    Hamish it doesn’t matter if you leave some flesh behind when filleting. Use a teaspoon to scoop up the remaining flesh from the frame and put it into a clip lock bag (free of blood and scales if possible). By the time you’ve finished a few fish there should be enough fish mince for some fish cakes or sang choy bow (Thai mince dish). It works better with larger fish but the best thing is the poorer you are at filleting the richer your fish mince bag will be!

    Forget about lures. Slow troll dead/ live baits around the outer gneerings/blinker area. Just look for all the other boats doing the same. plenty of info on rigs, techniques and best baits out there. Google “bump trolling” that’s what they call it in florida cos they bump it in and out of gear to keep it slow. Best of luck

    Good to know mate. They are cracking examples of S. analis. I don’t see many over 30cm in my travels! The lack of a dark spot under the pectoral was the decider for me. They tend to feel rougher in the hand than ciliata too. What is the mouth mackerel destined for? Food or bait?

    flat out no take species in Qld ciguatera risk unknown, but likely to be very low (in my opinion) given it is a juvenile and has probably lived most of its life in Moreton Bay which isnt a known ciguatera hot spot. So similar to other tropical snappers caught in and near the bay (mangrove jacks, moses perch, green jobfish etc)

    One for your science teacher Hamish - juvenile reds have been in Moreton Bay for years mate. Like other tropical snappers they spend their time as juveniles in shallow bays like Moreton Bay, then migrate North to deeper/warmer waters. For years there has been reports of reds, coral trout and juvenile nannies around Bulwer and Peel. My bro caught a 45cm chinaman in the bay a few months ago, and Jeff from the Qld museum said they are known to be in the bay as juveniles. The way to assess if changes in water temperature/currents are having an effect on species populations is by investigating trends of abundance of these species in areas over time.

    Got a few in the Rainbow this week too. One went over 70cm. Word is out! Have heard of them being caught in the usual haunts of the Rous and 4 beacons too...

    Done a bit of research - first time size limits were legislated in Qld was 1877 (yes, 1877 not 1977) in the Queensland Fisheries Act 1877- these were minimum legal size in weight not length. Almost 100 years later, the Fisheries Act 1976 was the first time bag limits were introduced in Qld. Info is from this book:

    I’d have to check. There were definitely size limits for popular species before 1994 but I’m not sure about possession limits. I know pre-1988 recreational fishers could sell their excess catch to local “Fish Boards” so perhaps there were no possession limits. Leave it with me

    my favourite braid for 40lb and up thin, strong, no coatings or colours to fade and super smooth. tested breaking strains also which helps you decide which to select for your porpoise. But it is very expensive and i dont think lighter braid justifies the price so i will buy 8 strand PE on special by thickness (not rating) for 30lb and under

    We have a 5m waverider at work built to survey. All of us own boats and were very impressed with the build quality, customisation and ride of this thing. It eats up the chop and is super stable (we tow a 3m beam for research work) compared to the last plate boat we had built by Origin. it was a solid boat but the reverse chine/deep vee hull design didn’t work with all the weight at the back and off the plane would be so tippy that no one was comfortable working in it. On the plane it was good but really sensitive to any slight movement. It was a dog! heres the link to the Waverider http://waveriderboats.com.au/commercial/ worth a look at the videos crossing the bar my personal boat is a 3.85 seajay nomad and it is a “smooth water” boat. 1.6mm pressed aluminium tinny with a 25 yammy. I’m fairly conservative but Have crossed bars and fished up to 3nm offshore on good forecasts. Pick the eyes out of the forecast and have a second boat for the long journeys is smart. We do 1770 3 day trips in a 530 cruise craft explorer and have been 14nm off waddy point fraser in a 14ft tinny on a good day. Just learn the capabilities of your vessel and what conditions you are comfortable with and be safe

    Jeezus there’s a lot of $$ for the one trip! Just note the saragosa 10000 is a pretty heavy reel and low gear (4.9:1) not high gear. I’d also not go below 6ft for your trolling rod. The extra length gives you more control. I’d be taking a 50lb 7ft overhead setup for shallowish (<50m) water and a 80lb 6’6 overhead setup for deep (>50m) water.you could troll with both of these if you have 10m of mono leader atop the braid. Plus a light spin setup 30lb braid and a heavy spin that could double as your popper rod (65lb-80lb braid) Id guarantee you will be using the light spin and light overhead the most. Don’t bother with the ultralight stuff 30lb is the minimum I would fish in reefy country. to be honest the Shimano Terez line of rods would do all of this for you. Match them to the reel you want (can’t go wrong with mid range Shimano) at the shop and pull on them and see what you like. Go to a smaller store if you are spending this much $$ and they will price match or even beat the big guys I’m sure. Keep it simple. Remember the fish don’t know what gear they are attached to!
