ice slurry will be a light red /pink
Next time you catch 2 of the same species, say king fish, or  spanish mackeral, Do the old throat cut on one and Gill cut on the other. Allow a full 10 min water bucket bleed out.  When you fillet compare the meat and it will become apparent the difference. The fish will also freeze alot better and taste better once defrosted. .Taste better in general especialy if you sashimi it.
Hope this helps someone. Especialy if you catch tailor.. but should realy be applied to any fish. Dunno how much better it could actually make Aussie Salmon though. Guess theres always room for improvement there.
And you get a better dead fish photo, no throat hanging out.

davostephens got a reaction from AxSeagull in Make Your Own Almost Indestructable Baitjig
I got sick of putting a baitjig over the side at 4$ a pop and then torn to shreds in seconds,,,so i thought there must be a better way.
I try to get a northern species of yakka, But when the school macs are around or down south, the bonito.. your jigs dont last too long.
So i made this. I use wire on mine due to school macs. The wire is then albrite knotted strait to mono 50 lb. I use 3 jigs on my  but im sure you could go more. I use heavy gear i guess for bait because once one mac or trevally hit usualy more do.  Anyway it may be of use to someone.
You need : some nylon filament.. The stuff that goes on woghead lures for Spanish macs. (Good tackle shops should have this)
                       Lumo sleeves
40lb single strand wire..  ( if your making yours no wire then you will need a thicker wire to put hole in nylon melt {see below}, then remove, then poke your mono thru)
Hooks and mono of choice.  a lighter too. and bit of braid.

1- pinch of filament, couple colours if desired.. then tie bit of braid around bunch and slide to within 1 cm of end of bunch.. the braid gathers it together to allow easier melting of mono filament strands.
2- Burn the end of the filament bunch to melt together.. Do a couple of times. and while still not hard poke a piece of wire thru the middle of the burnt glob of nylon. {make sure glob isnt to large that the lumo sleeve wont jam over,)
3- put hook on wire with haywire twist. I put twist around hook shank to shorten the distance.
4- trim a lumo sleeve to desired size and slide over melted glob, filament and hook end.. Draw eyes on with pernament texta if ur keen.
5 -trim filament to desired length
6 - make a rig with charter loop knots or alike. say 3 loops and 2 tag ends that one goes to swivel and other to sinker.
7 - Albrite wire to mono.
    and there u go..
If your not using wire just poke the wire thru the melted glob..put bit wd40 on wire so dosnt stick to melted nylon. then pull out wire once set, leaving a hole to poke ur mono thru and tie on hook.
In these i put about 5 cm wire for toothys. and a mix of bluey purple filament and whit filament.. i trimmed both ends of the lumo sleeve to about 2-3cm total. Trim filament tail to size reqd.. i make long to begin with as it is easier to handle and burn.
I reckon theyed make ok fly fishing thingys. Im not a fly fisho.
I used this one night and instead of a lead i had a lucanus jig as the weight. Just with the boat bobbing a 8 kg cobia took the lucanus..Because the whole rig was sound and well made i got the cobia.. Later i caught 3 small barracuda on the jig that i kept alive and on dawn they were turned into spanish mackeral. Daylight has seen plenty of school macs have a go at it.
anyway there easy enough to make.
If you do make some post a pic to see what else people come up with for bait jig material..
