Luvit reacted to kmcrosby78 in Its Just A Fad
Exactly what I was thinking Robbie. Instead of spending money to create FAD's to encourage dolphinfish, etc to take pressure off snapper, how about spending money on creating structure that will benefit snapper ........... 🤔 I reckon we could create some decent reefs with $1 million ......... 🙂

outh-East Queensland fishers are set to reel in a bigger catch with the installation of fish aggregation devices along the Sunshine and Gold Coasts and in Moreton Bay.
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said devices, called FADs, were a floating buoy that gets tethered offshore and attracts fish.
“We’re investing $1 million in rolling out a series of FADs that will attract sports fish species including Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish), cobia and mackerel,“ Mr Furner said.
“The added benefit of making it more likely that you’ll hook one of these species is that it takes some of the pressure off snapper and pearl perch, which are currently overfished and stocks are very low.
“Over the next year we’ll be developing a design and installation plan for the FADs in consultation with stakeholders. A FAD monitoring and maintenance program will also be developed.“
Member for Lytton Joan Pease said enhancing the fishing experience in Moreton Bay was good for fishers and for local jobs.
“For many people fishing is an important part of Bayside lifestyle, but it also drives more visitors to our region and that creates jobs,“ Ms Pease said.
“This is a great initiative because it will enhance our reputation as a great place ot drop in a line, and that means more jobs in businesses servicing those visitors.
“We are investing in jobs today and for the future, and delivering infrastructure for our state.“
Mr Furner said the State Government would also be exploring oppportunties with potential partners who may be interested in matching funding to roll out even more FADs in South East Queensland or more widely.
“NSW Fisheries has already demonstrated success with FADS installed along its it east coast, which attract large numbers of dolphin fish,“ Mr Furner said.
“We believe that this initiative will help to strengthen world class recreational fishing in Queensland while giving snapper and pearl perch an opportunity to rebuild stocks.
“By encouraging recreational fishers to target species other than snapper and pearl perch, we can ensure that our kids and grandkids will be able to enjoy fishing for these iconic Queensland species in future.“

A break from it all, is still a break.
Magnificent country we live in.
It's an excuse to go away again when there is more water about.

Luvit reacted to Panther in Patchy Sesh. Land Based Redcliffe Report
Went for a land based session with a mate yesterday evening in Redcliffe. Had to take advantage of the weather, wind and tide. Would have taken the tinnie out but with a curfew placed on my mate we had to maximize fishing time.
Within 10 minutes of arriving I had missed a run and then my mate reeled in a decent 40cm Tailor. We got our hopes up for a solid Tailor session.
What actually followed was an on/off patchy bite of mainly flathead. The best two going mid fifties. Nice and plump fish but the laziest fighters I have ever come across!
Bait was a mix of prawns and pilchards. Hope more Tailor arrive in the bay soon.

So we busted out of Brisbane starting at 3.50am. First stop at Warwick for a Zarraffa's coffee. Mmmm.
We meandered our way to Bingara where we took a look at some camping spots on the Gwydir River. They looked good and the river had some water, but Dan's girl Zoe was with us and at this point Dan wasn't keen on sharing a self dug toilet between the 3 of us. So off to Warrabah it was.
Thanks to a text from the wife we knew we'd left the butter behind so stopped at Manilla IGA where it cost me $16 for two tubs. Manilla describes its town as "The Fishermans Paradise". Manilla is on the "mighty"Namoi River.
They didn't mention that they also had to add water. There was not much about with only 2 waterholes having a shallow expanse of water in Warrabah National Park. Nevertheless we all cast out lures around for practice sake. I even managed to lose a top water frog when I gave it a real hoick at a decent looking snag. Unfortunately the loop was worn from casting and my frog disappeared into a lush bit of long grass the same colour as the frog.
Gooonne !
The park is quite pretty with plenty of walking trails so Dan and Zoe took a couple of trails while I reminded myself in the car why I don't listen to Radio National anymore. I would have loved to trek the trails but it's a bugger that once you've walked down them you have to walk back up.
Anyway it was a great camp and the weather wasn't too bad - only getting down to 0 at night with some mild mid to high teens during the short days.
A couple of pics of the dry river, camp, etc
Would love to get back there after the drought has broken and there's plenty of river to fish.

Luvit got a reaction from Drop Bear in Fibreglass Repairs
Last time I retrieved the boat I took off 6 inches of gel coat. It would not have caused a problem but i wanted it resealed.
I took it to a business called Todd's Fibreglass that is locate at Thorneside a 1hr drive from me. The reason I I wanted Todd to do the work was on the back of a previous chat I had with him regarding some minor repairs.
I was very impressed with his knowledge and his honesty. Having someone work on my boat makes me nervous because trying to match a factory color is not easy at all.
Todd did a fantastic job and charged me $150 less than was quoted once he saw the boat in the flesh rather than quoting from the photos. As I said very honest.
If I ever require more glass work this is the guy I will be taking it to. Highly recommend him.

It’s been a while but the otoliths have been sectioned. Pics below.

Hussar:
I estimate the number of growth rings for the Moses at 28 or 29 and hussar at 33 or 34. If each ring represents one year of growth then they are both old fish!

Luvit reacted to rayke1938 in Treasure Hunting
With the water dropping quite quickly and lily pads being exposed it is nearly time to go treasure hunting. There are plenty of redclaw and shrimp pots exposed and I know of a rod that was lost near this bank, Reckon it is fair game because the owner is incapacitated for another couple of months>😉

Having the boat and my self out of action for a while I pulled my finger out and installed a new water pump and impellor, big thanks to Troy at minnkotarepairs for giving me a prop and a awesome service of my bowmount ! Took the boat for a quick “test” run up to bribie early this morning, well the boat absolutely flies along now gaining an extra 4kph and doing less revs so very happy. Would be silly of me to take the boat and not a rod, pulled up to a nice lil drop off and had spot lock working perfectly being able to work it with minimal effort and bagging afew flathead.

Luvit reacted to Old Scaley in Boat And Trailer Storage - Gold Coast
Anyone ever looked at costs for boat and trailer storage on the Goldy? Contemplating a sea change and we want to be right on the water which means a unit (couldn’t afford a house) and even if we could get one with 2 car spaces I doubt The neighbours would appreciate me cranking up the 2 banger in the underground car park 5 days a week. I can’t imagine retirement without a boat so looking for options that I can afford and will work for everyone.

Luvit reacted to kmcrosby78 in Boat And Trailer Storage - Gold Coast
Just build a shack on Wave Break Island Steve and then we can all visit and you can host socials .......... On a serious note, and I have no idea how much more you would need to pay, but investigate whether a unit with it's own pontoon in a canal is a viable option. I know @youngy has one and it must be so good not having to muck around at boat ramps, meaning that doing a short/sneaky session is no hassle.

Luvit reacted to tugger in A Week At Ballina
Stayed a week at Shaws Bay holiday park the weather was calm all week. I have never explored this coastal area what a beautiful part of the world.
Went luderick fishing in my mates tinnie along a rock wall in the river. We caught 2 fish on cabbage nothing on weed all morning so gave up with it being quite.
I fished the northern wall the next night but couldn't find any fish. Easy access to the wall from the park.
Did a bit of sight seeing the next day along the coast up to Lenox heads. For starters this was my view from camp.
This is flat rock between Ballina and Lenox Heads looks very fishy off the rocks was perfect weather to do some rock fishing as well
The view from Lenox headland looking back south
Fished the beach next to town just a short walk from the park where you can have the dogs offleash. Caught a few good whiting and bream with our dogs keen for each fish to come ashore.
Fished the end of the breakwall again on the last night but could only manage a small black spot cod.
It was a good week exploring and catching up with a mate I used to work with. The park is located next to the river and shaws bay OH did I mention it is next to the pub and fish and chip shop as well bonus.

Luvit reacted to Old Scaley in Snap And Tings
The best part about not working any more is being able to pick the best days of the week to go fishing. Yesterday was certainly a cracker to be out on the water. Had a little solo trip to the front of the rock wall, leaving the port ramp about 8am. Pretty quiet with just a few very pretty wrasse, some bream around the 25cm mark and a sole to keep me entertained early. Not a single snapper, which is what I was looking for.
Decided to move to a spot close by where I often find flatties. Threw a prawn on a bream rig while I tossed plastics around looking for the flathead. The prawn was taken by a winter whiting so I changed hooks and started feeding them half a peeled prawn. Gathered 19 in no time, and thought that would be enough filleting for one day, so moved into the river to see if I could bag a snap on the outgoing tide. Very quiet to begin with, but came on the chew 30 minutes before I needed to get off the water. Caught 4 or 5 that were around the 34cm mark and then bagged a decent 45cm model for the esky on my last cast.
Overall a beautiful day on the water. Interesting too - I saw the Japanese warships and a sunken tinnie tied off to a channel marker. Never a dull moment down there. Here is a bad picture of a couple of dead fish. Thanks for reading.
