i got a shimano sennia combo for 110, it came with a 2-3kg rod and a 2500 reel. it was a few years ago that i got it and it is awesome, ive caught jewfish, thredfin, kingfish, snapper, flathead and even tuna on it, it is hard to grow out of when it is good for everything. i would suggest it as a good rod for him, and if he ends up not liking fishing, its all yours

doesn't matter if you catch one or not, you seem like your having lots of fun just trying and catching bycatch. and thats why i go fishing, not just for a feed but for fun.

i am defienly no expert but i have caught quite a few up in karoomba, some of the people staying next to us went on the charter and they told us that the best way to catch them is to use a size 4 - 5 hook and put on a piece of shark then prawn. idk why this order but if they did anything else they did not catch, they mainly targeted thredfin and caught around 20 size ones in an hour so it works quite well.

the fact that you said never suctioned to the bottom rules out the classic stingray. the fact that it was a canal could point towards a big Jewfish, or even a eel, i have caught countless down near mission point at sunset, they put up a good fight. Just a few questions to help identify it, was it staying near the surface or the bottom, how deep was the area you were fishing and were there and frays in the line pointing towards teeth or anything like slime on the line the could indicate it was an eel

ok, first thing, what is the seaway (not joking). also why would you sell the 3.5 would it not be better to chuck a 6hp or something on it, it would get you further, but as said before, it is not very safe even on a good day unless you plan everything, such as when the tide is going out the current will change and make it harder to come back in, so if you are going to go make sure you time it. and keep safe

If you want to find a good car for towing and "for the mall" you should look at a Nissan X-trail. -

i would say have a good go with a small metal slug, cant hurt to try and i am no expert but i think the mulloway (jewfish) are more active after rain (correct me if im mistaken) Should be fun, good luck with it. -
Bleach and other chemicals, it will clean them good but you waders might melt then in the process

queensland baitcasterz for jacks
Tuna are fish replied to Mylesfisher's topic in Tackle, Rods and Reels
what i use to do 9 years ago when i was 5 or 6 i use to cut the head off of fresh squid and put a whole pilchard in the hood, have a sliding sinker and a sliding hook with one tied at the bottom, for big snapper it was great. (that was in New Zealand not sure how it will work here.) Edit: Sorry did not see the same thing above -
Is a Baitrunner Really Worth It?
Tuna are fish replied to AUS-BNE-FISHO's topic in Tackle, Rods and Reels
Back when i lived in NZ, bait runners were epic, you could just float a pilchard down a burly trail and catch snapper by the dozen. it is also great for live baiting as you can have the drag loose and the tighten it with the flick of the switch, for live baiting as you said you will be mainly using it for i would say go for it. Both look like good reels. -
Offshore Kayak rod suggestions (Telescopic?)
Tuna are fish replied to longhairedwahoo's topic in Tackle, Rods and Reels
Personally i use a Shimano barra raider for mackerel and tuna, it is 2 piece (dont know the exact size) with a Shimano Sedona 4000 spooled with 30Ip Braid and Mono leader. i use it in my kayak in the estuary and lakes and it works really well. i would suggest going with something like that. -
Sperm whale and orca (while it is technically a dolphin i think it counts)

Yeah, but the fact that they can't be recycled sucks, surely they could be used for something else.

Thats the earliest , 7 - 8 years ago when i lived in NZ dad and i would get up at 3:00am once even 2:30am. i was only 5 - 7 years old at the time.

The blades don't actuality last that long, and since they are carbon fiber the can not be recycled and go to land fill.

You could look for a second hand bar crusher or yellow fin
-
Or you could stream the cricket while fishing
