Well, the shovel nose shark flap meat is a known substitute for scallop meat so cook it the same as you would scallops. From memory pike are just a bunch of bones and I wouldn’t bother cooking them. Without knowing what the other undesirables are I can’t comment further. Good luck!

My wish list for 2020 is:
1: To catch a legal sized mudcrab
2: To catch a Mackerel (Spotty, Spano, any)
    3: To catch a Barramundi
4: To catch a Threadfin Salmon
5: To catch anything other than a catfish, ANYTHING.
All 5 are seemingly impossible, but  i just keep on trying.

This is a bit of an old post now but I’ve found that if you simply put some wire netting around your gardens without much support the possums won’t get in. They don’t like the wire swaying around under them. Another instance is I had possums eating my avocado leaves as soon as they appeared because the small tree was abutting a solid fence. I just wrapped some bird netting around the branches for about a foot above the fence and, once again, they haven’t touched a leaf since, because they don’t like the netting swaying around beneath them. They like a solid footing. Give them a fragile footing and they go elsewhere.

Hit up Palm beach reef for an early morning session a couple of days ago. Jumped currumbin creek bar and joined the other boats already anchored but luckily no one was on my usual spot.
We floated out pilchards and spun with slugs but it was all bait doing the work. The 1st fish hit the deck by 0500 and there was not much time before the next strike. We had double hook ups, tangles and plenty of fun keeping baits in the water.
All up we got 8 strikes and landed 5 big Spottie mackerel in just over an hour. We were back on the ramp by 0800 and filleting by 0830. The fresh fish went well on the bbq with family and friends.

As with most of my fishing experiences my last eel catching adventure was many years ago. We used to catch as many eels as we wanted in the pool below the spillway at North Pine Dam. They used to get trapped there after the rains and then remain there during  the dry periods. Whether they are still there, whether you are allowed to fish there anymore and even whether there is still the big rock pool below the spillway any more I couldn’t tell you though.Good luck!

Just reading an old fishing hints book and found one for cod. It’s titled Ten, Twenty, Cod Aplenty. Simply states that cod are much more active when the barometer is above 1020. Also applies for Golden Perch and Bass. Might help someone.

Caught a few small black tip reef/whaler type sharks the other day. An old greek fella showed me how to do them up years ago.
I did the same thing a few years later (today) and they turned out as good as any fish.
    Sharks were 1-1.3 mtrs size.
Once caught I donged them on the head and then cut their Gills with a knife (my preferred method of bleeding){see old post "dont cut fishes throats to bleed"} as well as cutting off their tail, Dorsal and pec fins. Then left in a bucket of water or tied over the side for 5 mins to bleed out.
next off with their head and guts and into the freezer or Ice slurry for 4-5 hours.
pull them out and fillet and skin. Chop the fillet into  10 cm pieces, then fillet the fillet. That means make each piece as thin as possible, say 1-2 cm thick. (roughly the dimensions of a piece of loaf bread)
Then put in a tray and soak in milk for 4-6 hours or over nite in a fridge. this will remove the iodine and ammonia taste/smell shark is known for.
When ready for eating they were rinsed off in water and then rolled in flour, salt, pepper etc and oil shallow pan fried.
.Turned out sensational and how i remember all those years ago when the old Greek fella gave me a few pointers. I have also used this meat for curries and it is great.
He taught me how to do BIG OCCY as well but another time/post.
So next time if your having a tough day and can only manage a few of the Razor Gang NOAHS, something to try..
    Good Luck.

Ok, so 2019 is pretty much done and dusted for me.  Now I don’t work any more and can get out on the water while most of you are are doing the hard yards at work, I will probably stay off the water until the Xmas break is over. But I am already thinking about my fishing goals for next year. Here they are:
    1. Get amongst the prawns in the late summer/early Autumn run. I have a good net and lots of time available but will need to sharpen up my casting and find a good deckie to help me out with the boat manoeuvres and take turns at casting.
    2. Mangrove jack - haven’t chased them for a while and haven’t caught one for a few years, so they are on the list.
    3. Macks- school, spotted or Spanish, In Moreton Bay or beyond.
    4. Catch a longtail tuna in Moreton Bay.  Have caught them in other places but they have defeated me so far in the Bay.
Pretty modest list really. Anyone else care to share their wish list for 2020?

    hey mate,
there is no right or wrong answer to this question.  bread and butter species are found on any rocky headland, rock groyne or breakwall.  your two hour drive window basically opens up anything from byron to noosa.  the best thing to do at this time of year is to try and be in a spot when most people don't want to be - i.e. early morning, night time etc.  crowds can be a killer, especially if there is limited space in a location because of wind and waves.
take a couple of different rigs and baits, definitely a few lures etc as well.
remember your fishing licence in NSW.
Spots to try (roughly south to north)
    broken head
    cape byron
    brunswick river mouth
    cabarita
    hastings point
    fingal
    tweed river mouth
    snapper rocks
    tallebudgera creek mouth
    burleigh headland
    southport seaway walls
    point lookout on straddie
    cape moreton on moreton isl
    caloundra headland
    mooloolah river mouth
    point cartwright
    point arkwright
    noosa river mouth
    double island point

thes best spot depends a lot on tide, wind and swell conditions, on the day, for example fingal head in a 15kn southerly is not safe whereas mooloolah river mouth is safe in a 30kn southerly.  I like river mouths in rougher/windier conditions as there is usually a more sheltered side of the breakwall.

hope you get onto a few.

    Cheers,

    hey mate
a lot of people go the measured mile because it is close and often produces.  the best catches i have found are if you can find a beacon with bait and no other boats - this usually means going further out and further north but it is not always necessary.   boat traffic will kill a bite really quickly, especially if a lot of people are trolling the area.  my personal favourite in closer was the m8 beacon but usually went further north in the channel between moreton and bribie.

i usually drifted past a marker and checked for bait (and if there way anything hanging around the bait) and then anchored up about 40m upcurrent of the beacon and set pilchards or livies back towards the beacon.  i usually set one just under the surface, one on or close to the bottom and one about mid water.  just use a different sinker size for each.  avoid wire traces, i used to make a set of 4 gang hooks and only put the bait on the bottom 3 of them - very rarely lost a fish using this method and still got plenty of bites.  usually 30lb fluro leader and 15-20lb main line will suffice.  pilchard cube burley definitely helps if the bites are slow.

Another option is to use slugs - certainly effective but can result in a lot of bite offs which gets expensive and annoying.  not to mention this is a much more active method of fishing and i usually got over it after a few beacons and took the easier way out.  try and land your slug as close as possible to the base of the pylon and crank like all hell.  you literally cannot wind too fast for a mackeral.  if you don't get a bite best to drop back down and repeat until you drift well away from the marker.  20g-40g slugs are the go, best if you can see the bait to match the hatch of course.  I like halco twisties as they have a bit more action and flash but they all will work, just make sure they have a decent treble on them.  I tend to avoid using plastics - they are super effective at getting the bites but you lose more than you land and again can become an expensive and frustrating day out.  Often the mackeral will snip your plastic on the drop and you won't even feel it happen.

bycatch - if there's bait around you will get tuna, bonito etc on any of the above methods.  if using livies you will get the occasional hook up on a kingie or cobia, sharks can be annoying at times though.

Other spots to try are in the shipping channel along bribie and around bray rock / the blinker off caloundra.  Plenty around on the shoals and reefs off currimundi as well at the moment.  Also out on any of the shallow reefs and coffee rock around cape moreton, if you find bait the fish won't be far.

    good luck!
