ABT BREAM GRAND FINAL, FORSTER NSW.

Austackle Pro-Angler Dean Gamble from Victoria really gave the competition and the more well known anglers an enormous shake up by finishing 4th in this year’s Grand Final held recently in Forster NSW. What made Deans effort even more amazing was the fact he had never been to Forster before let alone fished there.

Dean stuck to his game plan of fishing the flats and weed beds of Wallis Lake and this tactic certainly paid dividends. After weighing in 5 fish for 3.09kgs on Day 1, he followed up on Day 2 with 4 fish 2.88kg which had him sitting in 4th place heading into the final day.

The bite on the final day was much more fickle and different tactics were needed to get solid hook ups. Unfortunately, Dean dropped a few fish in the first couple of hours before changing his rigging. In the end he weighed in another 3 fish for 2.03kg which was enough to see him hang on to 4th spot with an overall weight of exactly 8.0kgs.

Dean was armed with Takeda Fireblades and Camo Stiks and fished a variety of lures including Sakanas and Joeys which caught him heaps of fish but only 3 legals. His main successes were had by slow rolling small soft plastics across the flats.

Russell Babekuhl from NSW came from behind the pack to win the event with a last day bag of 5 fish for 3.38kg giving him a winning total of 8.84kg. Well known Queensland angler Tristan Taylor finished in second place with a total of 8.57kg and 3rd spot went to Steve Gill from NSW with 8.20kg.

Steve Morgan finished in 8th spot after leading the field at the end of day 1. Brother Tim “The Bream†Morgan finished in 14th place. Kris Hickson finished in 15th place and Darren “Dizzy†Borg finished in 19th spot.

so how did Drewy go?

Drew probably caught more fish than anybody in the field. For example he caught over 30 Bream on Day 1 but only 2 were legal. He finished towards the tail which is a shame cos he put in a huge effort. I gtuess all you can do is catch fish - you cant really dictate what size they are going to be.
