yeah when I used to go with Angus, I never committed to throwing the big stuff off deadies/frenchies. Would get distracted on the light stuff, but should have committed to going with the big GT Popping gear.
Got absolutely railed off the gorge on 2500 gear. Stripped the line in 1 run and visibly smoked coming off the spool. Suspect it was a GT because we spotted a school cruising in tight but never got to actually see what was hooked on the other side. I want my revenge....
Yeah caught up with him the other day! He did pretty well on the light stuff. I was using my usual 50lb gear for around there and didn't get a touch, however I'm pretty content at missing the smaller models for these nice medium sized fish when they are around
sounds like you're due a trip to Minjerribah

Awesome work Sam, some nice feeds there. Well done for changing it up and succeeding. What size metals did you hop?
Thanks mate, I think it's a 60gram Gorilla? Got from the local shop. Sometimes 'straddie lures' are a good purchase too! Tryna support local. Casting distance is most important for that spot though. I like to use the fancier stuff like Stickbaits, plastics, and microjigs in other spots where cast distance isn't as crucial

Had another go landbased this morning in some fishy looking waters. Nothing for the first half a dozen casts or more; which called for change of technique. Instead of the cast and fast retrieval of the lure which usually works well, I hopped the metal lure off the bottom with a slow wind and twitch of the rod... BOOM hooked up to a decent Trev shy of the metre mark. I saw it thrash on the surface as it shook it's head before flicking me the bird with it's tail and wrapping me around a rock. Not nice, but sometimes happens.
Next 4 casts was a hookup each cast... same slow retrieval. Landed a nice 53cm tailor and bigeye trev (I think). Tomorrows camping trip protein sorted.
It goes to show we can never have fishing figured out no matter how often we fish a spot or how much success we have. Keep trying new things until something works.

beast Geets off the rock Sam. Have you hooked up to the +1m ones out there yet?
Just now off deadies, same spot as the last few. Was probs about 90cm though and reefed me. There's a compromise with gear isn't there; the lighter the more eats but get dusted by those rarer large models. I use 80lb at the gorge though but it's been pretty quiet lately. Might have another go this arvo

Ahhh we have gone full circle! And hence why the original post is very relevant and helpful to us

Depends when and where and can be hit or miss. Fraser big problem, straddie medium problem, haven't camped at Moreton but good luck haha

Sorry to break it to you but that’s not a mangrove jack that’s a American speices called mangrove snapper they look similar but they are different
So? They are similar yes, especially in the way they feed so it still applies here.
Such amazing footage! Cheers Brian

I don’t know what guys have been doing doing no offence but I think it’s user error I personally think 99% of wind knots are user error I rarely ever get them and if I do there usually minor and I can undo them I’ve heard spray silicone spray on the line before and after fishing reduces wind knots with braid if you guys have trouble with wind knots that might be something you should look into but I’ve never had to do this I can fish in heavy winds and still avoid wind knots I think it has more to do with the quality of the braid and how you spool it and also the leader knot you use to connect you’re braid to a leader and I think the rod guides and way you cast influence’s this the first ever time I used braid I got 3 wind knots which I was able to untie when I got home I realised I didn’t cut my tag ends enough on my leader connection even though I got close it wasn’t close enough every time after that I rarely got winds I’ve probably get 5 wind knots a year I usually fish once or twice a week usually atleast 2-3 hours of fishing a week usually in mid winds
Lots of variables involved here, best to not make assumptions without having the facts first

Braid Pros: Has a thinner diameter for its breaking strain allowing for longer casts.
Has very little stretch allowing for greater sensitivity for bites and to turn fish quicker, also more effective for working lures.
Has no 'memory' off the spool therefore travelling through guides with less resistance= longer casts.
Easy to see your line.
Braid cons: very poor abbrasion resistance and highly visible to fish.
Must use flouro or mono leader when using braid.
Must take more care in preserving braided lines (avoid rubbing on hooks or sliding against objects in the car etc.)
Mono pros: high stretch and more forgiving can be of benefit to some styles of fishing.
Often no need to use an additional leader.
Very good abrasion resistance and longevity.
Mono cons: Spool memory.
Inferior choice for long distance casting.
More stretch means reduced feel and lure workability.
Flourocarbon is mostly used as a leader due to it being much more expensive than mono. It has less stretch and less visibility in the water and also better abrasion resistance. It is sometimes used by bream fishos on the whole spool in 3lb or 4lb breaking strains but mostly just used as a leader across the board.
These days braided line is the best choice for most applications with some exceptions. In my opinion the pros definitely outweigh the cons and it's an obvious choice for my uses

Thankyou! I joined AFO 8 years ago as a beginner and asked many questions and started learning a lot (as you're doing too!). Spent lots of time not catching and still do, and sometimes it's bloody hard work. Might sound silly but I'm a bit sore from yesterday with over 100 max effort casts to get the lure in the right spot followed by a high speed retrieve; non stop for 2 hours and running all over the rocks. Quality fish can be tough. I guess the secret is simply 'hard work'

Evening all,
I had a couple of hours free before work this arvo so I tried my luck at catching dinner land based. I got a tailor early on but it seemed that there wasn't many of those around. I also got a small trev about 35cm which I decided to let go. I was immediately rewarded by the fishing gods next cast when my samaki slash 55 gets pack attacked by some solid GTs across the surface. This kept me interested for the next hour or so trying to find them again. Dozens and dozens of casts went by. I usually only fish this landbased spot for 15 mins before moving on as it seems to be a case of fish either being there or not. However having seen the chunky geets cruising around definitely kept me interested for longer this time.
Eventually my lure got smacked (60g chrome this time) and immediately knew it was one of the proper ones I'd seen before. I tightened up as much as was safe on my 30lb set up but was still going to require a bit of luck and skill to angle the fish away from the rocky bommies that jut out everywhere.
Well, I got lucky and with a bit of rock hopping I steered the fish onto a ledge. Pretty stoked on the light gear to get the job done! Man they are an incredibly powerful fish.
70cm and a few delicious meals to come. Thanks Mr Trevally! Very grateful. Good feeling after so many donut sessions recently
yes I have pants on

I'm sure you've seen the vids out there of blokes using 9 inch plastics and big swim baits. Less bites between fish but certainly gives you a better chance of enticing a big girl

Welp, I did mention I didn't catch a fish for 3 weeks the other day didn't I? Would have been 10 fishless reports it's a funny old fishery over here seemingly, very on and off.
