Trying to settle a dispute re the ID of this fish. Whats your thoughts?

They also call them Kawai (spelling?) in New Zealand and have heard them called that but Kiwi's here as well.

It was caught at tweed a few weeks ago

I wasn't there it was a friend of a friend that caught it (pictured) and I was told it tasted very nice.

Thats rite Gus i have caught loads of Kahawai in Auckland, when you catch them you must bleed them before the blood soaks into the flesh.....Great fish to smoke

+1 Immediate bleed and smoked is the only way to go with these fish.

My first thought was tailor due to the fact that I didnt realise Aussie salmon come so far up the coast but then realised it did look like a salmon. They were told black salmon which I had never heard of. So we started debating and goggling black salmon with no results
