Pretty sure there’s a size limit on your font.

All jokes aside like Hamish said stick to a cast net.  Traps similar to your one are only used for bait collection in fresh water.

I was up in Cairns for work this week and the weather looked the goods. Having not fished for ages my colleague offered a sneaky after work session around a headland/bay. Well we hooked a bunch of good fish and only got 1 legal largemouth nanny, barred grunter and fingermark head past the sharks. The head itself weighed 2kg so it would’ve been a solid fish for me. We swabbed the shark bite for DNA analysis and I whipped out the otoliths (ear bones) so we could estimate the age. Will update this post when I have some details.
    cheers

Part of the enjoyment of fishing, especially for trophy fish like jacks, is cracking the code of where, when and how. Anyone who has nailed the jacks in that area has probably invested a lot of time and effort into cracking the code and is not likely to tell you to fish this lure, at this time of the tide, on this moon, at this location. Might not be many jacks there for much longer if they did. Some fish in some locations will have a very short bite time and your challenge, @Mylesfisher, is to figure out where when and how that works for jacks in the Nerang.
And when you do work it out after months or years of trying, don’t forget to let us all know the details. 🥵

Got out for an overnighter on the Sykes reef just east of Heron island. We had 2 boats and crew with perfect weather for the 2 days.
The 1st day we chipped away getting the odd coral trout, red throat emperor, tuskie and plenty of hussa. Anchoring on the western side of Sykes reef for the night both boats rafting up for dinner and a few drinks.
The 2nd day the fish chewed harder and I caught a couple of red emperor and a few more trout for the box. Other fish we got was moari cod, Moses perch, spangeled emperor and large trevally.
By lunch we had bagged out and it was time for a snorkel at Sykes. The other crew had never been into Fitzroy lagoon so we stopped there for another snorkel before heading home. Another top trip weather wise with the bonus of the best fish Nth Queensland can produce for us to take home.

    Hi all
i have recently started targeting some brisbane river bullsharks near my home in Bulimba as it is starting to warm up again. I had some success on Sunday when I caught a nice 84cm pup (which I was pretty pleased with). I finished school early today and thought I might try and catch a few more. I sent out some fairly small slabs of eel and a big eel head on my bigger spin rod. After waiting for around an hour I started getting some small taps on my bigger spin gear and didn’t think much of it so I waited for about 10 minutes. All of a sudden it springs into life and takes a slow run, so I flick over my bait runner and hold on. To my surprise my it shoots off taking a run lasting around 30 seconds on tight drag. It takes me 15-20 minutes to finally get it to shore and it turns out to be a 207cm behemoth off a bullshark. I sent it’s two remoras back into the river and managed to dehook it and it released (after some coaxing) back to its home safely.
For context I am 6,3 so it looks small😂

After this Arvos success at shark fishing I thought I might try my hand at some salmon fishing. I netted some big prawns and set the rods out. I managed to get a nice 95cm threadie that had pretty bad barotrauma and was hooked in the gills so he came home for dinner. I will take a picture of it next to something green when I fillet it tomorrow morning, so look out northsiders😂.

    Morning all,
The jack addiction has well and truly kicked in again now the weathers getting warmer.
Managed to get out for an afternoon flick using soft plastics and hard body lures. Picked up a few flathead bycatch but not much action for most the afternoon.
I had pretty much given up any hope of a jack and was about to pack it in and thought I'd throw a couple of casts under the bridge next to where my car was parked and hook up to a nice 43cm jack.
I was lucky it ran away from the closest bridge pylon heading towards the pylon on the other side which gave me a couple of seconds to turn its head.
Hooking up close to the pylons usually end for me in a split second, you feel the hit and by the time I've lifted the rod back its all over with a snapped leader wrapped around the oysters on the pylon.
And if you can't turn them quick with a tight drag, they usually drag me and the kayak into the bridge pylon within a few seconds.
You can see in the vid, in only the few seconds till I got it's head up it had almost dragged my kayak into the bridge.
They are such a strong aggressive fish.
Sorry for the over excitement in the vid when I get it in the net🤣, just couldn't believe I hooked one when I'd thought the day was over.

Just had a look at charters in Strahan on the West coast. Looks like there is only harbour and river fishing. Population is pretty sparse on the west coast, so might be a bit tough to find somewhere/someone.

nice session there Hamish well done. I also refer to those fish as sole. We used to catch them as kids as far up the river as colleges crossing during times of severe drought I even had a few in my native fish tank for a while when I was a kid

Both fish did taste particularly good - and all I had to do was eat what was served up since Hamish cleaned and cooked them . A better start to the school holidays than usual!  Fingers crossed they keep biting!
