Welcome to this week’s e-newsletter.

Online editor Mick Fletoridis is away bonefishing for the next couple of weeks so I'm unleashed onto the digital world! Hopefully I won't screw things up too much …

This week we lead our e-newsletter with some disturbing images of a school of massive permit which was netted at Noosa, in southern Queensland, last weekend. No-one denies the right of commercial operators to make a living but surely this sort of thing is going a bit far, especially considering the permit's worth internationally as a recreational species? For the record, it's reported that these fish, which all look to be around the 8-10kg range, were sold for $2 a kilo …

Now to fishy politics and most of us are probably still shaking our heads over what happened at the federal election on the weekend. It was certainly a strange result. We still don't know who our PM will be!

Fisho has placed calls to the three Independents, as well as the Greens. So far we've only managed to speak with Bob Katter's people, who told us the North Queensland MP was keen to "take his grandkids fishing and hunting" and did not want to see those "rights destroyed by do-gooders from down south".

It will be interesting to see how recreational fishing interests pan out in the new parliament, and whether sensible and balanced agreements can be forged between the various parties and individuals who now hold power.

Thanks to everyone who visited the Fisho site and comments during our pre-election coverage last week. It's imperative that we all remain committed to working together to ensure the best outcomes for all of Australia's anglers, now and in the future.

There is no doubt angling issues played a role in the election - media reports today say the former member for Solomon in the NT, the ALP's Damian Hale, has said the Greens' policy on closing huge areas to fishing was one of the issues that cost him his seat.

Journalist David Coady reported that Hale said the Country Liberals' newspaper advertisements linking the Greens policy to Labor cost him.

"I think that was maybe one of the turning points for us," Hale said.

Interesting stuff …

Also, don't forget to have your say about the marine park changes being put forward in NSW. Even if you don't live in NSW, you should still have a say on the formation of these parks at Coffs Harbour and Jervis Bay - your input WILL make a difference. Log onto www.savesol.com and www.savejb.com and make your voice heard. It only takes a few minutes.

Until next week …
