Strange large moreton island fish

Was fishing out in the bay on sunday and there were heapsss of these fish close to the surface eating our berley trail. was able to catch a few for fun but we have no idea what they are??

That is a bat fish.. Heaps around the Whitsundays up north

It's better not to gaff something if you had no idea what it is. It may have been a protected species or something like that.

Maybe grab yourself a landing net and some gloves for next time.

Yep Runty is right Bat Fish. They go pretty hard on light gear.

muzz, the point is a fair one in that if an angler doesn't know what a particular species is, they shouldn't gaff, harm or keep the fish and instead should release it unharmed. This is so that if in the instance it is a protected fish or is outside its allowable size limits the angler does not breach the law.

It only requires one person to make the point, which has now been made. As such I would expect it is left at that and any additional points along these lines will be removed.
