Go into your local tackle store, put the reel on a few and see what feels nice
bingo. will come down to feel more than anything. any of the main brands will be fine, comes down to your preference

id imagine you mean at casting at tuna? not trolling or anything like that
i would think an 8000 would be more than sufficient. having said that, ive never chased the likes of big kings in the bay. i think the smaller reel would allow for more uses.

Were they willing to move around to get you onto the fish or have high fuel prices put a stop to this?
honestly id rate them pretty highly. 8.5 out of 10. given it was only a 5 hour charter, everyone on the boat went home with a feed. we only stayed at a spot for a small amount of time with no action before moving on. when the fish came on, it was crazy with the entire boat hooking fish after fish, the pair of them ran around like mad men for a while measuring each fish, sorting out who caught what, de-gassing fish for a healthy release, clearing tangles etc once we were on the fish we just stayed on them until they moved on. they even offered to gut and gill and or fillet for every person on board. i was quite impressed considering it was two younger guys who captained and deckied. they worked non-stop all the way until everyone was off the boat.

hey all
finally got around to using my gift voucher for a Noosa offshore charter. although earlier in the week the weather looked perfect, the wind and rain turned up on Sunday morning. I must have caught 20+ pearlies, a few undersized Maori cod and 10 small reds. came home with 2 legal pearlies which turned into a great feed for the family. all in all it was just good to get out and into some fish!

you wont look back from a hobie. i bought my outback second hand for only 900
add a few accessories and its a beast to fish from. they are faster than paddles, and you can literally go all day in one. ive also taken my 2yo boy out for a fish, its a little cramped but certainly doable

Why not try one of the freshwater dams, that will cover bait collection and I'm sure @rayke1938 will give you some tips and tricks to hook up on some fish in the canoe
fresh water gar are always a great option. i know my brother had great fun with his young kids on the gar. tiny hooks and a small piece of bread

i took my 2yo to fish on my kayak in the pine river just near the lawnton boat ramp. was nice and calm and proteced. very minimal traffic too. on the lower tides there are a few sand banks exposed that we could walk on and fish from. we got a few good bream for our trouble. report here

could have been a good sized cod too. they can be big lumps and lazy fighters.
this is why i love fishing, those monster mysterious fish are what keeps you going back for more!
ive never known eels to have a "big" head shake and ive caught some monster eels.

When land based I found I had to gear up a bit, mostly because you needed about 300-350m of line and you needed heavier gear to turn their heads.
Anything 1.5m and under wasn't a problem but for anything in the 1.8m-3.5m size you really had to put your back into it to keep them from spooling you.
The underwater topography changes things too, rocky or coral bottoms posed a big problem or bringing them into a jetty.
If you bought them into a jetty when they still had fight in them then they would wrap you up and snap you off.
But if you tired them out and brought them in near the surface then you could hold them there to get a good look before cutting them free.
you could really go into a lot more details like you've mentioned. I've encountered people having to kayak out mid fight to pull a shark over the drop off as they were essentially stuck on it and couldn't lift it over the drop off

That's a pretty good guide, I do things a little different but I mostly only small differences and I tend to fish land based and that changes things quite a bit.
But we have pulled up 3m tiger sharks on 15lb mono from a boat.
Do you ever target them from the land?
ive got no boat now so yeah. only small stuff lately as ive got young kids so sessions are few and far between

After a few successful moments of taking my 2yo out in the kayak for very short paddles, decided its time to try and have a fishing session with him on board. Only paddled about 200m from the launch point incase it all went sour. It all started with tears as he wanted to play with the car instead...but after a fire truck going screaming over the bridge some clever distracting by dad, we were off! My game plan was simple, servo prawns and one rod. catch anything at all to show him and go home happy. Turned out the bream loved the servo prawns. Caught a few legal fish and a few under sized. Not bad for a 1.5 hour session, 200m from a boat ramp and using servo prawns. Little bloke had a few nerves and was happier to see the fish released "bye bye fish, BYE BYE FISH!!!), but he loves to keep looking back at the photos of the trip so ill take that as a success. On the plus side, it means i can get more fishing in as ill just take him with me now.
any tips on how to get kids not to hate wearing their pfd?
