  1. G'day @Philippp If I am not mistaken, you should be very careful dealing with those crabs. They are a species of stone crabs that are poisonous to eat and have very strong claws. I read this sometime ago when researching a few spots in the river. Taken from Brisbane Hooked on Fishing group on Facebook. Cheers Hamish
  2. Good luck Greg. Sounds like you have to good plans. From what I've heard there is a lot of fresh in the Fitzroy so around Port Alma would probably be good to try. Cheers Hamish
  3. Thanks for the tips Tuna. Fishing in NZ sounds like good fun! Lots of snapper and kingies over there. Cheers Hamish
  4. Good job Ray. Hopefully NPD will start producing more soon! Cheers Hamish
  5. Thanks Kat. I rarely hold my rod when fishing live baiting to be honest - or even dead baiting. I find most fish I hook tend to run away from structure, and only start running in there when I pull them towards it. I guess that's different on a boat though. Thanks Bro. I don't think I will end up buying a high (er) end spinning reel. Hey Steve Thanks for the tips. Oh yeah, and I may be able to stop cashing in bottles. I've just written up a resume to try and get a job at Woolies (although I'm not sure if they will employ me until I'm older - legally I can be employed at 13 though I think I need to be older for woolies). Hi Brian Thanks for the kind offer! I think I will take you up on it! Sounds like it will be a great reel. Also, thanks for the other tips relating to baitrunners. Thanks @Cobiaaddict, sounds like you love them! Hi Ed. Thanks for the great tips. If I do end up purchasing one I'll definitely test it out on my rod before I buy it. Cheers, Hamish
  6. Hi all Well it's come to my attention that my Penn Spinfisher 650 SSM has seen better days. After a screw fell out of the bail arm, parts were lost, and a piece of biro has been used as a spacer (between some long screw cap I found in my laundry and the side of the bail arm) to ensure the bail arm stays tight (this snapped as well recently and I've been using pieces of twigs I've scavenged off jetties for the spacer), I've decided that it was a well spent $90 6 years ago. My question is, is a baitrunner really worth it? Over many years, I'm very used to just having my drag set loosely and tightening it when a fish takes the bait (or holding my rod, occasionally). The model baitrunner I'm looking at is the Penn Liveliner SSVI - https://www.dinga.com.au/products/penn-spinfisher-ssvi-live-liner-spinning-reels-new-2018 Which has carbon fiber drag washers, 5+1 stainless steel ball bearings, puts off between 9-13.5KG of drag (excessive for any thready/jewie, maybe not a large shark though), retrieves around a metre of line per full crank, and has a full metal body. The model I am thinking of choosing would either be the 4500 or 6500 size, which retails somewhere between $192-$215 (pricy!). The second option, which is just a Penn Spinfisher SSM 650, is the normal spinning reel I'm looking at - https://www.dinga.com.au/products/penn-spinfisher-ssm-heavy-duty-saltwater-spinning-reels-840 This reel only puts off a mere 4.5KG of drag (to be honest, I've still found this plenty for all fish I've caught in the river), 5 stainless steel ball bearings (and one anti reverse one), retrieves around 90CM of line per crank, is fully metal, but only HT 100 drag washers (fibreglass sheet on carbon fibre). So, to my main question - is the baitrunner really worth it? It will be used for at least the next five years, mainly chasing Brisbane River grunter, threadies, jew, squire, sharks, and flatties. I will be using it predominately for live bait fishing, occasionally using strip baits or dead baits. What's everyone's opinion? Oh, and the rod it will be paired with will be a Rogue Firepoint Boat Rod, 5-8KG, 6"6'. This rod has sufficed well over the last 5 years, and I'm hoping it will last for that long again. For the record, the original combo cost me $125.00 from BCF - and has lasted over 6 years. So great value for money. Thanks for any advice, and apologies for the long topic. Cheers Hamish
  7. Well it was a shame Kyrgios got knocked out. The Aussies have had a bad draw so far. A bit of an upset Oskaka was knocked out! But Barty has been playing great. Hopefully she'll win. Cheers Hamish
  8. Hi Myles Judging by other threads you have posted, you seem to be wanting a longer cast. You will not achieve this with the same level of ease or to the same degree in general using a baitcaster, opposed to a spin reel. Your new combo sounds good for jacks. If you start flicking it around early morning, late afternoon, and at night with that surface lure, you will have a good chance at a jack or trevally. You will find that bite rates are not the same on surface in sunlight hours, mainly because bait isn't busting up as much. Good luck, Cheers Hamish
  9. Welcome to the forum April. I occasionally fish that area off the yak. I mainly fish from Jindalee downstream though. I am keen to get my first Brisbane River Bass! When we go on the kayak we normally launch from Twin Bridges, though I don't think it's got the best landbased fishing. If you want garfish, you could try fishing around the Kholo area. They are good baits (especially for big catfish, which put up a good fight on great gear) and taste alright, apparently. Cheers Hamish
  10. Hey Charlie Personally, I would spend a little bit more money on a rod. I reckon an Abu Garcia Veritas is hard to go past. They range from about $120-$140. Cheers Hamish
  11. Nice work Ray. It is a shame the fish weren't chewing. Cheers Hamish
  12. Hey Brendan I've been seeing some pretty good sessions on dart from beaches around the Gold Coast - then again, I can't imagine the surf fishing in general would be as good as the Sunny Coast, or one of the islands. Cheers Hamish
  13. Wow! Great job Steve!!! It's a shame it wasn't 5CM longer! Awesome fish! Cheers Hamish
  14. No. Definitely not . I agree with you Steve - I really hope Ash Barty wins this grand slam though! It was a great game to be watching Ray. Cheers Hamish
  15. Welcome to the forum Mick. What fish do you plan to be chasing? Cheers Hamish
  16. Hey @longhairedwahoo I agree with Breaming with Bro. Most telescopic rods are low quality and often aren't sensitive, and the weight is unbalanced. In saying that, I have a $70 rod and reel combo (telescopic) that comes with me whenever I go hiking or camping, and it has held up well over 4 or 5 years. Another option is a three piece (or even four piece) rod. I own a three piece which I use as well as my telescopic. While I prefer the telescopic for chucking lure (light lures though, not what you'd typically use offshore) I can still cast around 25 metres with the three piece, and it's a bit of a cheapy. I'd imagine if you looked around you'd be able to find a good quality one for a reasonable price. Cheers Hamish
  17. So who here watches the tennis? Which player is everyone going for in the AO? Hopefully Kyrgios wins this round in straight sets! Hamish
  18. Good work Ray, it is a shame there weren't more fish biting. Cheers Hamish
  19. Hi Myles Your leader sounds good, although you could go slightly heavier. I am not sure what colour people use for jacks, but I know the new range in the 120mm size is popular for larger trevally and jacks. I see a lot of fish coming off gold, purple, and pink lures. Like ellicat said assist hooks aren't necessary, and MMD lures come with trebles already. Holt Production Swim Prawns are also popular lures for mangrove jacks if you're looking for plastics. Any rock bar or type of structure will hold jacks. You just need to cast a lot. Cheers Hamish
  20. Hi Dino Great work. That’s a nice amount of fish! Shame about the rod though. Cheers Hamish
  21. Great work Oscar. 78cm is a horse. The only lure I have caught flatties on is 2.5 inch zman grubs with about a 1-6th jighead. Cheers Hamish
  22. Hi Oscar I do not fish the Noosa River a lot although I know many people have success fishing from boats around the edge of sand bars, mangrove forests, and rock bars. Cheers Hamish
  23. Thanks KM, it was great with no sun. Cheers Drop Bear
  24. Great job Chris. That's still quite the session in my books! Cheers Hamish
