    Hey Sam,
some weighted to around the bottom and some a metre or two under the surface with floats
we felt unlucky not to have had a better result on that trip, but hey, that's the challenge of fishing sometimes...

Well, no big fellas tonight but thought i might share some interesting pics to help out those just starting out.
Headed to a southern bay island late this arvo
    Pic 1
    Find tbe bait
( notice the flat bottom with no reef)
( also notice the vertical lines on the sounder - thats a bait jig, with full string hookups)
    Pic 2
This is what was actually showing on the sounder - herring - millions of them.
    Pic 3
The result was a couple of small snapper with the best about 62cm, was hoping for a stonker but not this time.
There were definately pelagics present too, our 20 pound leaders were being snipped through like cotton, upgraded some leaders to 40 pound but no takes (typical)....

Anyway, just thought i would share, take the time to find the fresh bait and you shall be rewarded.

Allnighter reacted to shaun1800 in You Might Get Muddy They Said... A Disaster Story
This is my first fishing report here. I wish it could be a tale of glory. But sadly it’s not that kind of story. This is a messy tale of misadventure. A cautionary tale that may make you feel a little better about your own fishing failures.
So, after reading some promising forum stories about fishing the mud flats at Lota creek at low tide for whiting and flatties, I thought I’d give it a crack.
“You might get a bit muddy” they said. Bahhh, a little mud never hurt anyone, I thought to myself. How foolish I was.
I got to Lota creek and gazed out over the patch of mud, just a short stroll across the flats and I’d be in the perfect spot. So with hope in my heart and the dream of some nice whiting fillets in my stomach I set off. Things started badly, within 10 metres I was in ankle deep and had lost both shoes (thankfully an old pair). I’m not going to let some lost shoes stop me getting to the promised land I thought. I’ll be alright.
I wasn’t alright… By half way mark I was up to my knees and starting to struggle. Suddenly that small patch of mud was looking more like several football fields. I can’t go back now I thought, so I lurched forward, each step requiring herculean effort to wrench my foot out of the mud, only for it to squelch down into another deep hole, making a hissing noise that sounded disturbingly like a disgruntled demon being exorcised.
After taking several mini breaks I was finally close enough to the water to throw in a line. There was just one problem….I was completely and utterly knackered.
So I collapsed onto my tackle bag, and sat there hyperventilating, contemplating all my poor life choices, slowly sinking and pondering better times. Like when I was sitting comfortably on @ellicat's boat, sipping a coffee and not caked from head to toe in mud that smelt of cow ****.
After about 15 minutes I mustered the strength to have a cast. I managed to catch a 3 inch whiting. “Well ****, that makes it all worth it”. I thought to myself gloomily. After a short while the tide started to come in, and I was done, so I began the long, long walk back.
Upon reaching the ramp I kind of understood how captain cook must have felt when he stepped foot on our shores for the first time. Relief is an understatement. I gave myself a bath under a park tap. A few people slowed down as they drove by to view the swamp monster freak show.
So… all in all, not a very successful fishing adventure. In fact, a pretty ****ing **** one. On the plus side, I got a hell of leg workout and now have an excuse to take several long showers. I'll be keeping my feet planted firmly on land from now on.

I had all of may, june and july off work, but unfortunately i'm back at work and in my older years i dont have the energy to do a lot of midweek - after work night fishing adventures anymore....
Although I think there's still 2 weeks left to add some more 3 fingered fish pics, so i shall endeavour to get out there!
But like many other species, that's the thing with bay snapper, of course they simply aren't at the same location all year round to be caught - that would be too easy 🙂.
Locations that consistently produce bay snapper in june/july,  are almost snapper barren at other times of the year....
Usually for me anyway, its not until november, december, january that i target some snapper around the more southern bay islands
The new moon is coming - might be time for some BIG whiting and breamies in the shallows ay.....  🙂

My son and i headed out this morning for another snapper session.
Although this time we decided to change it up a bit, so we left our normal spots alone, and also this was a catch and release session.
The challenge was on to try some new ground even closer to the boat ramp and we both decided we were only going to use little 2-4kg bream rods with 8 pound line.
I had found some interesting spots on Google Maps at home the other night, so after a short 10 minute trip from the ramp we arrived and sounded around and settled on the likely spot.
Baited up our little Shimano Raider bream rods and little Sienna reels, sat back and before too long the little reels are peeling line off !
We managed four Snapper between 60cm and 74cm and then ran out of bait but had a ball, and needless to say we have a new mark to fish at and to research ☺
All fish were sent back down to swim another day. 😊
