Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone knows of a good freshwater spot fairly close to Brisbane where I can take the family and friends for a day out tubing, skiing, BBQing and generally having a fun time? cheers Greg

Hi snap, I’m not sure of the background to your question but I must say it sounds fraught with danger. You don’t normally change a transom’s height, you buy a motor with the correct length leg to suit the transom. If the transom is not rated to take a 115 hp outboard, but something smaller you would never alter the transom. The boat’s compliance plate should state the maximum allowable hp for that boat and that limit should never be exceeded. If the boat is rated for a 115 or higher hp motor, the motor you have must be of the wrong leg length if it doesn’t fit your transom.

Yes. I used to go over there to North Point many years ago with the Hospitals fishing club. Great weekends! They had a ex army truck with aircraft tyres that took us fro: the barge to their camping area. They had generators, freezers, bunk beds and everything you needed for a comfortable weekend. We used to head to Harpers at Cape Moreton and fish for huge mulloway. You had to watch out for rogue waves though, which was difficult to do in the pitch black. Certainly got the adrenaline going! Not sure if the club is still going but I would recommend it if they still exist.

I’m in agreement with LeoB. Fresh is always best. I always had the most success with whole mullet myself. I found the bait type was less important than the shape of your funnels. I always made my own pots and a funnel shaped to suit a crab was always more successful. Try to have your funnels start at the base of the pot, not half way up like some I see. Make sure the funnel is very wide and only about one and a half times the height of a large crab. They smell the bait and creep sideways around the pot looking for a way to get at the bait. Funnels shaped as I have described allow them to enter easily, but not to exit again. Good luck!

Hi Blah Blah, I have never heard of Samiki, which is probably showing my age. Shimano is a good recognised brand so I would sway that way. Of the two Shimanos I would go for the dearer one, before discounts. It is priced higher for a reason. And if a rod feels good in your hand, go for it! I’ve got an idea in the back of my mind (which is a scary place but anyway) that you could go straight out from Burrum without any bar involved. If the bait and tackle shop is still there he could advise you otherwise I’m sure there would be one at Toogum

Another thing I jut thought of. Not sure how old your family is but there was a great swimming spot at high tide just on the southern side, river entrance, seaward side. Beautiful clear water and sandy bottom. In fact, I’m jealous! lol. One more thing, there weren’t a lot of shops etc there and it’s a fair drive back to civilisation so take a lot of the things you need with you.

Hi Wazza, You’ll probably get some more helpful and detailed replies from others on here, but for what it is worth I took the family up there a couple of times a few years ago. Nice spot. Very quiet. The Burrum River is quite wide at the heads. Your tinny will be able to go anywhere in the river. Plenty of mangroves so I would take some pots. Also lots of rock ledges, deep bends and holes for casting lures or baits. I was told there was good fishing outside the heads but we were just using a hire boat so couldn’t venture out there. I imagine mangrove jack would inhabit further up the river and you can get all the usual estuarine species. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m afraid the boat is going to have to put up with getting dirty at times. Hopefully it will mean I’m bringing a few keepers in. I used to fish Bribie passage and Moreton a lot when I was younger. I lived on Bribie for about 5 years. My house used to back onto Dux Creek before the marina even went in.

Thanks KM. Much appreciated. I will keep an eye on those fishing reports. Although, given the amount of wind we’ve been getting lately, I imagine they’ll be pretty succinct. With regard to the stejcraft, I decided to go with the new Mercury 200hp Pro XS, which should be a bit of a beast. V8. lol

Hi all, Just joined. Based on Brisbane Northside. Just sold a 35 foot flybridge cruiser (thank goodness - never again) and have ordered a Stejcraft ss64. Not sure of delivery date yet but probably within two months. I am looking for a group/club interested in fishing Moreton Bay, or any tips/spots etc. Although I have been fishing the bay for close on forty years I now have more time on my hands, and intend to spend much more time out there.
