It's better not to gaff something if you had no idea what it is. It may have been a protected species or something like that. :)

Maybe grab yourself a landing net and some gloves for next time. ;)

muzz, the point is a fair one in that if an angler doesn't know what a particular species is, they shouldn't gaff, harm or keep the fish and instead should release it unharmed. This is so that if in the instance it is a protected fish or is outside its allowable size limits the angler does not breach the law.

It only requires one person to make the point, which has now been made. As such I would expect it is left at that and any additional points along these lines will be removed.
