Field Trip - Oyster Reef Exploration

Drop Bear

Recommended Posts

Hey.

I've come up with a new hair brained idea!

After chatting to some oyster farmers I have a new easier plan to put oysters back in the western bay.

Tomorrow I am going to collect some oysters from a lease and take some pictures of the Myora Oyster reef.

I will probably get some Quampies for dinner while I am there.

If anyone is keen and available let me know.

Leaving Cleveland VMR at about 7.30am for the 9am low tide.

You will need good wet shoes and sun protection.

There is a good chance of getting wet and dirty.

My boat is an open boat and 10-15 knot winds are expected so a spray jacket is probably essential.

Oh and here is a drawing of the new idea. It uses timber poles to collect the oyster spat. It is the same thing that oyster farmers do but we would make a pyramid shape to get some height out of it so it doesn't sink into the mud.

Looks impressive!

Is it the same permission process for this as the original?

I like the out of box thinking though. Just because someone has done it someone else one way should not mean that is "the way".

I will have to pass today. Only just got back from a north qld conference and keen for a family day before work.

Yes same process.

I have a meeting on Thursday with some UQ peeps that are wanting to make a scaffold out of biodegradable starch for oyster reefs.

Should be interesting.

Well it was pretty wild out there today but we made it across to Myora and checked out the oyster reef that is there.

Its a pretty cool place with lots of shellfish.

It was great to get lots of pics to put in the submission we are working on.

Thanks for coming along @Howler , Syd and Ash

Here are some things we found

Pearl oyster or Quampie

Great day out Rob with some good findings and pictures there. Did you keep some for a feed? From a fishing point of view you'd have to think that reef would be littered with fish on a rising tide, including snapper at the right time/s.

My jobs on the boat took longer than expected so between that and the ever-increasing winds I didn't make it out today. Made good progress though with just the bench seat to install, oh and need a taller all-round white light (or need to move it to a new higher position).

@Do$tylz did you mention you can get battery operated lights off Ebay that shine brightly and are cheap?

Yes we had a few Quampies and oysters but not many.

It is a really interesting site and one that we need to manufacture on our side of the bay. i hope to have Wildlife corridors from Green to Wynnum foreshore in 10 years.

Those jobs can be tricky...

I don't like the removable all round white lights that you can easily buy. I have had 2 bounce out of the brackets and the connections corrode quickly. I am going to make my own fold down type one. One day...

I also have had not much luck with the battery ones as the ones I have had are not properly waterproof so corrode. Hopefully better ones are available.
