I have got a couple of those Samaki rods. They are lovely to use and great value. The heaviest is a 10-20lb rod which I usually pair with either. 4000 Stradic or similar sized Daiwa Sol. Will handle most things but I probably wouldn’t try to swing a Jew up off the rocks. They are quite fine for the weight rating. No worries with average tailor, bream etc. Great snapper outfit.

I think this round will see me battling it out with Jono and Greg for the bottom of the ladder. I need more byes for the QLD teams!

A bit embarrassing that your old mate’s last battle was with a grinner, but sad nonetheless. Sounds like you have plenty of fallback options. -
queensland North West Island Trip In September
Old Scaley replied to Glenn Hall's topic in Saltwater
Should be a great trip, Kelvin. Taking the boys? I have seen a few YT videos of the barge they use. Great idea. When you said the island is closed for pest eradication I immediately thought they might be getting rid of grinners, in which case they could have waited for you to take care of that for them. I can’t talk, though. All my recent fishing trips have been dominated by grinners and sharks! Enjoy the planning!- 18 replies

I was camping at Blakesleys a couple of weeks ago. We had crab pots out front of the camp in 4 or 5 metres of water. When we collected them in the morning a massive tiger followed them all up and even knocked a couple right beside the boat. It was at least 500mm across the head and we estimated at least 3 metres long. Very big animal. Needless to say we decided against the morning swim.

I love a fish curry and mackerel are a great ingredient for curries. I had some school mackerel on the weekend that I made with my favourite fish curry recipe. Very simple but really tasty https://shop.rickstein.com/pages/madras-fish-curry-recipe

Great report @Another Wazza That spotty is pretty handy bycatch, and a big fella to boot.

I caught the fishing bug as a 10 year old pulling endless butter bream up from the jetty and cooking them whole over a little fire on the beach. Great days. Everything Ted says above is spot on. Depending on the experience level of your 12 year old, I would stick to sections A and C. Section B can produce good fish but be prepared to lose a lot of terminal tackle. Take plenty because as Ted said, it is dear there. Same for bait. You can get yabbies near the caravan park if you have a pump. Hope you enjoy your time there.

Can we all pray to the weather gods for a break from this damn wind
Old Scaley replied to Huxstang's topic in Saltwater
Fished Jumpinpin today and contrary to the forecast the weather was perfect. No wind or rain. No run either so not a lot of fish. 6 whiting in the early 30s and a thousand tiny whiting and undersized tarwine. Crabs came to the party though with four good bucks to take home and a lot of giant females. -

That try was unbelievable. Warriors were unlucky not to win. As were Newcastle. Worked out well for us tipsters though. @GregOug, I haven’t had any trouble with tips or margins changing but it takes the fun out of it a bit when you can’t see others tips during the game.
