queensland wivenhoe dam fishing

Going for the first time to wivenhoe as the MIL lives nearby and the wife will be there for hours. 

Never fished there (or freshwater) before, any tips. Any locations I should go (land based) don't mind getting into it to get to a good spot. 

Using lures and hoping for some bass or cod. 

Any tips besides throwing in the wind to get the lure further? 

Using a bait caster and have another egg beater as back up 

Any pest fish I should know about besides carp? 

Also going to throw a trap in for yabbies, I've heard red claws are a pest there, can anyone confirm and if so do I still have to throw back the egg carriers?

Check wivenhoe seq site for recent closures due to low levels and civil works for access, think billies bay is shut. From memory the red claw are native and noxious at the same time so I keep only the males, no size limit. Use shrimp or worms, if you can't find the bass you should at least find some catfish. Have fun!
